The Bay of Naples

The Bay of Naples in Italy holds a treasure trove of ancient beauty and luxury. Recently, an underwater survey of the submerged Bahia Archaeological Park uncovered an extraordinary section of marble inlay flooring at the Baths of Locus.

The importedpartisana marble from Greece was used to create beautiful inlay flooring adorned with alternating colors, showcasing the typical decoration of the late Antiquity period.

The Baths of Locus were built inside Adamus, which featured a stone Colonnade with collapsed columns measuring over 260 feet long. These beautiful Villas were the homes of the Roman Elite, including Emperors between the first and third centuries.

Due to the coastline's gradual uplift, the Villas were in constant danger of being submerged until they were finally lost beneath the waves.

Today the submarinee Park of Bahia protects this invaluable archaeological site.

To preserve the Park's environmental and archaeological Heritage, activities such as interference with the remains, underwater fishing, pollution, and even swimming in certain areas is prohibited.

Pompeii

Pompeii is one of the most well-known archaeological sites in the world. However, it is often viewed as a single cohesive site, ignoring all the smaller discoveries that have been made there.

One such discovery is the House of the Vetti. Like everything else in Pompeii, it was frozen in time when the volcano erupted in 79 AD.

The Damas is named after the two men who lived in it, Alice Verius Conviva, who became a priest after being freed from slavery, and Always Vedius Restituted Us, who was also a Freed Man.

Almost all of the beautiful frescoes in the House of the Vetti are fully preserved and are considered the best-surviving examples of what historians call the Pompeian Fourth Style.

Twelve different mythological scenes are painted across its walls, including the punishment of Ixion and Dionysus discovering Ariadne. The names of the owners of the House of the Vetti were found on a pair of bronze seals inside the front hall of the Damas, and the relationship between the two men, who shared the experience of slavery, is unknown.

The House of the Small Fountain

The House of the Small Fountain is another well-preserved relic of Roman life frozen in time by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. It is also known as the House of the Second Fountain or House of the Landscapes. This residence is located on the Via de Mercurio, named after a nearby public fountain featuring a relief of the god Mercury.

The house is named after a mosaic fountain decorated with shells situated at the back of its peristyle. A larger, more ornate mosaic fountain adorned with shells and marble sculptures that have theatrical masks can be found in the nearby House of the Large Fountain.

Other impressive structures surrounding the House of the Small Fountain include the lavishly decorated Fallonica and House of L Horatius Hapsayasis, the House of the Five Skeletons with scenes from The Iliad, the House of Pompanius with remains of an oil press, and the multi-level House of the Anchor with its expansive Lower Garden.

Shops in Thermopolis can also be found in the area with attached residences that suggest a diverse workforce that included women and children.
