Mass Hysteria or Something Sinister?

The Disturbing Outbreak of Unexplained Possessions in Peru.

By Areeba UmairPublished about a month ago 3 min read

The story I’m about to share with you is truly bizarre and, so far, completely baffling. It involves what’s being described as an outbreak of something like demonic possession in the city of Terapó in northern Peru.

At the Elsa Perea Flores school, almost 100 children, aged 11 to 14, have been suffering from some seriously frightening episodes. We’re talking about seizures, convulsions, hysterical screaming, foaming at the mouth, and fainting.

What makes this truly unsettling is that medical professionals have absolutely no clue what is causing it.

The Doctors are Stumped

One local doctor, Anthony Troy, told the national channel Panamericana TV that they simply don’t understand how this has been allowed to keep happening. While it’s not clear exactly when this started, he confirmed that nearly 80 pupils were still affected at the time of the report.

A mother, De Peno, whose daughter was impacted, shared her distress with local media. She recounted that her daughter fainted at school and, despite going to the hospital, the doctors couldn’t give an explanation. The fact that her daughter continued “spitting froth from her mouth” only adds to the creep factor.

The Locals Have Their Own Theory

Naturally, locals are pointing to the supernatural, believing this is a case of demonic possession. A common theory is that the strange events were triggered by kids playing with Ouija boards.

Before you dismiss this as just local superstition, consider this additional detail: local reports suggest the school was built on top of a mafia graveyard where bodies and bones were supposedly buried.

Okay, I know, a story about a building on a weird spot isn’t solid proof. But let’s look at the students’ own accounts.

The Children’s Disturbing Descriptions

When the local media spoke to students who had experienced these episodes, their stories became chillingly similar.

One student, who wished to remain unnamed, described her experience:

“It’s disturbing for me to think about it. It’s as if someone kept on chasing me from behind. It was a tall man, all dressed in black with a big beard, and it felt like he was trying to strangle me. My friends say I was screaming desperately, but I don’t remember much.”

Another schoolgirl echoed this, saying she felt like someone was strangling her. A 13-year-old student provided an even more disturbing detail, noting that several children from different classrooms fainted at the exact same time. He personally recalled: “I got nauseous and started vomiting. I heard voices. A man in black chased me and wanted to touch me.”

The Nightmare Cherry on Top

It’s creepy enough that doctors have no idea what is happening, but there’s a whole other layer to this mystery.

Around ten days before these Peruvian episodes began, halfway across the world in Malaysia, a similar incident occurred. At the SKM Paloh Pintu school, about 100 students and teachers claimed to have seen a mysterious black figure lurking around the premises.

Teachers and students reported feeling a dark, supernatural presence. One teacher even said she felt a dark figure trying to enter her body. This situation became so extreme that the school was actually forced to shut down entirely.

The ‘Hatman’ Connection?

Honestly, I don’t often talk about demons because, frankly, they scare me! But the descriptions here make me think of what many people refer to as the Hatman, a reported evil or demonic entity that many people swear is real.

I personally believe that evil spirits exist; if there is good in the world, there must be evil, right? It’s the whole Yin and Yang idea. This is why you won’t catch me messing with Ouija boards or spending the night in any so-called haunted locations.
