Welcome to true or false, random facts edition!
I'm sure you already know how the game works so I'm not going to explain the rules. To spice things up, were going to turn this into a competition. There are 12 random facts that are either true or false, each true or false scenario you answer correctly will earn you a point. In order to be a winner of the game you must score 13 out of 13. Not eleven or twelve, thirteen. Sounds easy? Will see about that.
I will be putting your knowledge to the test to see how well-oriented you mind really is. Whoever wins this contest will receive a $5,000 Amazon gift card courtesy of me.
So are you ready?
Let's begin!
Fact 1
True or False: Andromeda is inside the Milky Way.
False
I'm assuming some of you don't even know what Andromeda is. Andromeda is another galaxy that's close to the Milky Way and is estimated to contain at least one trillion stars, which is roughly twice as more to the milky way according to the Royal Astronomical Society. It's also one of the brightest astronomical subjects that can be seen from earth with the naked eye on moonless nights and from places with low air pollution.
So the Andromeda galaxy is definitely not in the milky way, but it is predicted to collide with our galaxy in the next 4.5 billion years. Andromeda is 2.5 million light years away and it's getting closer to the Milky Way every minute at a speed of 70 mph. Don't know where I would be in 4 billion years but I know I won't be in the midst of all of this.
Fact 2
True or false: Sugar only acts as sweetener in baking.
False
I learnt this fact in culinary school eight months ago and realised that sugar does not only act as a sweetener in baking. There are so many properties of sugar that can help with making your delicious cookies or cakes at home. But one of those factors that I think home bakers should understand is that sugar keeps your bake goods soft and tender.
There's a natural bond between sugar and water from other ingredients such as milk and the albumen of eggs. This bond stabilizes moisture so your cakes, muffins and blondies won't dry out too quickly whilst baking in the oven.
Sugar also intersperses through structure of gluten molecules during the baking process as some water content within the starch (gluten molecules) is taken away by the sugar so your baked goods are not dry and tough. This is because the structure of gluten molecules are bonded together with water, so more gluten molecules a cake or brownie contains then the more tough they will be. This is why it's important to have the right balance of sugar when it comes to baking.
Too much Sugar - Baked goods will be very soft and tender to the point where it loses shape.
Very little Sugar - Baked goods will have its shape but will be very tough and hard.
Fact 3
True or False: Ghana is the biggest gold producer in the world.
False
This may be a shock to people as many of us thought African countries holds the most gold in the world. However, Ghana is the top gold mining country in Africa as it's the largest producer of gold with 142.4 tonnes buried in the ghanaian land as of 2019. However, that's nothing in comparison to China with 382.2 tonnes of gold underneath the grounds making China the largest gold producer in the world.
But don't be fooled! The continent of Africa holds some of the best natural resources in the world such as pure silver and diamonds that is protected by african governments from foreign miners.
Fact 4
True or false: The US Government acknowledges that Area 51 is a military base.
True
Official Documents from the CIA revealed Area 51 is an active military base used for flight training in the Nevada desert. They also confirmed the U-2 plane used to spy on the Soviet Union during the cold war in 1955 is still flown today by the US air force. In fact our forever president Barack Obama has been the only president in history to acknowledge the existence of area 51 publicly.
But were still raising eyebrows. Millions of people are still skeptical about sightings of aliens and UFO's, whereas I'm wondering how does one become employed at Area 51?
Fact 5
True or False: Steve Jobs is the founder of Apple.
False
Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne were the founders of Apple. Haha I caught you out! I always correct people when they think Steve Jobs was the only founder of the Tech company.
Apple was founded back in 1976 as a business partnership amongst the three. The first product of Apple was the Apple I computer, designed by Wozniak from scratch without having the basics features such as a keyboard and monitor. However, it was Jobs that decided to go ahead with the funding for the creation as he sold his Volkswagen Type 2 vehicle for a couple hundred of dollars whilst Wozniak sold his HP- 65 calculator which was worth $500 at the time.
I hoped that little paragraph encourages you to sell your most precious valuables in order to fund your multi-billion dollar company in the future.
Fact 6
True or false: I speak seven different languages.
False
I did say this game was a random fact edition, so don't be surprised if I slide in another fact based upon myself.
I do not speak seven different languages but I do speak two. English and Shona. Shona is the most common language spoken in Zimbabwe where my dad is from and it's taken seven years to finally be able to speak the language fluently.
Fact 7
True or False: Climbing is a being introduced as a new sport to the Olympics in Tokyo this year.
True
I found this out last week on the Japanese NHK news channel.
Climbing has become very popular over the last two decades so the Olympic committee thought it was fair for the sport to make its debut in this year's Tokyo Olympics. There will be three different types of climbing that we will see unfold in the games:
Lead Climbing - The aim is to climb as high as possible in six minutes. It's not about speed, it's about the distance climbed.
Speed Climbing - Goal is to see how quickly climbers accelerate up a fifteen meter wall. So it's a more a less a race.
Bouldering Climbing - Climbers must overcome as many problems as they can whilst climbing with a few attempts as possible. I'm assuming the Olympics will imitate a cliff or a rock formation on the climbing wall.
Fact 8
True or false: Yellowstone is expected to erupt in the next 200,00 years.
False
The Yellowstone Caldera is a supervolcano in the Yellowstone National park in Wyoming, United States. Yellowstone has had three super volcanic eruptions in the past 2 millions years and scientist have no idea when the next one will happen.
If yellowstone erupts tomorrow (it won't) it will effect all fifty states of the US, and will cause weather changes in other parts of the world. Yes, the supervolcano will be deadly when it erupts as the airborne ash particles formed by the magma and huge boulders of molten rock will shoot out of the volcano and spread to countries across North America. Temperatures are also predicted to drop below -10 in Europe, North Africa and parts of South America due to the sulfur dioxide being emitted from the volcano.
Scientist have no idea when the next eruption will be, but there confident to know that there will be clear warning signs of when Yellowstone is about to erupt.
Fact 9
True or False: Benjamin Banneker had an interest in watches and clock making.
True
Who is Benjamin Banneker?
He was a self-taught black astronomer, inventor and writer in the 1700's. He was born in Baltimore County Maryland as a free man, but was a descendant of enslaved ancestors. As many black people were enslaved across the US and Europe during the colonial period, Banneker didn't allow the climate of subjugation and austerity amongst black people to stop him from pursuing his education of Mathematics and astronomy.
“The color of the skin is in no way connected with strength of the mind or intellectual powers.”
Benjamin Banneker
During his career as an established scientist and surveyor, Banneker developed an interest in clock making and completed one of the first constructions of a wooden clock in 1753. Theories has surfaced in today's society that he was the actual designer of London's Big Ben due to his occupation and the name "Big Ben" being named after Benjamin. This is very hard not to believe.
Fact 10
True or false: There are three books of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy.
False
Just because Fifty Shades Of Grey is a trilogy film series doesn't mean there are three books of the novel. There are five books of the novel collection written by E. L. James with the first being published in 2011 and the last being published in 2017.
E. L. James was surprised when the first book of the novel series became a huge success around the world as it became one of the fastest-selling books with a paperback of all time in many countries. James also made it to Forbes in 2013, making it to the top spot of the highest earning authors all thanks to the success of the first book. Who knew millions of people would be so willing to read there wildest fantasies of Erotic romance.
Fact 11
True or False: Queenstown, New Zealand is the most southerly in the world.
False
It's Puerto Williams, Chile! For many years Ushuaia in Argentina which is 47 km away from Puerto Williams was the southerly city in the world. However as of 2019, Puerto Williams was given the title as chilean authorities decide to name Puerto Williams as a city rather than just a settlement. This has spiked concerned for the people of Puerto Williams as the new title may see an increase in unwanted tourism as foreigners may damage the culture and traditions the community holds.
Fact 12
True or False: Horse milk is known to detoxify the body.
True
Horse milk is mainly consumed in Kazakhstan in Central Asia and is also sold as powdered milk in countries across Europe. It's known to give you many health benefits for treating diseases, reducing your blood pressure and heal symptoms of eczema. Research by scientist has also proven that it can stimulate the effect on the liver which can help your body to eliminate toxins.
As we all know in some cases, nutritional foods and drinks that are really good for our health do not work well with our taste buds. Many people within western parts of the world has described the taste of horse milk to be very sour and bitter with a fishy smell.
Why can't all good things for our bodies taste nice?
Fact 13
True or False: The ring tail lemur is known as 'Maky' in Malagasy.
True
Malagasy is the native language of Madagascar and a ring tail lemur is translated to 'lemur rambony peratra', but the natives of Madagascar call them 'Maky'. The Ring tailed lemur inhabits from southern regions of Madagascar where you will find large groups of them gathered together during the daylight hours. This indeed is very daunting as I've seen for myself thirty pairs of lemur eyes just staring in the distance not knowing what type of behaviour there going to strike upon.
