The highly anticipated clash between the two enemies never happened. Tournament organizers called off both encounters between the teams that were scheduled for matches at the World Championship of Legends 2025 tournament in Birmingham.

Reasons Why the Match was postponed

Legends from the Indian side did not want to compete after the terror strike in Pahalgam which claimed a number of lives. The side made this decision both times during the tournament. First, during the league step in July, and second during the semi final round.

Big names took a stand:

Yuvraj Singh (team captain)

Shikhar Dhawan

Suresh Raina

Harbhajan Singh

Irfan Pathan

Yusuf Pathan

All these former international cricketers refused to step on the field for both fixtures.

League Stage Cancellation Details

The initial match was scheduled for July 20, 2025, at Edgbaston, located in Birmingham Cricket Ground. Tournament officials had set this fixture with the ambition of boasting some "positive moments" for the fans to cherish, much like the recent volleyball friendly between the two nations.

However, in public statements, some cricketers declared they would not be participating. Organizers then swiftly cancelled the match, and issued an apology to the cricketers for causing them discomfort, and for letting the fans down.

All those holding tickets were refunded in full by Edgbaston stadium.

Semi-Final Canceled as Well

After the league stage contests concluded, teams proceeded to the knockout stages. Pakistan Champions topped the group table with 4 wins from 5 league contests under the captaincy of Mohammad Hafeez.

India scraped into the semi-final by finishing 4th in the group stage and securing a place after beating West Indies Champions when the chase was completed in 13.2 overs.

The semi-final between these two sides was scheduled for July 31, 2025, at Edgbaston. But once again, the Indian legends held firm to their earlier decision.

Tournament Organizers' Response

WCL authorities made a public announcement regarding the issue. They mentioned that they were on the same page with the Indian team's decision to pull out of the tournament and they also respected the fact that Pakistan was prepared to fight for the victory.

Ultimately, they informed that the Pakistan Champions would proceed straight to the final match without the necessity of participating a semi-final.

What Cricketers Have to Say?

One sportsman whose identity was not revealed from the Indian side was very forthright in stating their viewpoint. The athlete pointed out that it is the country that comes first and then everything else.

The squad said they put in a great deal of effort to win the right to represent their nation and they would never let their country down regardless of the situation.

Pakistan's Journey to the Final

With the semi-final walkover, Pakistan Champions advanced straight to the title match. They faced either South Africa Champions or Australia Champions in the final.

The final took place on August 2, 2025, at Edgbaston. South Africa Champions defeated Pakistan Champions convincingly by nine wickets. AB de Villiers smashed an unbeaten 120 off just 60 balls while JP Duminy remained not out on 50.

Tournament Context

The World Championship of Legends is an event that pits cricket legends, who have already hung up their bats, from various countries to battle in T20 format matches. The 2025 version included the teams of Australia, South Africa, England, the West Indies, and other countries as the representatives.

Khelofun had the whole tournament under its wing and provided updates for the fans about the great athletes coming back to the field. The fans were not able to watch the rivalry but the tournament still brought forth the legend's unforgettable performances.

The Bigger Picture

This has not been the first instance when the sporting events between these countries had complications. The organizers were dreaming that this tournament would be different and the legends would make happy memories through their friendly competition.

The suspended contests are evidence that, at times, real-life incidents do have an impact on even the exhibition events with the retired legends. The league stage and the semi-finals have had no action at all as not a single ball was bowled.
