Ok! Firstly, brace yourself as I am about to blow your mind with things that we talk about everyday. Most probably are in our day to day vocabulary. Can you believe me when I tell you that there is no such thing as a baby carrot? The small carrots sold in supermarkets are regular carrots that have been shaved down to a smaller size. I know this makes no sense at all since we all know strawberries are red in colour but truth is that strawberry flavoured gummy bears are usually green, not red or pink. The people in agriculture obviously know this, in fact if you know a this or two about the farming of rice you might know that, brown rice and white rice are the same product, but white rice has had some parts removed through milling to give it its white colour. This for me was mind blowing. The Great Wall of China was built using sticky rice soup mixed with lime to create a stronger mortar. Chocolate lovers here is a fun fact for you. A dusty film found on old chocolate is caused by the cocoa butter separating from the rest of the bar due to heat, but the chocolate is still safe to eat.
I love avocados and I own an avocado tree so this is something I know, avocados can not ripen while still on the tree. I am sure that most of us have notices this. Tomatoes bought at supermarkets often have a weak flavour because they are stored at too cold of a temperature. The next time you think of throwing honey you might believe to be old please think of this fun fact. Honey can last for millennia without spoiling if properly sealed. Here is another one for the chocolate lovers, white chocolate does not contain cocoa powder and is made with cocoa butter, sugar, and flavourings. This following fact kept my head rolling for a while and mostly because it is confusing, plus it is what most of us know these two products to be. Well, did you know that peanuts and cashews are not nuts, but rather legumes and seeds, respectively.
Who does not love sushi? Well, have you ever questioned yourself about what goes into making this delicious roll? Well, sushi rolls with crab meat are usually made with imitation crab, which is made from fish paste. If you ever get to cook you will know that we have tried every trick written out there to prevent ourselves from crying. Here is what you can do next time you chop onions. Freezing, washing in cool water, or placing a wet paper towel near the cutting board can prevent tearing up while cutting onions. Most wasabi consumed is actually a mixture of horseradish, mustard, and green food colouring. Pineapple contains an enzyme that can cause a burning sensation in the mouth.
Fun fact, did you know that Mac and cheese used to be a luxury dish, while oysters and lobsters were once considered food for the poor. Did you know that salmon can be farmed? I didn't but I recently learnt that farmed salmon is dyed to have the same pink-orange colour as wild salmon. We all use petroleum jelly in some way, most of us use it on our day to day products, but here is what you might not know. The inventor of petroleum jelly, Sir Robert Cheesebro, believed in its miraculous properties and even ate a spoonful every day. It is pretty well known that oranges the fruit gave their name to the colour orange in Old English.
