Islam Basics: New Series!
Debunking some misconceptions, sharing information about Islam, and answering your questions!

Welcome to the new series Islam Basics!
If you have ever been curious about Islam or Muslims, or feel that you do not know much about it, this is the series for you!
This is a rebranding of my old series "Islam Info Sessions." You might note that the two posts that I had for that series (the intro and the first session) have been removed. I have started this rebrand for three reasons:
- I want to make it as accessible (easy to search) as possible
- I realized the first session I made for the series was fairly controversial, and although the topics were still important, I want to represent Islam in the best most accurate way possible while maintaining a safe space.
- It has been a while since I posted on this at all, so a little reboot/restart was needed (for my sanity). Plus, a little reminder that this series exists doesn't hurt!
For those who were paying attention to that series, this one is basically the same thing! However, I will be more focused on making posts about the basics of Islam. This means that I might respond to more general questions with a whole post, but more specific questions will be answered in the comments.
DISCLAIMER: This series is for educational purposes only. By no means is this series meant to convince others to join Islam, nor is it meant to be coercive. Its sole purpose is to spread awareness and debunk common misconceptions about the religion at a time in which Islamophobia is ever-increasing.
Q&A Feature: These posts are also meant to be a Q&A. On any post, readers are welcomed to comment any question they have about Islam or Muslims (does not need to be on the specific topic of the post) and I will reply with an answer as early as possible.
Also, please note that I am not an Islamic scholar. I am a convert Muslim who researched Islam for about a year before converting. I have also taken some courses on Islam and the Quran. I follow the schools of thought of the majority of Muslims.
Links! All of the posts that have been made for this series will be posted below! You can bookmark this post and use it as a Table of Contents guide!
All of the posts that I create will be accompanied by CITED SOURCES, so that you can see where the research for yourself! (In other words, this is not a "trust me bro" series!)
Some examples of topics that I hope to cover in the near future:
- Hijab (what it is, why women wear it, when it is worn)
- Islam as an Abrahamic religion (and what that means in relation to Judaism and Christianity)
- The Prophets in Islam (who they are, what they did)
- The Quran (what it is, how it came to be, what its message is, commonly misinterpreted verses)
- Hadith (what it is)
- Women in Islam (addressing misconceptions about sexism)
- Prayer (what it is, why it is done, how it is done)
- Arabic (why it is so significant to Muslims)
- Islamic holidays (Ramadan, Eid)
- The concept of halal (permissible) versus haram (impermissible)
- Mecca and the Kabbah (what it is, why it is so significant)
- Halal diet (what foods Muslims eat/not eat and why)
A couple of notes:
It is important to note that, as mentioned before, I follow the school of thought of the majority of Muslims, but not all Muslims interpret the Quran and hadith (both are guiding 'documents') the same way. This means that there is some differentiation among Muslims, but what I will be writing about are the most common interpretations/beliefs.
It is also important to note that this is meant to be a welcoming and safe space, for myself and readers. I welcome all questions as long as they are asked with good intentions. (Just because something is controversial does not necessarily mean it is offensive.)
With that being said, I hope to have fun with this, and look forward to seeing any comments you may have!

Great article - I think knowledge and awareness leads to understanding. Look forward to reading your follow up work.
Hey Belle—awesome to see you back at it! I have only one simpler (or maybe not!) question this time around; through your journey with finding Islam, how do you communicate with God? What do you find strengthens and maintains your faith?
this is awesome, thank you so much!
