International Mother Language Day 2022 Theme

The theme for this year’s event is “Using technology for multilingual learning: Challenges and Opportunities” The United Nations Scientific, Educational, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will discuss the potential role of technology in advancing education in various languages and supporting the development of quality teaching and learning for all.

What Does UNESCO Have to Say About Linguistic Education?

According to UNESCO, 40% of the world’s population lacks access to an education in a language they speak or understand. According to UNESCO, there are currently 7,000 different languages spoken throughout the world. UNESCO believes that cultural and linguistic diversity is essential for sustainable societies. It is part of its peace mandate to work to preserve the cultural and linguistic differences that foster tolerance and respect for others.

Message From the Director-General

International Mother Language Day 2022: Events and Celebrations

UNESCO will host a webinar on Mother Language Day 2022, February 21 from 11:00 in the morning to 1:00 in the afternoon, Paris time.

On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, is organizing a two-day event at the Indira Gandhi National Center of Arts, New Delhi, as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

Bangladesh initiated the International Mother Language Day, which was approved at the 1999 UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) General Conference and has been observed annually since. In the year 2000, the world celebrated the first International Mother Language Day.
