Exploring the Flip App

Jade makes money vol. 1

By Jade M.Published 8 months ago 3 min read

I heard about the Flip while scrolling through beauty posts on TikTok. Flip marketed itself as an app where you could earn money while watching product reviews. I decided to join because I was already watching product reviews and could always use the extra cash.

I also thought I could earn some extra cash by reviewing beauty products I already owned, but I quickly learned that you had to purchase the products directly from the app to review them. I deleted the app shortly after that, but I downloaded it again when TikTok was about to be banned.

I watched videos, noticing how many were devoted to making content or discussing earnings. The videos ranged from those making thousands of dollars from the app to those making mere hundreds.

The videos made it look easy. I already worked with beauty products. I wasn’t sure I wanted to create content, as I had tried it once before when an ex wanted to make a YouTube channel. I’m not as cute as I was back then, and I wasn’t sure how I felt about being in front of a camera again, especially after my weight gain. I ultimately decided to give it a try.

When I joined Flip, content creation was locked behind a ‘paywall’. You had to purchase to create videos, so I bought two items from Pley Beauty, a Cobra Kai lip balm and an eyeliner. The cost of the two items was $7.19. I told myself that it was a low price to ‘start a business’, and that I would earn my money back through sales.

Spoiler alert: I still haven’t made a single sale. One person added the eyeliner to their shopping cart, but that’s as far as I’ve gotten. I went on to buy eight more items (with my earnings from views). Two of the items were ‘on the house’ products. That means I got the items for free with the expectation that I would review them.

The lack of sales isn’t for lack of trying. I picked items that I thought I would use. Items that I thought I’d be able to sell. I didn’t choose items based on whether or not I thought they would go viral, but maybe I should have.

The other way to earn money on Flip is through making and posting clips. Clips are similar to the content on TikTok. The clips are where I’ve garnered most of my earnings.

The items that I purchased did not garner high views either. Most of them earned .20 to .30 cents. My other content wasn’t getting many views, so I joined engagement groups to get more eyes on my clips. The views helped but they also brought another issue to the forefront for me to deal with.

My content had room for improvement. I needed to spend more time creating and editing, but I didn’t have the time to. I work full-time, so Flip was put on the back burner in favor of work. Popular creators on Flip said it was best to make five videos a day, but I was lucky to make three a day. I also didn’t have time to edit most of them or even put on makeup before making a quick video.

Another issue that I came across was my lighting. My lighting was horrible in most of my videos, which led people who may have wanted to watch them to scroll by. Luckily, Flip allows users to make a ‘desire’ list, which is a wishlist of things they’d like to receive as gifts, or in my case, a list of things I’d like to buy myself if I ever earn enough. A kind person purchased a ring light from my desire list, which will help me improve my content.

So in the end, how much money did I make? My lifetime earnings equal $97.43, but I made purchases worth $76.97. This means that I have only made $20.46 from Flip. This puts me on the low end of content creators on Flip.

While I haven’t made much money, I hope that once I make changes my content will grow. I plan to keep posting clips and flips on Flip. I will update and share my experience with refreshed content. If you’re interested in checking me out on Flip, you can click the link.
