DRAWING NEAR TO GOD
A Path of Sinners to Find Redemption

Introduction:
Drawing near to God is a spiritual journey that requires sincere effort and a desire to seek His presence. As sinners, we often feel distant from God, overwhelmed by guilt and a sense of unworthiness. However, the Bible reassures us that if we take the initiative to draw near to Him, He will reciprocate by drawing near to us. This article delves into the biblical perspective on drawing near to God, addressing common concerns such as not knowing where He is, feeling unworthy, and understanding the timing for this divine encounter. By examining relevant biblical passages, we can gain a deeper understanding of the process of drawing near to God and how it can transform our lives.
I. The Invitation to Draw Near
The Bible repeatedly invites us to draw near to God, emphasizing that He is approachable and desires a relationship with us. In James 4:8, it says, "Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you." This invitation acknowledges that the initiative must come from us, but it also assures us of God's willingness to respond to our sincere efforts.
II. God's Omnipresence and Seeking His Presence
While we may not know where God is physically located, the Bible teaches that God is omnipresent, meaning He is present everywhere at all times. Psalm 139:7-10 beautifully describes this truth, stating that there is no place we can go where God is not already present. Therefore, drawing near to God is not about finding a specific physical location but about seeking His presence with a humble and repentant heart.
III. The Role of Sin and Repentance
As sinners, it is natural to feel unworthy of approaching a holy God. However, the good news is that drawing near to God is precisely the remedy for our sinfulness. In Isaiah 55:6, it says, "Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near." This verse encourages us to approach God in our sinful state, acknowledging our need for His forgiveness and grace. Jesus also assures us in Luke 5:32 that He came not for the righteous but for sinners, underscoring the importance of drawing near to God with a repentant heart.
IV. The Timing and Method of Drawing Near
While there is no specific schedule or appointed time for drawing near to God, consistent and intentional engagement with Him is essential. Developing a daily routine of prayer, reading the Bible, and worshiping God creates an environment for drawing near. Hebrews 10:22 advises us to "draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith." This verse suggests that drawing near is not just a one-time event but an ongoing process that deepens our faith and strengthens our relationship with God.
V. God's Response to Those Who Draw Near
When we take the first step towards drawing near to God, He responds by drawing near to us. In Jeremiah 29:13, God promises, "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." When we earnestly seek God, He meets us with open arms, ready to receive and transform us. The story of the prodigal son in Luke 15:11-32 beautifully illustrates God's loving and compassionate response to those who draw near to Him.
VI. Drawing Near through Prayer and Worship
Prayer and worship are integral components of drawing near to God. Through prayer, we communicate with Him, pouring out our hearts, seeking His guidance, and expressing our gratitude. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us to "not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." Prayer allows us to draw near to God, share our burdens and desires with Him, and experience His peace that surpasses all understanding.
Worship, on the other hand, is our response to God's greatness, love, and holiness. It is a way to draw near to God by focusing our hearts and minds on Him. Psalm 95:1-2 urges us, "Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!" Engaging in worship, whether through music, singing, or meditating on His Word, creates a sacred space where we can draw near to God and experience His presence.
VII. The Role of Scripture in Drawing Near
The Bible is God's written revelation to humanity, providing us with guidance, wisdom, and insights into His character. It is a powerful tool that helps us draw near to God. Hebrews 4:12 describes the Word of God as "living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword." By reading and studying the Scriptures, we encounter God's voice, His promises, and His teachings. It enables us to align our lives with His will and draw closer to Him.
Reading the Bible regularly allows us to understand God's heart, His commands, and His redemptive plan for humanity. It illuminates the path we should walk and reveals the nature of God's love and grace. Psalm 119:105 affirms, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." As we meditate on the Scriptures and allow them to penetrate our hearts, we draw nearer to God, growing in knowledge, wisdom, and intimacy with Him.
VIII. Drawing Near in Community
While drawing near to God is a personal journey, it is also meant to be experienced in the community. Fellow believers can encourage, challenge, and support one another in their pursuit of God. Hebrews 10:24-25 exhorts us, "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."
Participating in a local church or small group provides opportunities for corporate worship, prayer, and studying the Word together. It fosters an environment where believers can draw near to God collectively, sharing their experiences, testimonies, and spiritual growth. The accountability and fellowship found in the Christian community strengthen our faith and deepen our connection with God.

Conclusion :
Drawing near to God is a lifelong journey that requires intentionality, humility, and a willingness to seek Him. Through prayer, worship, engaging with Scripture, and participating in a supportive community, we can draw nearer to God and experience the transformative power of His presence in our lives. As sinners, we are invited to approach Him with repentant hearts, knowing that He eagerly awaits our response. May we embrace this invitation and embark on a journey of drawing near to the One who loves us unconditionally and desires to be intimately connected with us.
Drawing near to God is not contingent on our physical location or the depth of our sinfulness. It is a personal journey that begins with a sincere desire to seek God and a willingness to repent. Through prayer, reading the Bible, and worship, we create an environment conducive to drawing near. The Bible assures us that if we take the initiative, God will respond and draw near to us. This divine encounter has the power to transform our lives, bringing forgiveness, restoration, and a deepening relationship with our Creator.
