Death Row

The Last Hour

By Zeynep GözütokPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Let me explain the whole story behind it.

In the death row prison, time passes under a heavy silence, with everyone aware that in just one hour, a fellow inmate will face the end of their life. The echo of a guard’s footsteps increases the weight of the anticipated fate. This is the story of a man in his final moments.

The Final Moments

Inmates know that one of them will die within the next 60 minutes. They watch as a man stands at his cell, eyes closed, not begging for mercy but accepting his fate. With each passing minute, he reflects on the choices that brought him to this moment.

At 59 minutes to go, he sits on his bed, changing into a clean jumpsuit provided by the guards. It’s no different from what he wore, but it symbolizes a fresh start—albeit a temporary one. Just hours ago, he ate his last meal: a simple pizza and soda. Nothing extravagant, but it was what he wanted.

An Inner Journey

At 58 minutes, he approaches the cold metal bars, looking at the guards. “Thank you for treating me like a human,” he says. They nod, acknowledging his words without pity. In this moment, he feels a strange sense of camaraderie, even in the face of death.

As the minutes tick down, he finds an unexpected peace. Memories flood his mind—moments of joy and regret. What awaits him on the other side? He grapples with his past, aware that forgiveness seems elusive. Yet he clings to a flicker of hope for redemption, even beyond life.

Final Preparations

At 45 minutes, the warden and the chaplain arrive. They pray together, and the warden explains the procedure. The prisoner has rehearsed his final words, hoping to convey genuine remorse. He doesn’t ask for a second chance; he simply wants to acknowledge the pain he caused.

At the 30-minute mark, while the chaplain speaks of faith and hope, the prisoner contemplates his fate. He is aware that his life is no longer in his hands, and he turns inward, praying not just for himself but for those he has wronged.

The Last Moments

At 20 minutes, as preparations commence, the prisoner is escorted to the execution chamber. The finality of the situation looms as the doors buzz shut behind him. The witnesses—his mother, a lawyer, and a state representative—take their places in the viewing room. His mother clutches a tissue, torn between love and heartbreak.

At 10 minutes, the buzzer sounds, and he’s led into the execution room. He takes a moment to lock eyes with his mother, acknowledging her with a nod. He recites his final statement, expressing deep regret but not pleading for forgiveness. It’s a message of acceptance.

At 5 minutes, the executioner prepares the lethal injection. The chaplain offers a final prayer, squeezing the prisoner’s hand gently. “God will be waiting for you,” he whispers, stepping back to allow the procedure to unfold.

The Conclusion

At 1 minute, the cocktail of drugs enters his system. His vision blurs, breathing slows, and consciousness begins to fade. The EKG monitors show a flat line; he is gone.

This moment serves as a haunting reminder of the thin line between life and death. The final hour on death row isn’t just the end of one man’s life but a reflection on broader societal issues. Each story tells of pain, loss, and the yearning for redemption. In his last moments, the prisoner held on to what it means to be human, reminding us that even in darkness, there can be a spark of hope.
