Recently, there has been a significant amount of attention paid to Korean movies, particularly after the success of films like "Train to Busan" and the web series "Squid Game." These examples demonstrate the unique stories and exceptional filmmaking that Korean creators consistently produce. I recently watched "The Call" on Netflix and was not disappointed with the movie.
The basic premise of "The Call" is that a character receives a call from someone who lived in their house 20 years ago. Initially the woman from the past is not believing she is making call to future but the woman who lives on the present make her believe that she is calling to future. Slowly both become friends and the girl in the present understood that the girl in the past is being tortured by her step mother. She sympathise for the lady in the past and helped her to change her fortune and the "past girl" also helped the "present girl" to change his past. As a result of the changed destiny, " present girl" presence itself became a question mark. Quite confusing isn't it? But the movie narrates it neatly without confusing the audience. The movie is not very scary but there are suspense and chilling moments throughout the movie. I don't want to go into more details about the story as it will become spoilers.
Despite the seemingly simple storyline, the screenplay keeps the audience engaged by an unique concept. Though the characters are not physically travelling through time, but rather interacting across different time periods. Good enough line for a thriller and the writers of this movie used this plot very well to create an entertaining movie. They tried to create some emotional connection as well with the father and mother characters of the "present girl" but it didn't come out well. The two different timelines handled in the story are confusing sometimes. They could have used different colours for different timelines for better clarity. Also there is no explanation about the ability of that intercom phone to make calls to the future. In addition the girls showed no signs of fear for calling someone from another timeline. They handled it like just a usual thing which happens in regular life.
The music, cinematography and the plot are good.Screenplay is engaging but you might disappoint with the climax. Also worth mentioning the good acting from the " present girl" and the "past girl". The limited characters makes the movie more engaging.
Overall, I found "The Call" to be an enjoyable movie, however, there are some logical inconsistencies that left me feeling like the movie wasn't entirely polished. Additionally, as time-travel movies are quite popular and there are many similar storylines, some movie enthusiasts may find it to be an ordinary film and might feel this movie as a boring one in few scenes but for the people who don't watch movies frequently, this movie would be a decent watch.
If you're looking for something to watch on a weekend, I would recommend giving "The Call" a try. While it has some logical inconsistencies and may seem like an ordinary film for those who watch a lot of time-travel movies, I would rate it 3 out of 5. This movie also available in English.
Interesting scene( may contain spoilers)
The way the female lead character explains the advancements in technology over the last 20 years to the lady in the past is interesting. It makes me think how much progress has been made and how someone from the past, such as a person from 1950, would react to the current technology if given the opportunity.
