The Break In

Many Things Can Get Lost Amongst The Chaos

By Gabrielle S. AworiPublished 5 years ago Updated 5 years ago 8 min read

Five hundred years have passed since the Great Tyranny, and fifteen hundred since the pandemic. All country superpowers were weakened enough for The Uprising to succeed. Starting in the Americas, then spreading across the globe. We now have The Tyrants. The new world order council. The Four Section Leaders and the Great Tyrant. Section One, the Americas, Section Two, Africa, Section Three, Asia, and Section Four, Europe.

The grandson of the founder of the Whole. Armad Crawford|||. Apparently, he ordered his wife's murder. She was having an affair. He sends his daughter to boarding school in Second Half Section One, formerly South America. The other Tyrants only rule their Sections, whereas he rules the Whole.

You’re probably wondering about the Fifth Section. It’s gone. The majority of Section Five is submerged, and what's left is devoid of life. Only the Tyrants know what happened to it, but that's best kept secret.

I put everything in my bag. 2000-volt Blinder, which blinds anyone within 300 feet. An LM-25. The strongest gun available. It fires 200 bullets after reloading. A hand-sized robot, Mal. He can hack into computers of any type and has multiple defenses in place. By using a small bracelet, it can sense any threats and fire automatically if it’s dangerous, only needing confirmation from the owner.

“Hurry up, Dominique. We’re breaking into the Capital, not a hotel,” Sam said, standing in the worn-down doorway of my room. The moonlight was shining on her blonde hair, and her pale blue eyes. I couldn’t see her entire face or her silhouette since she wore an all-black outfit and black mask.

“I’m moving as fast as I can, not all of us get by just using an old pistol they found on the street,” I retorted, glaring up at her through my lashes. I turned around and scanned my drawer for a BlackOut Bomb; it could shut down virtually all electronics within 1,000 feet.

“Whatever. If you’re not here in five minutes, we’re leaving without you,” she left before I could give a response.

I rolled my eyes and looked in the cracked mirror beside me. Light reflected off the silver ornaments on my face. Conner would probably ask me to take them off, but I decided to leave them on anyway. I looked myself up and down. My... odd hairstyle, a third of my curly black hair shaved, the bright blue tips showing in the darkness. A black leather jacket covered my matching crop top. Above my heeled boots, my black jeans are cuffed.

My thumb rubbed across the silver heart-shaped locket around my neck as I sighed. “I’ll do my best, Momma. You’re keeping me safe, right?" I murmured to myself. I sighed and hid the locket under my shirt. I grabbed my black duffel bag and left.

While walking down the staircase, I noticed everyone talking to one another.

Conner glanced at me, “I thought I told you the goal was to stay hidden,” he contorted.

“Yes, and?” I responded, placing a hand on my hip, daring him to continue.

"Nevermind," he sighed, and I joined the rest of the group. "Here's the plan," Conner explained, pulling out a map.

I was with Blake at the back entrance of the Capital. Only Mal's computer could be heard as he flew behind me.

“Remember the plan,” Blake whispered, “Wait until the guard watch rotates, then the door will be vulnerable.”

I nodded, and looked down at the built-in watch on my bracelet, “If my watch is set right, that should be in a few seconds”

A shrill beep sounded, and the guards moved forward. Blake and I moved the second they disappeared, having about 30 seconds.

Mal connected to the card reader and broke into the entrance system. Blake and I silently waited by the door. Five seconds passed, then ten, then fifteen. I looked at Blake with worry. What if Mal didn’t finish in time? Blake’s gray hooded eyes looked at me with comfort, and the door opened.

It took time for our eyes to adjust to the brighter light inside the Capitol.

“We should head in a bit more, just in case there's anyone a couple of feet out of range,” I offered, Blake nodded in response. His black hair had more contrast in the light. The all-white room rendered both of our outfits useless.

“Come on, we need to be fast or we’ll end up drawing attention to ourselves,” he said, grabbing my hand and pulling me along. His silver ring was cold to the touch on my hand.

It was empty in the hallways. It’s probably because everyone was at the Anniversary Gala. Today marks Section One's founding.

Once we were sure we were alone, I took the BlackOut out of my bag and gave Conner one last message.

“We’re going off the grid, you can start phase two,” I informed.

His voice was mixed with static as he said, "Okay, phase two is underway."

I looked up at Blake, now towering over me more than usual, and nodded. He nodded back and I activated the bomb. The room went dark, and Mal switched power sources to stay online.

“Let’s go, before they start checking the halls,” Blake said, and I got up, grabbed my bag, and headed to the East Wing

The Event Hall's doors were barricaded shut, and no one inside could access the outside world. Neither can anyone else in the building, including us. Sam, Remedy, and I were now headed towards the East Wing, where we would try to take out some of the guards to help Dominique and Blake.

I just hoped Dominique takes this seriously, she’s so stubborn. I don't know why she doesn’t listen to me, I’m just trying to protect her.

"Hey, bandana boy," Sam whispered, pulling me out of my thoughts. "Pay attention, the guards are coming."

When I reached for the gun in my trench coat, I quickly realized it was useless. However, that is also true for the upcoming enemy.

“If you’re thinking about Dominique, I’m sure she’s fine, Conner,” Remedy said, putting a hand on my forearm. I smiled down at her, and refocused on the mission

Guards sighted us and pulled out their guns before realizing their weapons weren't working. I smirked at their realization before charging, throwing a punch at the nearest guard, Remedy and Sam close behind me.

Blake and I waited a few halls down from the MainFrame room. Mindlessly, I drummed my fingers on the wall behind us. Why were they taking so long? There were only three minutes left before their guns turned back on, five before we had any sort of communication.

Blake put a hand on my shoulder and reassured me, "They'll be okay. Connor and the others know how to defend themselves," he said.

With panic in my dark brown eyes, I turned to him. Only his pale skin could be seen in the darkness. A black turtleneck and jeans were paired with black dress shoes. “I know that they can, but those guards have higher tech than we do. Besides, what if I calculated wrong, and the guns turn back on sooner than I thought?” I offered, “If any of them get hurt, it would be completely my fault.” Mal chirped behind me, sensing my stress.

Blake put both arms on my shoulders now, and looked me in the eyes, “Dominique, we both know you’ve never calculated wrong. Trust me, everything will be fine,” he assured me before pulling me in for a hug. I sighed and returned the hug.

We could hear a faint bird call seconds later. Turning to the noise, I stepped away from Blake. “He’s okay,” I whispered to myself.

“I told you he would be,” Blake said and headed down the hall.

“C’mon, we have three minutes before communication devices are activated.” Blake and I made it to the MainFrame entrance. The guns would activate in a minute.

Many people stopped, shocked, as we pushed the door open. There were no guards, so they had no defense.

I pulled my gun out of my bag and aimed it at everyone. “On the ground, and out of my way,” I demanded. That was all I needed to get everyone away from the computer.

The door buzzed shut, signaling that the power was coming on again, and communications would activate soon. “Blake, grab anything they can use to talk to people, I’m gonna get into the computer.”

Mal linked to the computer and began to break in, Blake had collected all phones, walkie-talkies, and any other type of communicator.

“Are you guys alright?” I heard a familiar voice ask in my ear.

“Yeah, we’re fine, almost done here, just a few more seconds…” I trailed off as Mal gave a small chirp saying he was finished. He just implanted an undiscoverable virus that would intercept all The Tyrants’ plans to deal with the small rebellions that sprung out around the world.

"Let's go," I said, and Blake nodded. When we left, the guards were already holding guns and ready to attack.

“So close…” I complained. Mal began to prepare his defense. Taking a pair of sunglasses from my bag, I handed one to Blake, who put them on silently.

Mal was then placed in my jacket before I put my sunglasses on.

“Put your hands up and drop the weapon!” one of the guards shouted.

"Chill out, I need a weapon to drop first." I rolled my eyes. Blake, cover me."

As Blake moved in front of me, I drew the Blinder. While the guards reloaded their guns, I moved in front of Blake and threw down a bomb, which caused a bright light and sound to fill the building. All the guards tried to grab the fallen guns.

Running through them, I laughed. Someone grabbed my collar, and I cried out. Blake stopped and turned back toward me, I pulled against the person's hand. I could hear a small snap after they let go.

After we got outside, the building was put under lockdown. We met Conner and the others in the back.

“Did everything go well?” Remedy asked, concern showing in her emerald eyes.

Blake spoke up, “Yeah we almost got caught, but Dominique saved us as usual,” he smiled placing a hand on my head.

I smiled at him and turned to Remedy, “Nothing a Blinder couldn’t fix, I reached for my throat, remembering the person who grabbed me. Then I felt dread rise in my stomach.

Mal chirped in response, preparing to attack. “Dominique, what’s wrong?” Conner asked. I patted the top of my shirt and searched my pockets.

"Mom's necklace..." I whispered when I couldn't find it.

“What?” Sam asked.

“I lost it! I lost Mom’s necklace!” I screamed in anguish.

Conner looked over my shoulder wide-eyed making sure no one heard me, then looked down at me, his brown eyes boring into mine, “Are you positive you didn’t leave it at home?” he asked.

“Connor, I never take it off. Why would I leave it at the house?!” I said, my breaths becoming more rapid. I shook my head, “I need to go back.” I turned back to the Capital.

“Are you crazy?” Connor grabbed my arm. “The building is on lockdown. You'll be killed!”

I'll take that risk!” I snapped, “That’s mom’s necklace, the only thing I have left of her! I don’t have the memories, or pictures, or anything, all I have is that necklace!”

Blake chimed in, "Dominique, Connor's right, this isn't worth it.". Maybe we can go back for it another time?” he volunteered.

I looked at the people before me. Even Remedy, who would usually agree with me, was looking hesitant. “Fine,” I said, looking at the ground in front of me, “We’ll go back for it later.”

Blake touched my shoulder and tried to reassure me, I shrugged him off. I'm getting my necklace.
