Technology is making us into sheep.
In the age of answers how do we think outside the box?
So many of us think we know the answers to everything but really we're not even thinking for ourselves anymore. All of our answers are from articles we read from the Internet or popular opinions that we read on social media. It's hard not to be bombarded by these ideas. This is basically how advertisement works. It's not your fault that you're thinking these things. Algorithms and data structures have been studying you carefully throughout the years.
Do you remember the days when you had a conversation with a friend and you'd just come up with questions and you two would just come up with wacky ideas. Yes these could have been possibilities to solutions we needed. Those were the days because we knew we were all full of it but it was fun creating ideas out of nowhere. I think that's lost nowadays. This idea of imagine and make believe.
Today conversations don't work this way anymore. We have a question and someone quickly looks up the answers off of google. Wouldn't it be awesome if we had... Nope. It's already been done, it's already been created. In today's age, we feel as though everything is finite. Everything has been done or someone has already thought of it. With around 7.8 billion people around the world I admit the likelihood of someone actually having the same thought is likely.
This mentality kind of kills our ambition to think outside the box. We have a defeated mentality in terms of new ideas. There are a number of people that will try to push through this mentality but the people around them will continue to pull them back down to reality. Not like they're pulling them down in a negative way, it's more like they see it as their reality so they want their friends to see the same thing as they do.
That's why it's really hard for someone to really get original and believe in their ideas. It doesn't help that technology will use algorithms to show us other things that we already believe in. We don't see other sides of the truth because Google, YouTube or some social media will only fill our newsfeeds with the same crap over and over again.
Having this much information in our hands is both powerful and detrimental. As humans we try to find the easiest way out of things and that's why we don't go searching for the answers we don't want to seek. It's up to us to work and find the right questions and look for different types of answers even if they don't match our own personal beliefs.
Those adversarial points of views are the opinions that will create dialogue and ideas. Being right all the time isn't necessarily conducive to your progression as a human being. We have to be proven wrong in order to come up with new ideas. It's normal to make mistakes. I think we're supposed to make them. I find that it's problematic that we don't even question some of the commonly accepted answers in life.
Some of the greatest minds have been persecuted for thinking outside the box. With social media that persecution is even worse than it is in the old days. We can become cancelled and ridiculed for the rest of our lives. Who wants to be wrong if the world will fight you for it. Now I'm starting to understand the 1984 quotation of 2 plus 2 is 5.
Today we live in such a crazy age that I truly believe it's possible that we start believing such errors in order not to be persecuted by the public. We're fed so much of the same news catered to our likes and wishes that sometimes we start believing it. There's only so much a person can take before they start to give up.
We don't live in some torture chamber though. It is still possible to think. It's just that it's way harder to be vocal about it when you know the repercussions for being wrong. You have to realize though that there are a lot of people that respect the bravery of coming forth with your ideas. Putting yourself out in the open world with contrary opinions to people is very brave. It's rarity makes you that more special.
So go out there and continue to think differently. Just try to express those opinions. Maybe start off small by talking to some open friends or if you feel it's necessary go out to the public and speak your mind. I for one will be one of the people listening to your opinion, regardless if I agree or not.
