'The World’s End' is Not the End of the World for Simon Pegg
The first years after college, getting the boys back together for homecoming was almost as seamless as lining up the next keg. But as the years progressed, bringing the past full circle fell victim to constraints such as family, work and sheer geography. That is until Steve started making threats as our 30 year anniversary loomed and permanent expulsions would be levied no matter the lame excuse. Simon Pegg knows the feeling and does his bit to recapture glory with atrophied friends in The World’s End. So let’s compare and contrast with this comedic sci-fi movie.

'Arrival' Gives Plenty to Ponder, but Possibly Misguides on Alien Purpose
A writer, I am poor. This means I get my Science Fiction Movies free from the library, and Arrival is only a three day loan. No time to watch it twice, this movie requires another viewing, and a two dollar a day fine would eat up all my profits. I also don’t feel like enduring three weeks on the waiting list to get the chance to contemplate its depth and give a full accounting. I don’t want you to wait either. So here it goes.

FRACKERS
One premise/motif of our feature film FRACKERS is that every being in the universe is a light being. As Einstein famously figured, "No energy is created or destroyed". We in turn came up with the idea that our light, the light that is us, is also eternal. This fun premise for a film does consider that even our eternal energy might change form, as light can be be both particles and waves, so can our energy break-down from waves into less desirable particles, not to be judgmental.

Iconic Sci-Fi Film Directors
The best sci-fi film directors are experts in visual storytelling. Regardless of how crazy and seemingly improbable it is to realize a sci-fi story onto the big screen, they will strive to make things work. From fearsome aliens and desolate planets to time-traveling shenanigans, these people know how to deliver the most imaginative thrills. While superhero films are currently dominating the box office, sci-fi has its fair share of monster hits. It’s about time that the top sci-fi film directors get the recognition they deserve.

A Clockwork Orange Can Teach Us Something About Partisan Politics In America
My first viewing of A Clockwork Orange 30 years ago left me lost on the message. A hardened criminal receives the opportunity for a quick, psychologically based reform, but the dehumanizing treatment endured almost makes his crimes seem forgivable. Not sure who to side with and put off by the chaotic presentation, I was indifferent. Nonetheless, a later more open-minded viewing got my nod, but the ideological mish-mash remained, and a meaningful critique here, would require the insight of others.

Nightmarish Monsters in Science Fiction (Inspired by Lovecraft)
Many consider HP Lovecraft to be one of the greatest horror writers, despite the fact that many people are only familiar with his works because someone posted a pic of Cthulhu on Reddit once. When Lovecraft wasn't writing letters brimming with overt racism, he wrote stories--many of which are easily among the greatest pieces of sci-fi horror of his time. Star Trek's Finest Federation Starships
The newest incarnation of Star Trek is, apparently, about to start filming anytime now. Called Star Trek: Discovery, little is known about the show. However, a teaser trailer from the San Diego Comic-Con last year showed footage of the new starship emerging from space dock and fans were understandably outraged. The angular abomination looked amateur and unworthy of being in the greatest sci-fi franchise of all time. Based on an unused Ralph McQuarrie concept for the USS Enterprise from the unmade movie Star Trek: Planet of the Titans, it almost appears to be a marriage of Starfleet and Klingon design. Fans flocked to comment online and the general consensus was that everyone hoped this was simply a first draft and the ship would be vastly improved before the new series aired.

Since the inception of the original show in the 1960s by Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek has become a fabric of sci-fi pop culture, with millions of devoted Trekkies. Many have tuned in to the TV shows and movies that have followed to follow the Enterprise and the crew’s missions in space, the final frontier, and go where no man has gone before. The characters are memorable, the moments are unforgettable, its diehard fans speak the language of Klingon, and the technology, for how it was made 50 years ago, was groundbreaking and extremely imaginative. Then, there are the starships like the Enterprise that are fast, large, and a world within a world that grabs the attention of viewers. Various starships like the Enterprise are seen in the Star Trek universe, and many of them give us a convincing look of what it would be like in open space.
