In the Shadows of My Heart
The sun birthed itself into the murky shroud of dawn. How many sunrises had I seen just like it since the cloud of doom mushroomed over us a year ago? Has it truly been a year yet? More? Or less? It's Monday I think. It hardly matters since each day is the same joyless passing of time as all the others.

The Arsonist
The girl hissed as the handcuffs binding her to the metal table dug further into her wrists. There's no way I'm getting these off, she thought, as she let her mangled bobby pin clatter to the floor. She threw her head back, squinting at fluorescent lights, and cursing her own stupidity. She considered the fact that maybe she shouldn't be too upset. Technically she was safer in here than out there, depending on how you define the word “safe.”

Locket of Love
The heart shaped locket in my hand glinted as the hazy rays of our dying sun shone upon it. After carefully excavating it from a pile of rubble, and brushing off the layer of caked-on dirt that encompassed it, I was able to admire its beauty. It felt solid and warm in my hand, with a weight to it, but not of physical size. The weight came from the memories it held. I closed my eyes and focused my abilities on the locket. A flood opened in my mind of emotions, feelings, and images of the previous washed through me, and into my very soul.

The arrangement
Samuel Santiago, please come to the E.R! It’s imperative that you come here . We have a severe case of that disease. We need you here! Santiago rushed into the E.R. He ran into the E.R. He was confused about the empty emergency room. Is this really true? or did he imagine the call from the intercom. Why is there no one here? It’s been a strange and almost terrifying day; because he's seen the world news. The atmosphere’s parts per million has reached a critical level.. He was scared, but he refused to let that news bring his spirits down. « The world is a strange place. It’s rapidly changing day by day, » Santiago mumbled. The night sky has been recently showing different night colors: Gray some days, brown sometimes, and even red once a week. There was an aurora borealis here in California, which was an extremely rare event, since we’re nowhere near the arctic, or the arctic circle.. Is this all connected to what the newscaster had said this morning? Santiago walked around the E.R., then he noticed with his peripheral vision Jackson a young R.N.. At theI.C.U. there appeared to be a huge commotion. « I wondered if he meant the I.C.U, and mixed up the names. » Santiago entered the I.C.U. He noticed that a patient was on the ground, and he was unconscious. « Jackson what’s going on? Why aren’t you doing anything at all? Are you scared? Do you know what to do? » Santiago asked calmly.

After the Tornado
Deep within a tainted castle, an innocent lass sat slumped upon bales of straw, contemplating her options. Papa’s dispensation of humiliation and her refusal to woo a despicable King had landed her upon this itchy bed. How horrible to be poor, without a dowry, without a mother to shut the Papa up. She twisted her heart-shaped locket, smearing black smudge back and forth, back and forth across her collarbone: a cheap token, but all her mother had left behind. What good was it to her, powerless as she was? She’d a mind to toss it out a window, had there been one cut into the greystone walls. Time didn’t exist within the confines of this whitewashed space.

The Growth
The Earth began to breathe again, and we weren’t supposed to breathe with her… August 03, 2025. The world seemed no difference than any other day. Sun rose in the sky. Winds rustled the trees, whistling through the branches. Salt in the air as the waves crashed onto the shore. My wife slept beside me and the radio muttered lowly in the distance.
