"Memories pass through like a calm gust of wind." "We can only embrace the experience, wondering where it goes after those fleeting seconds disappear."
Adam stops walking and stares at the words on the dull wall, and shift closer to admire the enchanting quote.
His eyes following every rugged curve and line. It took one step back for him to discover a small hole between the word "disappear."
"Mmm." Adam stood in his tracks, intrigued, and looks through the hole. A bright foreign light pierced his eye. Immediately he pulled back, holding his eyes shut, crying out, and stumbles. Intense pain grew in his right eye, followed by a migraine. Adam slid down the wall using his left hand as a guide. Tears gradually fell, hitting the ground. Adam buried his head between his legs, trying to rest against the pain. Hours slipped away, and wakes up, slowly opening his eyes. It was sundown; traffic could be heard from afar, his right eye was inflamed, with only twenty-two percent of vision remaining. Adam gathered the strength to get on his feet and went south initially from where the light was. At the end of the building, to the left, Adam saw a short alley leading to a dark mist surrounding an entrance, debating with his subconscious, and concluded that it was suggested for him to enter the unknown. He pauses for any signs of uncertainty, found none, and proceeded as he steps on towards the alley; his body aches, and he has an uneasy feeling. The ground moves forward. Adam's inches away from the mist; in a swift moment, his adrenaline rushes in, but to no avail, he couldn't catch his breath with the fog in his lungs. He chokes, gasping for air, falling on his knees while drifting through the doorway. He attempts to crawl back toward the open sidewalk. It's too late. Great energy throws him off; he catches his breath. It was eerie surrounding, not a presence of light around. He isolated himself from his thoughts. Adam heard a faint sound coming from behind. "Hello?" He hears nothing. Another fainted came in front of him. He feels an existence around him, trying to hold his composure. "Hello?" "Please, get help."
In the distance, he spots a dim light and crawls towards it. In the corner of his eye, he catches a distorted figure, quickly turned his head, and saw a skull. Without a second thought, he gets on his palms, picks himself up, and starts running on injured knees, limping to the light. Once he's there, he sees that the light is small, like a candle flame. The unknown moved toward him. The figure was lengthly, with hunched shoulders and covered by a black cloak. Its skin looked as if it were lifeless and cut a thousand times. Its eyes are dark and took up half of its face while it was levitating. The unknown said in a demanding tone, "State your purpose."
Adam replies, "I. I don't know."
"What is your name?" The figure asked
"Adam." What are you? Who are you?"
The figure answers.
"I am what you would refer to as an ancient being that roams numerous dimensions. I have existed for many millennia. Your species are not aware of us, yet we are a part of all. I come forth as something unusual and familiar to you." Adam doesn't speak. He looked up at it and had a glimpse of unearthly visions; he saw elements, beasts, surfaces outside of anything he's ever known.
The entity continues to speak. "You have possessed the awareness through me. Do not be alarmed. You are perishing in this second." Adam's anxiety grows.
"You are in between your world and another field plane." The entity touches the open air behind it, and a portal opens up.
"Come." Adam follows behind it and realizes he's in his apartment.
"Why are we here?" Adam asked, cowardly."
"I preferred you be comfortable in an environment." The entity replied.
Adam sits on his couch and sigh of relief.
"So, what was the light I saw? Why is all of this happening to me?" The figures answer through telepathy. "A book?" Adam replies out loud. He gets up to look around and spots the little black book on the edge of the tv stand.
"This book contains the knowledge of one of many universes. There is a specific way to read from this book; such vast information not attainable to the common eye. When you read from this book, it cast a protection over you and death." "Protection?" Adam replied questionably.
"Yes, from any other deities that wish to harm you. You possess a mystic book; it could cause fates worse than death in any world. Entities guard the text against any mortal for the purpose alone." The entity concluded. Adam's stunned. "How long do I have left?" Sounding concerned.
"You know the answer; your body is shutting down and grows weary every second." Adam asked, "Is it reversible?"
The entity speaks. "From this book, you can desire anything; it will manifest in your reality. Touch the book, and it exists."
Adam closes his eyes and touches them. Sparks flew from his fingers as he pulled away.
"What now?" Adam asked. The entity tugged the air in front of Adam, and everything vanished except for the couch. Darkness fell upon them, and then a speck of light appeared. The book levitates around it. "
Do you know what I desire?" Adam asked. He nervously burst out in laughter.
"Enough!" The figure said frustratingly.
The entity snaps its finger, and two openings appeared. One of the portals looked like a red wasteland. The other was too bright to see anything. The entity levitated to the wasteland as the book follow behind.
"I will see you again." As It goes through the opening, and the portal closes quickly. Adam looks at the remaining portal. The entrance of the portal's energy pulled him in. He blinks, finding himself on his couch. He looked up at the dark ceiling and noticed his shirt felt damp. Adam looked down and discovered a pool of blood underneath him; he is too weak to move. Adam lays in his blood, staring at the ceiling. Everything became translucent; he saw the stars through the roof. The stars seemed to be closer, brighter; he feels a warm gust of wind encircling his weightless body. There was nothing for him, no sight, no sound, only the perception to feel.
Birds are chirping; the sun is illuminating, and a cool breeze gently touches Adam. He opened his eyes, smelling a bit of iron. Adam gets up, aware of dried blood on his shirt, still cannot fathom what occurred.
There, an open door replacing the entry where the mist used to be. Adam enters; the building had pipes leaking from the ceiling, bare surfaces, and shattered glass all over. Adam wanted to dismiss the whole idea of exploring, yet, something is compelling him to go into another room. He did; he sees a pile of hundreds of hundred dollar bills in the corner of the room; stunned, amazed by what's there, he remembers what the entity told him. Adam manifested twenty thousand dollars by touching the book. He couldn't believe it. "This has to be a joke. Twenty thousand dollars. Twenty thousand!" Excitedly, Adam picked up a bill and examined it, knowing that it was authentic; he begins to count it. Adam grabbed as much as possible, putting them in his pockets, feeling good Adam dances on the way out. Adam exits the building and felt an eerie feeling he felt the previous night. Adam halted; the entity was in front of him in a shaded area. It was seven and feet tall, and it was daylight; there was no mistake about it.
The entity spoke, "The time has come." It reached toward Adam. He dodges its touch.
Adam pleads, "What do you want from me? I want to be left alone.
"I am afraid not." The deity replied and continued, "You have disrupted the spiritual energy by existing. There is no place for you." It pulls out a flaming double edge sword. To his left, another entity comes out of thin air with a single blade. The entity threw it at Adam and grazed him. Behind him, the same entity that he spoke with had protected with a force of the wind guarding him. Dark, heavy clouds surrounded the building, thunder pounding like a sledgehammer and lighting striking the area. Both deities attack the shield showing no mercy. The entity spoke with clarity to Adam, "I am not going to be able to hold them apart. You need to jump in one of their entrances. It will lead you to an alternative reality."
Adam shouts, "What will happen to me in this reality?"
"You will perish." It replied
Time ceased for him. The only thing he could remember was the quote that he saw; everything made sense. A fourth deity appeared in between the other two holding a thin, jagged sword. Adam took the risk and sprinted towards the portal. The double-edged sword slices his arm before he makes it. He turned to look at his arms gushing blood and noticed the single blade coming from above him. Adam jumps and rolls right just before the sword landed. With only meters away from the opening, he continues to sprint; the jagged blade landed on his left; Adam is struggling to move in time. The entity protecting him thrusts him into the portal. Adam instantly fell unconscious from its touch; soon after, a massive blast of energy propelled all deities to a great distance. The entity reaches its hand towards the portal, chanting in an alien tongue while it closes.
Adam opened his eyes, rubbing the back of his head; he looked at his arm, there a battle wound scar entirely healed. There he lay looking up gazing at the sky, purples oranges and pinks blend into each other as the sun illuminate the top of the trees in a distance, feeling that familiar gust of wend Adam moves just a bit to feel the money he grabbed is still stuffed in his pocket, He smiles watching the birds dance in the sunset.
