Okay... we've been along for the ride since the beginning. We were Luke Skywalker and Han Solo's geek group. But what the heck!? Somehow we've taken a left turn into an alternate reality. Let's look at a few things from the new movie that make NO SENSE! (In my humble opinion).
ONE:
The relationship between Han Solo and Ben Solo
I don't know about you but I always thought Han Solo would be an amazing Dad. He was fun, exciting, had that sarcastic sense of humor and was an all-out good guy. He loved Leia and we literally have no idea what happened to them. In the first and second movies, it seems like their relationship was strained. Why?? Han Solo dies in the first film and Leia is only a little sad?? This guy was supposed to be the love of her life! But for some reason, they have been split up for some time and Han Solo has been smuggling. I mean he's done it since he was a teen, but after that awesome adventure with Luke and Leia why would you go back to that? Anyway, aside from that not being answered, why does Ben hate his dad?? Why does Ben Solo even go to the dark side? Why does he feel like he's closer to Darth Vader than he is from his own mother and father?? Leia is supposedly supposed to have been in charge of the resistance during the first three films she was in. In this new series, she is still in charge of the resistance but they defeated the empire so why has she been in charge of it?? Did they fail? Has the empire been just causing disaster this whole time?? What happened to the Jedi? Why are there no Jedi left to help with this disaster? I mean, they didn't all die during the Clone Wars.
TWO
What the heck has Skywalker been doing this whole time??
You'd think that Luke Skywalker would be trying to train more Jedi to replenish the dwindling numbers. But NO! There are apparently ZERO Jedi that he's trained. I guess the ONE TIME he tried, Ben Solo killed them all. I'm still confused as to why that happened. Also Luke is supposedly so in tune with the force but he can't sense when his own student as gone dark?? Is this supposed to be an arc-like when Obi-Wan Kenobi sensed Anakin's darkness but didn't want to believe it?? I understand generational ties, but Darth Vader was bad, Luke Wasn't and now Ben is?? On top of that Ben isn't really even dark! (More on that in a sec) So Luke has apparently been training his whole entire life since the Empire Strikes Back, and now after Ben is born he decides that THEN is the time to teach some new kids?? And afterward he so ashamed of himself that he abandons all responsibility and leaves his sister and EVERYONE to fight the new republic alone. He isolates himself on an island no one else can find.
Second small note... why is R2D2 powered down? Did Luke program him to do that? No. Just one day R2D2 decided to just power down and not respond. It isn't until BB8 gets the other piece of the map that he wakes up. SO what... is there something in the map that lets R2D2 know that they might find Master Luke??
Three
Why did they make everything so dang easy for Rey?
The whole point of having a worthwhile character is to see them struggle. The first and second movies everything comes easy to Rey. It's only the third movie they show her struggle and its to CONNECT! Not to lift stones, or use the saber, just to connect with all the Jedi before her. Does that happen to every Jedi?? Cuz I never heard anything like that in the first three movies or in 1, 2 and 3! This is some new concept they have come up with. In the first and second movie she literally uses a light saber like she's done it before. She's never fought with a light saber before. Then in the first film she's never flown ANYTHING but she can fly the Millenium Falcon with no problem. Seriously? I mean if anyone had a knack for flying ships it would be Han Solo, and you know his kids would have the gift. (More on Rey later.) Why is it so easy for her? She has never seen danger but literally runs right into it. Also she trusts Finn way too easily. Just saying. Finn clearly has a serious crush on Rey that is darn near suffocating. I mean from the beginning of all this he's super protective of her. That doesn't amount to anything... just so you know.
Four
These three movies care so much about animals, but no one cares about the kids being slaves on that vegas planet. They save the race animals and just leave the kids. Real nice.
Five
The main characters don't act like themselves. Not in the least. I mean, yes, they are older. Honestly, Han Solo is the only one who even comes close. Things about their hair, change their dialogue...just ugh.
Six
Why did Ben choose the name, Kylo Ren?? If he loved Vader so much and was determined to be like him, why not choose another name? Did Snope give it to him? Oh goodness... Snope... I almost forgot about him. Well firstly... eeewwww... and secondly why is he so strong, but he can't tell when his own apprentice is getting ready to kill him??
Seven
Last one... I had been aching for Ben and Rey to end up together. I mean... I was geeking out. Then at the end of the movie, Ben uses his life force to SAVE REY and DIES!!! What???? They kiss once... once! Then he dies and he's gone. On top of that, when Rey goes to Tattoine and she sees Han Solo and Leia, Ben is nowhere in sight. What the heck?? He died on the light side of the force and he gave his life to save Rey! But he chooses to not show up??
Eight
This is my biggest pet peeve and this is where you will get a MAJOR SPOILER. Rey is a Palpatine. How the hell did that happen?? Palpatine died because Darth Vader killed him. But NO. J.J. Abrams decided that Palpatine didn't die, he was brought back to life by the Dark Side of the force. I don't know about you, but I had no idea the force could heal since its never been in ANY of the movies. Supposedly, Palpatine's daughter was Rey's mother. The thing is... Palpatine would have more than likely had children during the first three films. It is highly unlikely he had children after Episode 3- he was like 70 in Ep. 3 so this daughter of his looks pretty young. Rey is like twenty?? Give or take a few years. It doesn't add up... and I can attest that NO ONE is sleeping with the creature who is now Palpatine. NO ONE. Anyway... apparently Palpatine's daughter is Rey's mother and that is why she doesn't know her family name, because she doesn't know her father's name. So I guess because she loved Ben and prob would have married him had he lived, that's why she took on the name Skywalker? I say that completely in theory.
I'm sorry... this has become by any means a rant. Let me talk about the good things I liked in the movies. Firstly, the graphics and cinematography was amazing. The actors fit their roles and I really enjoyed the diverse cast. We had some great newcomers who gave great performances. I loved Adam Driver as Ben Solo. He gave an amazing performance. I loved the films, I really did. It's just you have to watch them like they aren't connected to the previous films. The original characters only maintain a fraction of their original greatness. Luke Skywalker was reduced to a scared and frightened character, nothing like Luke would have been at all.
We didn't get hardly any backstory on any of the original characters, and I would have gladly had more than three movies to get all the information they could provide. The books written by Timothy Zahn, who is one name among many who have written story arcs for the Star Wars trilogy books, provided one of the more believable family dynamics of the Solo family. Luke and Leia are twins, which means that Leia has a high chance of having twins as well. Everyone thought that Ben and Rey would be twins or brother and sister at least.
Oh by the way... Palpatine created Snope. Let that sink in. So he's been controlling everything since the get-go. Weird.
Anyway... signing out and off. I highly recommend still seeing the movies if you haven't yet.
May you walk the road less traveled.
