As a recent interview with Yudkowsky highlighted, the signatories included AI pioneers and Turing Award winners like Dr. Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, the CEOs of OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic, and public figures from Bill Gates to Peter Singer.
Yet despite these warnings, the same companies remain locked in a high-stakes "race to the bottom" to build ever-more-powerful systems. In a sharp critique on the rationalist forum LessWrong, one reviewer notes the profound irony that OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, claimed author Eliezer Yudkowsky "was critical in the decision to start OpenAI"—an inspiration that Yudkowsky's institute now views as having "backfired spectacularly." This creates a deeply disturbing situation: the people best positioned to understand the existential risks are the same ones accelerating us toward them in what the book calls a "suicide race."
The severity of that race, the authors argue, demands a solution as drastic and globally coordinated as the problem it is meant to solve.
5. The only proposed off-ramp sounds like a geopolitical thriller

The authors call for a worldwide moratorium on all large-scale AI research and development that could lead to superintelligence, and their proposed enforcement is absolute. The treaty would have to be enforced with a grim readiness to use everything up to and including conventional airstrikes to destroy any rogue operation that refuses to comply.
