Hope beyond cement walls

the window

By Magnolia ShoalsPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room, a window that she had never known existed until the day her entire life changed. Lily, a dancer by heart, would often spin and pirouette through the courtyard of the compound where she had lived her whole life, shielded from the unknown and keeping her body and spirit in motion. However, on this particular day, even though she was feeling unwell, she decided to force herself to exercise. As she danced and spun, the dizzying motion caused her to stumble and fall at the feet of the reclusive artist, Caleb. She had never met him before, but had heard whispers about his dedication to his craft, spending endless hours locked away in his studio, pouring his soul into every stroke of his brush.

Caleb, kind and tender at heart, lifted her up and led her into a room in his studio, gently placing her on a sumptuous velvet green couch. And there, for the first time, she looked up and was able to see a glimpse of the outside world through a window that had previously been hidden from her view. The unknown world shone in all its glory, a beacon of hope and possibility.

The vista before her was breathtaking. The sky was a rich, dark gray with clouds slowly drifting across it. The land, though desolate, had rolling hills and fields of brown. In the distance, the sun glinted off the water, a reminder of the vast, open ocean that lay beyond the only life she had ever known. Lily was captivated by the enchanting view before her. She had always been warned that the outside world was a treacherous place filled with beastly creatures and peril at every corner. But through the window, it seemed almost peaceful, a place of beauty and wonder. It was the only connection to the world beyond the towering concrete walls that surrounded the city, a reminder of a time when the sky was blue and the grass was green.

Caleb saw the look on her face and smiled. "It's beautiful, isn't it?" he said. "I've always loved to paint it. It's the only way I can escape this place." Lily turned to him, her eyes wide with wonder. "Can we go out there?" she asked. "Can we leave the compound?" Caleb hesitated, handing her a glass of water. "I don't know," he said. "It's not safe out there. But maybe one day, we can find a way." Lily nodded, her heart racing. She had never dared to dream of leaving the compound, but now the possibility seemed almost within reach. She knew she had to find a way out, to see the world for herself, to experience all that it had to offer.

As she stood gazing out the window, her eyes fixed on the distant horizon, a teary melancholy washed over her as she turned towards the light. She knew it would be a treacherous and perilous place, but she was prepared to confront whatever obstacles came her way. She was eager to explore the world, uncover its mysteries and marvels, and share them with Caleb, the only person she had encountered who seemed to cherish adventure and art as she did. Together, they stood at the window, gazing out at the beautiful world beyond the compound. It was a moment of wonder and hope, a moment that would stay with them always. And as they looked out at the endless horizon, they knew that the outside world was waiting for them, a place of possibility and endless adventure.
