A Humanoid Robot Years in the Making

The development of Optimus is supported by Tesla's advanced AI and robotics systems. According to Musk, much of the training occurs in simulation, using reinforcement learning techniques where the robot learns from trial and error. These simulations help Optimus refine its movements before transferring them into the real world, a process known as "sim-to-real transfer."

Musk also mentioned that Tesla has made hundreds of improvements in the robot’s code and mechanical structure, leading to what he described as a "leap forward" in real-world application.

Elon Musk has long believed that Optimus could one day become more significant than Tesla’s car business. In multiple statements, he has envisioned a future where humanoid robots carry out repetitive and dangerous tasks, allowing humans to focus on creativity and innovation. Tesla has already started limited production of the Optimus robot at its Fremont factory. Musk announced that the company plans to deploy over 1,000 robots internally by the end of 2025 and begin commercial sales by 2026. Though pricing has not yet been confirmed, earlier estimates suggested a target cost of under $20,000 per unit.

Musk, known for bold claims and ambitious timelines, will need to follow up with sustained progress and practical deployments to truly change the landscape.
