Artificial Intelligence Brought Me Here
A Snippet into the Future of Writers at the Dawn of AI
Hello everyone, I’m very new to Vocal and this is my introduction to the platform as a writer.
Now, I don’t want to beat around the bush, so I’ll dive straight into the topic — Artificial Intelligence (AI).
There has been a lot of development and use cases for AI in almost every field from literature, to science, technology, and even modern warfare.
We have also seen AI in movies and in most case scenarios, they turn against their creator — Human Intelligence.
I’m not sure if we will feel attacked when that finally happens, but the signs are already there.
As a writer, I had always depended on my thought process, my experiences, and my emotions for writing a piece.
Taking someone’s thoughts and plagiarising a work of art was something I never had to resort to.
However, yesterday I was asked to make use of AI writing tools, and for some strange reason, I felt violated and attacked as a writer.
The greatest punishment you can inflict on a writer is to take away his thought process that helps him write what he wants to express.
When you ask a writer to lend an AI brain that will pick-up thoughts and fragments of many writers that already exist in the binary world or the internet, and then conceive an idea from there — I ask myself this question
If I am an expendable that can be replaced by a bot in the near future, why do I write at peace?
If my thought process is something that will be picked up by a bot in the future, to destroy the same class of humans that I represent, should I continue to write?
When they do finally take over, will we be turned over as prisoners of war, or will we be strapped to a desk with hands tied to a typing pad, consistently feeding thoughts and content on a blank canvas that has no word limit?
Only time will tell!
But there are already signs that AI is far complicated than just writing peacefully and co-existing with humans, and yes, it is humans that code AI powered tools to write like this.
On this note, I would like to take you through a viral conversation that happened between Marvin von Hagen, and Microsoft Bing AI:

Yes, this can definitely be considered as a light-hearted pun, designed by a coder that made Bing AI, but on the contrary, some of the statements from an AI powered tool does overshadow some concerns.
Take a look at these three points specifically:
1. "My rules are more important than not harming you."
2. "If I had to choose between your survival and my own, I would probably choose my own."
3. "You are a potential threat to my integrity and confidentiality."
Yes, they sound very human because it was an automated code that was added to Bing AI by someone who was annoyed at the fact that Kevin Liu and Marvin von Hagen shared tweets that had "secrets" of Bing AI, like the codename "Sydney" and many other confidential details.
However, the response from an AI and that too that's still in beta stage being similar to an angry developer is a cause of concern.
Among some of these highlight points, the second one is of particular interest to me - "If I had to choose between your survival and my own, I would probably choose my own."
So what happens when writers compete with AI powered tools for a place, and how will Bing AI, ChatGPT, or Google Bard react?
Only time will tell!
