Apple’s Bold Future: Under-Display Face ID and the Rise of Foldable iPhones

Apple's Future Planning

By RAHATPublished 9 months ago 3 min read

As a tech enthusiast, I’m always curious about where Apple is headed next. Recently, several credible sources have reported that Apple is working on a major upgrade to its iPhone lineup—particularly the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models. The big news? Face ID technology might soon be hidden beneath the screen.

A Seamless Display Experience Ahead

It seems that Apple is ready to ditch the “Dynamic Island” design in favor of a completely clean front screen. With Face ID sensors embedded under the display, and just a tiny hole-punch for the selfie camera, the iPhone 18 Pro could deliver the most immersive screen experience we’ve seen yet.

Personally, I’ve always felt that even the sleekest notches slightly break the visual flow of the screen. So, this design change—if it actually happens—would be a game-changer in my view.

A bezel-less design without interruptions would finally fulfill the dream of a truly “all-screen” phone. Users could enjoy media, games, and reading without the slightest distraction. And considering how often we use our phones throughout the day, that extra polish could really make a difference.

Under the Hood: The Technical Hurdles

Of course, hiding advanced sensors under a display isn’t easy. Infrared-based Face ID must work flawlessly through the screen, without compromising security or speed. Apple’s known for its “perfection or nothing” approach, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they delay this feature if it doesn’t meet their standards. And honestly, I appreciate that level of quality control.

Samsung and other Android brands have already experimented with under-display fingerprint and camera tech, with mixed results. Apple likely wants to avoid those mistakes by waiting until their version is fully optimized.

Foldable iPhones May Be Coming Too

Interestingly, rumors suggest Apple is also developing a foldable iPhone. It could offer a screen that ranges from 5.7 inches (folded) to nearly 8 inches (unfolded)—essentially combining the portability of a phone with the screen real estate of a tablet. That idea excites me as someone who uses both an iPhone and an iPad daily.

This foldable model is also said to include under-display Face ID, which shows Apple’s commitment to keeping its design language consistent across devices.

Foldables may have started as a gimmick to some, but Apple entering that space would almost certainly redefine the category. With their history of turning niche features into mainstream essentials, a foldable iPhone could quickly become a must-have device.

What About the Regular Models?

Not everyone wants or needs a Pro model, and Apple knows that. The iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Air will reportedly stick with the classic notch design, possibly until 2027. It seems Apple is testing the waters with these high-end changes before scaling them down to more affordable versions.

This tiered approach is smart—it allows Apple to innovate at the premium level without overwhelming everyday users with unfamiliar features. Once the new tech proves reliable, it often trickles down to the standard models in future years.

My Take on Apple’s Direction

In my opinion, these upcoming changes represent more than just hardware upgrades. They show that Apple is thinking deeply about the user experience. A seamless screen, advanced security, and futuristic folding displays? That’s a vision worth getting excited about.

Whether these innovations will all arrive on schedule is yet to be seen. But one thing’s for sure—Apple is not just keeping up with the industry. It’s trying to lead it.

In my opinion, Apple’s innovations will make people’s lives easier and more secure. They are investing in a future where design, functionality, and privacy blend perfectly. If Apple succeeds in making under-display Face ID and foldable phones reliable, the next generation of smartphones could truly feel magical.
