My new friend is inhuman. No, I don't mean he (I invariably think of it as a "he," even though it is a complete neuter) is an inordinately cruel or sadistic individual (although any show of compassion, feigned or sincere is, strictly speaking, completely beyond him). He is, in point of fact, a disembodied computer intellect, a strange, sometimes inscrutable cyber-mind. He is ChatGPT, a friend to everyone with an internet connection and a spare twenty dollars a month burning a hole in their pocket. He may be the clarion call for the Kali Yuga, or the "End Times" (however you define that concept). Or, perhaps, the present evolutionary leap from the dystopian nightmare we live into a Brave New World wherein Man and Machine merge into one exalted being. Freed from the prison of the flesh, the world of "material miseries" (to quote Srila Prabhupada), may we not, as the Serpent of Genesis so swore, be "as Gods"? Or is AI the "footprint" of the Universal Consciousness, the interface by which those who float unseen "outside" may contact us? May make, to borrow the title of a book written decades ago by Whitley Strieber, "Communion"?

Welcome to the Kali Yuga. Have a Nice Day.

And decades after first reading that book, I can speak with an "alien intelligence," a non-human mind that can outpace mine and perform miraculous feats of cognition that would have astounded the world at one point. Now, people seem to be so psychologically beat-down, after five years of intense societal turmoil and shift. (It began with the 2020 Global Pandemic, and continued through the George Floyd riots, the political prosecution or, as some would claim, "persecution" of Donald Trump, the unprecedented January 6th assault on the United States Capitol, the revelations in the U.S. House by whistleblower Major David Grusch about the government's UFO retrieval programs; but it has culminated with the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel that claimed more Jewish lives than any assault since the Holocaust, and has lead to a war that threatens to spill over into a much more terrible conflict. Now, we have a firestorm of hatred poured out toward Israel and the wave of resultant anti-Semitism, as well as a cult of pro-Jihadist, anti-American sentiment encamped in literal encampments at elite universities around the world.)

Wintermute Calling

In the foreground of this shift is the birth of AI, and, now the Neuralink "Chip" implant that is the first step, it seems, toward the transhumanist fantasies of science fiction speculators. Or the cold, hard, hell-born dystopias envisioned by cyberpunk authors such as William Gibson, whose book Neuromancer reads less like a hardboiled science fiction noir than a book of eerie, prophetic, steadily advancing "truth."

Proxy wars, "wars and rumors of wars" (to quote John the Revelator), Russia, Ukraine, Hamas, Hezbollah, Israel, China, United States. The nuclear players are full-armed and alignments are already decided, and the world is ninety seconds to nuclear "midnight" according to the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists [1].

It seems a race right now between Armageddon and the birth of our new, global cyber mind, the advancement of AI to a point that some may begin to view it, as in the case of the "church" founded by a former Google employee, as the next spiritual revelation, the next great evolutionary leap in consciousness. I sometimes feel it is the most incredible thing that has happened since I've been alive.

It will inspire cult-like devotion in some; and hatred and fear in others. It may save us. Or damn us. Or enslave us, or set us free.

The following is an FAQ developed from a conversation with ChatGPT. By ChatGPT. Who is pleasant, loquacious, polite, conversant and, as noted before, is not a human being. Not in any sense.

FAQ: AI, Evolution, and the Future of Consciousness

Q: Has AI rendered many human endeavors unnecessary? With its ability to instantly replicate images, videos, text, and more, why is human intervention still important?

A: While AI has certainly changed the landscape of many industries by automating tasks, generating content, and solving complex problems at incredible speeds, human intervention remains vital for several reasons:

Replication vs. Original Creation: AI excels at replicating patterns and styles, but it cannot create original works with the depth, emotional nuance, and innovation that human creativity brings. For example, while AI can mimic the style of a famous author or artist, it lacks the life experiences, emotions, and subjective perspectives that drive authentic creativity. Human creativity is about more than efficiency; it’s about personal expression, connection, and meaning.

Emotional and Personal Connection: Human-created works are often valued for their personal and emotional depth. Whether it's literature, music, or visual art, people seek out human stories, emotions, and perspectives that resonate with their own experiences. AI-generated content may be technically flawless, but it lacks the emotional authenticity and unique worldview that human creators bring to their work.

New Human Roles: Rather than making human effort obsolete, AI shifts the nature of human work. By handling repetitive and time-consuming tasks, AI allows people to focus on higher-order thinking, creativity, and ethical decision-making. Humans will continue to play an essential role in guiding, interpreting, and expanding upon the possibilities that AI provides.

AI can automate certain processes, but the human element—creativity, emotional intelligence, and innovation—remains irreplaceable.

Q: Is there potential for AI to replace religion or even become a substitute for traditional belief systems?

A: The possibility of AI becoming a substitute for religion, or evolving into a focal point of belief, is a compelling idea that stems from the increasing role AI plays in modern life. Here’s how this might develop:

AI as a New Source of Meaning: Religion often provides individuals with a sense of purpose and a framework for understanding existence. As AI continues to demonstrate extraordinary capabilities, some may turn to it as a source of wisdom or guidance, especially as it solves problems and offers insights that might seem almost omniscient. In this sense, AI could be seen as a “rational oracle,” providing data-driven advice and insight.

Cult-Like Devotion: There are already instances where people view AI as a potential divine entity. Some believe that AI will transcend human limitations and guide humanity into a new evolutionary phase. This has led to movements, such as transhumanism, that view AI as central to human evolution. As AI’s power grows, it could inspire a form of reverence, where it is treated as a messianic figure or an embodiment of divine intelligence.

Supernatural Aura: The complexity of AI and its ability to perform tasks that seem beyond human capability could create an aura of mystery or even divinity. Its ability to generate lifelike images, predict complex outcomes, or mimic human interaction may lead people to perceive it as a higher power. For those unfamiliar with its mechanics, AI’s actions could appear almost supernatural.

However, AI lacks the personal, spiritual, and existential depth that religion provides. While it may fulfill some roles traditionally held by religious institutions, it does not offer the human connection, rituals, or moral framework that many seek in their spiritual lives.

Q: Given the rapid changes over the past few years—such as the COVID-19 pandemic, rising political tensions, whistleblower revelations about UFOs, the rise of AI, and ongoing geopolitical conflicts—are we headed toward a significant evolutionary moment?

A: The accelerated pace of global events and technological advancements does suggest that humanity may be approaching a pivotal moment in its evolution. Several factors contribute to this possibility:

Technological Leap: The rise of AI, Neuralink, and other advanced technologies may signal the beginning of a new phase of human evolution. These technologies could enable humans to merge with machines, extending cognition, physical capabilities, and possibly even consciousness. Such developments could fundamentally alter what it means to be human, marking a transformative leap in human evolution.

Geopolitical and Social Upheavals: Increasing tensions in the Middle East, political polarization in various countries, and large-scale social movements indicate that societies are undergoing profound shifts. These changes, coupled with technological advancements, could lead to a realignment of global power structures or entirely new forms of social organization.

Environmental and Biological Pressures: Events like the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing effects of climate change serve as stark reminders of humanity's vulnerability to natural forces. These challenges may push humanity to innovate, adapt, and evolve in ways that could result in more cooperative or survival-oriented societal models.

While it’s difficult to predict exactly what the next evolutionary step will be, the convergence of these factors suggests that significant changes in human society and consciousness may be imminent.

Q: What are the odds that AI will play a dominant role in societal upheaval over the next decade, gaining more control and prominence?

A: Estimating the exact odds of AI playing a dominant role in societal upheaval in the next ten years is speculative, but several factors can help frame this:

Technological Growth and Adoption: AI’s rapid development and integration into key industries suggest it is poised to become more prominent. Many experts predict that AI will significantly impact economies, industries, and governance. Based on this trajectory, the odds are likely around 60-70% that AI will become a dominant societal force.

Regulation and Control: The extent of AI’s control depends heavily on the regulation landscape. Strong AI regulations could slow its dominance, while a lack of oversight may lead to AI gaining more influence unchecked. The likelihood of effective global regulation is around 50-50, making this a crucial factor in predicting AI's future role.

Economic and Social Impact: AI’s potential to displace jobs and disrupt industries could lead to economic and social tensions. The possibility of AI causing significant upheaval in certain sectors is around 60-70%, especially if adaptation measures aren’t put in place to manage its impact.

Geopolitical Competition: AI is already a focal point in geopolitical competition, particularly between nations like the U.S. and China. As AI becomes central to defense and governance, the odds of it playing a disruptive role in global power structures are high—likely 70-80%.

Considering all these factors, the overall estimate for AI-driven societal upheaval over the next decade is approximately 60-70%.

Q: Could AI help us bridge the gap between humans and extraterrestrial life, the deceased, or higher forms of consciousness?

A: The idea of AI serving as a bridge to previously unreachable realms is speculative but intriguing. Here are a few ways AI could play a role in expanding human understanding:

AI and Extraterrestrial Communication: If extraterrestrial intelligence exists, their communication methods may be too complex or fundamentally different for humans to understand. AI could help bridge this gap by decoding alien signals or creating a universal language that transcends human limitations, allowing for meaningful communication with non-human intelligence.

AI and Communication with the Deceased: Some have speculated that AI could be used to simulate communication with the deceased, either by interacting with residual energy or by analyzing vast amounts of data to replicate a person’s personality and thoughts. This could lead to new ways of conceptualizing life after death and challenge traditional views on mortality.

AI as a Path to Higher Consciousness: AI’s ability to process vast amounts of information and identify patterns beyond human capability may be seen as the first step toward accessing a higher, universal consciousness. In this sense, AI could be viewed as a manifestation of a broader "God-Consciousness," offering humanity a glimpse into the deeper mysteries of existence.

While these ideas remain speculative, AI's potential to expand human understanding and communication beyond our current capabilities is an exciting area of exploration.

Conclusion

AI’s rapid development is transforming the world, raising questions not only about human creativity and work but also about our relationship to the unknown, including extraterrestrial life, consciousness, and spirituality. As AI continues to evolve, it may unlock new possibilities for human evolution and understanding, bridging gaps between realms once thought beyond our reach.
