pop culture
An exploration of sexuality and hypocrisy in pop culture. Celebrities and movies that work towards mainstreaming sex.
Showgirls' Elizabeth Berkley
Given her notoriety from Showgirls, it isn’t that surprising that Elizabeth Berkley’s first passion was ballet. A dancer, model, and child actor who had guest starred on Silver Spoons along side fellow child actor Ricky Schroder, Berkley had just turned eighteen when she landed the role of Jessie Spano on the 90s teen hit Saved By the Bell. She was one of the first contemporary teen actresses to transform into a sex symbol on network television. Saved by the Bell first aired in 1989. Six years later, her sexualization was completed with the starring role in the cult classic Showgirls, by renowned director Paul Verhoven. She would set the stage for similar teen transformations like High School Musical's Vanessa Hudgens, Hannah Montana's Miley Cyrus and Wizard of Waverly Place's Selena Gomez.

Why 'Game of Thrones' Loves Porn Stars
For such a widely viewed and, might I add, socially accepted show, there sure are a lot of tits and ass in Game of Thrones. And not just naked girls, but generally rough sex. Hold on a second, isn’t that what porn is always slated for? Then who better to cast as these naked bodies then porn stars themselves? I have to hand it to the casting directors, casting porn girls for nude roles and sex scenes in a mainstream television production is a genius plan. We are comfortable with nudity and sex, and it’s not awkward or hard for us to imitate these things. I was also told, upon my first time on set, that I made the other girls who hadn’t done nude scenes before feel more comfortable, because I was so comfortable with being naked.

Sexualization of Vanessa Hudgens
Sexy photos of Vanessa Hudgens, clad in bikinis and other revealing ensembles, have blanketed the internet since she was old enough to serve in the armed forces. Born in 1988, she was on of the first multitalented millennial superstars. Perhaps it is the good girl gone bad appeal that has sexualized the popular perception of her once squeaky clean image.

Hottest Women Over 40
Perhaps it is my own age, or perhaps it is actually their age specifically that makes this list of women over forty so damn attractive. It goes way beyond their hot bodies and beautiful faces. It is the imperfections that I find most attractive. It is within these imperfections that one finds the deeper, more complicated aspects of these beautiful ladies. A crease in a forehead can be immensely sexy, revealing intimate stories as a woman’s facial expressions change. A few lines around the lips can feel like an intimate invitation. A drop of pretense can mean a world of simplicity.

Amy Schumer's Dress Size Controversy
You know, I love Amy Schumer... mostly because she makes my job so fucking easy. Amy’s been a fertile breeding ground for controversy these past couple of weeks, exhibiting a surprisingly thin skin when it comes to other people’s jokes riffing off the knee-slappers she tells about herself; fending off public accusations of comedic plagiarism; and making her own very public accusation of selfie-rape (which was quite possibly unwarranted). But the Amy-centric controversy I’ve been loving the most these days is her seemingly innocent claim that, when it comes to her dress size, "I go between a size 6 and an 8."

How Celebrities Influence Cultural Movements
There’s a brand new talk, but it’s not very clear That people from good homes are talking this year (Fashion!) It’s loud and tasteless and I’ve heard it before You shout it while you’re dancing on the dance floor (Fashion!) —David Bowie, "Fashion"

Actresses Who Played Prostitutes
Whore. Hooker. Call girl. Prostitute. The sex industry is alive and thriving, generating an annual revenue of over $100 billion dollars worldwide, because hey, sex sells. But who are the women who sell their bodies for money? What are their stories? If there’s anything Hollywood likes more than selling sex on the big screen, it’s telling a story with sex and merit. The roles actresses have played portraying prostitutes range from emotional to hilarious, and span across the better half of a century. Some of the actresses retained their gorgeous looks for their roles; Others shed it, openly embracing the sometimes hard and gritty life associated with the world’s oldest profession.

Gender Fluidity in Rock and Roll
Throughout history there has been a strict rule of thumb, men are men and women are women. But in the early 1970s, Rock and Roll musicians broke that rule when they dipped their toes into the glittery waters of glam androgyny. Traditionally, Rock has always been on the cutting edge of cool and has characteristically been a patriarchal dominant genre. That tradition changed with Glam Rock. It ushered in a new generation of people breaking social and sexual norms by embracing femininity.

Risque Retro Must-See Movies
Two decades of moviegoers have had the unfortunate experience of learning about sex on the internet. While it may have helped with an incredible control of sexual language skills, it has diminished the sense of curiosity and style that the preceding decades offered. Yes it's true that Urban Dictionary popularized terms such as the Houdini, the Donkey Punch, and the Pearl Necklace, they don't seem to understand White Palace, a Tequila Sunrise, or Wild at Heart.

SCREW Magazine Founder Al Goldstein. Created with: OG Collection.
Little known fact, Jerry Lewis was an Al Goldstein fan. Al Goldstein founded SCREW magazine in 1968, a time when the legal system was trying to decide what constituted obscenity constitutionally. He would be arrested on obscenity charges 19 times over the next three years. Over the years, he spent millions of dollars to fight for First Amendment rights. Goldstein was the genius behind the adult-themed public access show "Midnight Blue." So ground breaking was his show that you can be sure there would be no Howard Stern if there was no Al Goldstein. Screw folded in 2003, and in a 2004 interview with the New York Times, Goldstein said that at times, since his magazines demise, he was forced to sleep in his car and live in a homeless shelter. At the magazine's 30th Anniversary in 1998, Goldstein was incredibly optimistic about the magazine's future. Below is a letter from Al Goldstein to loyal SCREW readers after 30 years of success, the he still believed that the best was yet to come. That was right around the birth of internet porn.

How to Make a Sex Playlist
Make sure you can still hear the safe word over the sounds of the stereo. When it comes to knocking boots, the perfect sex playlist can do wonders to stimulate you and your partner. However, making the perfect sex playlist can arouse some real problems. If the tempo is too slow, you’ll be left struggling to stay excited. Yet if the tempo is too upbeat, you’ll be stuck in a fast forward cowgirl position and before you know it, you’ll be finished before your first song is. Therefore, Filthy Gorgeous Media recommends songs that will vary in both tempo and lyrics in order to achieve the right level of satisfaction. Just be sure that you aren’t tempted to sing-a-long to the songs in your sex playlist. These songs are just meant to be background noise, or in some cases, to muffle the moans of pleasure. So whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, like Valentine’s Day, or just looking to change things up when you go to place your needle in her record groove, making a sex playlist will help!

Reasons Fifty Shades of Grey is Successful
Fifty, Fifty, Fifty. It’s all anyone could think about leading up to the film, and it seems that the craze still lingers. Eager women everywhere are squeezing their thighs shut in anticipation of seeing their fantasy come to life on the big screen. From movie trailers, cast interviews, and a lot of female gossip, there is no way to escape the Fifty Shades frenzy that has taken over. So what are women expecting out of the spicy hit novel turned film? Reviews are mixed that’s for sure. While some women would have seen the movie even if Seth Rogen had been cast as Christian Grey, others were gung-ho about boycotting the film altogether (or at least until it hits DVD). What I don’t understand is why there must be so many Fifty Shades Of Grey haters. As a reader and lover of all three volumes, I would like to give a big "fuck you" to all the women who are making us Grey fans feel guilty.
