Chapter 5 Lucas slept better than he thought he would. Perhaps the role of street rat had reminded his body how to find sleep anywhere. When he finally awoke it was midmorning, the sky grey with rain as it fell in buckets. Oh yes, a street rat would be very grateful to have somewhere dry with the rain like that. He was disappointed that Sergeant Walker hadn’t come by that morning but the man probably had duty back at the Gold Gate. Not even rain could stop the flow of commerce in the Empire. Lucas would just have to wait for him to come by later that evening. It also gave the youth time to plan his next move.

Chapter 4 The shadows of the night lengthened as the sun dipped below the western horizon. One by one, as their poles fell into shadows, the lights that illuminated the better maintained streets of the Gulch at night flickered to life with the power of magic. On avenues, less frequented by Guildsmen on business and traveling Nobility, they had to make due with oil lamps hung from poles, or nothing at all. The lights gave the citizens only a semblance of safety, an illusion of security thanks to patrols by the city watch. In the alleyways and shadows of the labyrinth like streets of the Gulch men and women waited for the unwary to wander by. Whores lingered in the fitful pools of light provided by those oil lamps as they sought to separate men from their coin. Moans of passion as well as groans of pain could be heard from the many narrow alleys. Children of the street, called Minnows, snatched purses and begged for coin under the watchful eyes of their Sharks.

Chapter 3 There were multiple routes to leave the House of Sighing Shadows. Lucas took the one that would keep his face from being seen by any of the clients who wandered the halls of the brothel. From his room he opened the hidden door that led into the servant’s passages behind the walls. It allowed the servants to go from room to room unseen by clients, and it also allowed for guards to keep an eye on the courtesans and their clients. One never knew when a client might decide that their wealth and influence would allow them to get away with more than was contracted for.

Chapter 2 It was a beautiful late spring afternoon. The sun was bright and warm with nary a cloud to mar the sky. A gentle breeze blew in from the Dragon’s Tears river which kept the temperature in the gardens comfortable enough for the denizens of the House to enjoy a little time outside in the sun. Lucas had already been up for hours. He’d met with his dance instructor that morning as he and one of the girls practiced for a performance they would give in a few weeks. The choreography was a sensuous delight and was sure to heat the blood of all who watched. The House would auction off a night with Lucas and his partner after the performance. It was guaranteed to bring in piles of gold dragons.
