Colin Pops the Question
After the show had ended, she waited for him so they could walk back to their motel room together, but when two o'clock arrived and he was still surrounded by adoring fans wanting autographs, she gave up and asked a guard to escort her back to the room. She was so exhausted she didn't have time to change her clothes before collapsing onto the bed. She didn't even awaken when Colin crept into the room several hours later and, taking care not to disturb her, took a quick shower and slipped between the sheets beside her.
He was still snoring gently when she awakened around ten the following morning. She took a quick shower, then heard her stomach growl and was torn between waking Colin and going to the buffet alone. She finally decided to sneak to the buffet and carry away enough food for both of them.
Colin awakened a couple of hours later, and she fixed a plate for him. "I'm sorry the food's cold," she said.
"Where did you get it?" he asked.
She told him, and he burst out laughing. "You sneaky devil, you!"
She sat on the bed beside him as he began to eat. "We're quite a contrast, aren't we?" he observed. "Here I sit in my pajamas with my hair all mussed, while you're neat and pretty in your blue shorts and red shirt with hardly a hair out of place."
"That's what comes of getting up early," she teased.
"Was I to blame that those mad autograph seekers wouldn't let me go until nearly five in the morning?"
They both laughed. "So if this is what it's gonna be like for the next two weeks, I have to say it's not bad," Jana remarked.
"I'm simply thrilled to be getting paid so well for doing what I love," Colin replied. "And to have the lady who's become so dear to me at my side is the icing on the cake."
"Aw, have I become dear to you?" Jana was truly touched.
"Absolutely!"
"Thank you." She blushed, suddenly feeling shy. "You've become very dear to me, too."
He hugged her and gave her a passionate kiss.
For the following two weeks, Jana spent most of her time sight seeing and getting to know Las Vegas while Colin rehearsed with Patricia and then performed before an enthralled audience every night. Although she was enjoying herself, it seemed to Jana that she and Colin were like ships passing in the night, and before long, she was looking forward to their return to California and their normal lives.
The night before they were due to leave Las Vegas, Colin took Jana out to dinner at the fanciest restaurant he could find. It was small and intimate, with soft lighting and luxurious seats. "There's a wedding chapel right there in Caesars Palace," he remarked as they were eating.
Startled, Jana put her fork down. "Do you mean..."
"I know we've only known each other for a few months, Jana, but I've fallen very deeply in love with you, and I know you're the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with." He slipped to one knee beside her. "Will you marry me?" As she stared, speechless, he slipped a small object from his pocket and showed it to her. It was a ring with a plain gold band and a single diamond. "It was my grandmother's," he told her. "My grandfather gave it to her before he left to fight in the Battle of Somme. He left at the beginning of summer and returned to her in November, and they got married on Christmas Day."
"Oh, Colin!" Tears came to her eyes. "Yes, I'll marry you, but not here in Las Vegas. Nick and Tracy are my best friends in the whole world, and I can't get married without their being there to celebrate with us."
"I understand." He looked disappointed but smiled. "We can start planning the wedding when we get home."
They spent that night in the motel and began the drive back to California the following morning. Jana couldn't stop gazing at the engagement ring on her finger. She couldn't wait to show it to her friends.
Colin stopped at a deli for lunch before continuing on to the apartment. "Well, I guess this is ta-ta for now," he said as they stood outside the door. "I'll be seeing you again real soon, of course." He hugged and kissed her, then left. She stared after him, already missing his presence.
She was so tired she napped for several hours, then unpacked her suitcase and prepared dinner for herself, Nick, and Tracy.
Tracy got home first. "You're back!" she exclaimed.
Jana grinned and held her hand up so her friend could see the engagement ring.
