Grey

I look around the yard in front of me trying to find where the sound had come from, there was nothing but darkness before me.

Even if someone were hiding out there, I probably wouldn't see them.

Then I lift my head slightly, peering over to the other side of the deck; it was then I saw a girl sitting there in the darkness. Her hands grasping onto her thighs, rubbing them up and down nervously.

From where I'm standing I can just make out her eyes. They are wide, watching me, she looks utterly terrified.

Ah, fuck.

"Hello?" I question, walking towards her wearily, not wanting to scare her any more than I apparently already have.

The closer I get, the more I take notice of her appearance.

Firstly, I am 100% sure I have never met this girl before, I'd remember that face.

Firstly, I am 100% sure I have never met this girl before, I'd remember that face

That stunning face.

"Hey," I whisper, throwing my hands up in a show of truce, relaxing my eyes to appear as friendly and non-threatening as I can.

I watch as her eyes study me, the closer I get, the more relaxed her body becomes.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you," I smile down at her, with my most genuine smile I can muster now.

I thought about giving her the smirk I know girls fall all over when we are on stage, but I decided not to do that in fear of frightening her anymore.

She doesn't say anything, just watches me intently, studying me.

Now in the light of the moon, I can see her more clearly.

Observing her face trying to see if she is still scared of me. I notice her eyes for a second before they dart away from mine, undoubtedly, she is uncomfortable with the eye contact.

Note to self, don't make eye contact.

But that doesn't stop her eyes from moving lower, quite clearly checking me out, roaming over me.

A knowing smirk spreads on my face, and I do my best pose for her examination making sure I show off anything good.

The fact she is looking over my body sends a surge of adrenaline to my drunken ego, he doesn't need any more encouragement right now.

"I thought I was alone out here," I start, trying to bring her eyes back to meet mine, but she doesn't budge instead focusing her gaze to her hands sitting on her thighs.

Then I glance at the empty seat next to her gesturing to it with my outstretched arm, hoping she would catch on to what I was asking.

She takes a noticeable deep breath before a smile meets my stare, giving me permission to sit.

I guess my friendly smile worked on her.

I take a seat next to her, making sure to keep enough distance between us as possible on this bench.

"Why are you hiding in the corner?" I question, leaning back crossing my arms over my chest, glancing over at her I caught her watching me, studying me, again.

She looks away quickly, an embarrassed smile curving her lips now, which was a bad move, now my drunk mind was drawn to the curve of her lips, they're so pouty and perfect.

"I thought this would be the best hiding spot; clearly I was right since you didn't notice me here at first," she says, the soft tone of her voice sending shivers through me.

No idea why I reacted that way to her voice, but hey I can't control my bodies reaction when under the influence, or ever.

"If only you didn't mutter a sound, I probably wouldn't have seen you over here, how unlucky for you." I joke softly nudging my shoulder into hers, and she lets out a slight chuckle, still refusing to meet my stare.

She keeps looking straight up to the sky, my favorite thing to look at and it's noticeably hers too in this moment.

"Honestly a party wasn't my first choice tonight, so I thought I could take advantage of this dark corner and just look up so I could admire the stars decorating the night sky." She whispers into the air, jerking my attention back towards the sky, understanding her fascination completely.

"If you ask me, this is what the perfect night consists of, the stars and darkness covering us," she almost whispers. The relaxed smile on her face, her eyes closed, not taking her attention away from above.

I can't help but glance back at her and trace the outline of her profile in the moonlight.

Her perfect nose, with what I now notice is a nose ring, so cute I honestly want to boop it, but I have to remind myself she isn't a dog and that would be weird.

I need to control my drunk urges. This girl doesn't know me and doesn't need me touching her nose, at least not before she knows my name.

"I'm Carter," I announce, desperate for her to look at me, even for a second.

She glances back towards me, soft smile and all and I melt entirely.

Shit, where is Brodie when I need her.

I can't be drunk, and around a girl who looks like this, she is undeniably beautiful.

"Lake," she replies, the smile reaching her eyes finally, my goal achieved a genuine smile.

"Lake?" I chuckle, with a huge grin, so she wants to play games with me, I see how it is.

"If you didn't want to give me your real name, you could at least give me a believable one and let me down easily." I joke, her look of panic isn't the reaction I expected.

"What? No, Lake is my real name, I swear!"

The panic in her voice and her eyes tell me she isn't lying, my teasing smile drops, replaced by a smug grin.

I'm not going to let her know that I believe her, this is too funny.

"It's fine; I wouldn't give my name to a strange guy who screams profanities for no reason either."

Winking at her, I chuckle, her face covered in embarrassment a soft red hue on her cheeks.

She is too easy to work up and I like that.

At least this got me smiling again.

I give my attention back up to the sky, basking in this moment and in Lakes presence.

If she was sent here to make my night better, I have someone out there in the universe to thank.

I hear her sigh next to me.

An accomplished smile spreads over my face, and any thoughts of the drama with Reid and Brodie earlier leaves me. Replaced by the calm silence and the soft scent of strawberries.

Instinctively I lean closer to Lake sniffing the air as subtly as I can hoping she doesn't notice, but just as my luck would have it, she does.

She pulls back slowly, and I stiffen, not wanting to make any sudden movements causing her to flee.

"Do I smell?" she asks, holding her hands over her mouth, I'm guessing she's testing her own breath just to be sure.

Ha, adorable.

"No, you smell good, great even, sorry I just needed to breathe it in a little more." She laughs, and I look at her smiling, there was no reason to lie.

Nothing is better than a girl who smells so good you could eat her. Unless of course said girl isn't my girlfriend. Fuck.

I slowly slide over, inching towards her, I don't know why I just feel like I need to be closer.

Lake is the calm I needed to find tonight, and like fuck, I'm going to let this pass me by.

Maybe being twenty-one won't be so bad after all.
