Lake
Aspen lifts onto her elbows; I look over at her confused. Her eyes burn into me, the wicked glow in them unnerving me.
"Wait, you never told us what you did all night; you just disappeared until you came to find us later to leave." Aspen states.
I was hoping that both Aspen and Lexi forgot about last night. At the very least, I was praying they would just forget to question what I did last night.
I didn't want to discuss Carter or the way he made me feel. At least up until it all went very wrong.
"I sat outside all night, basking in the night sky," I blurt out, the first thing coming to my mind and really, it wasn't a complete lie.
"You mean to tell me you didn't meet anyone? that party was packed with potential for you." Aspen explains, bewildered by my need to sit outside alone at a party full of what I know were hot guys.
I decide the best plan of action here was to tell her I did meet someone but leave out the details like his name or the fact he had a girlfriend. This way she will drop it and accept that I did, in fact, meet someone but it just didn't work out. It's that simple.
"I met a guy outside; we just sat and talked for a while; that was it." There we go. I told her the truth, vaguely. An excited squeal erupts from her, startling me, I wasn't expecting that reaction.
"That's great! What was his name?" she questions, and here's the part where I lie. It's for the best she might know who Carter is and I don't need to deal with that if she does. I don't want to cause unnecessary drama in his relationship for his drunken flirtation with a random girl at a party.
"His name, Ben." Ben? That was the best I could come up with? Mentally smacking myself in the face, ugh.
"Ben?" she questions, "I wonder if I know him," she trails off humming to herself. She continues thinking, trying to remember any Bens she might potentially know. I pray there is no one in her memory bank by the name of Ben, and if there was.... let's hope that he doesn't have a girlfriend. Shit.
I didn't think of that before I chose such a common name. I pray I don't ruin some innocent couple's relationship, that's the last thing I want or need.
I need to change the subject fast.
My mind jumps straight to the perfect stranger. His hard, chiseled abs, and the way he wiped my phone down for me. We can't forget that smile. Nope, I decide then and there that Aspen doesn't need to know about him either.
If I told Aspen about him, well, let's just say I wouldn't hear the end of it. Besides, I don't even know his name.
Then I remembered his messages last night; maybe I should give this stranger a chance. He was insanely charming, it couldn't hurt, right?
Aspen clicks her fingers in front of my face. I look over at her, and she's watching me with questions in her stare, frustration etched on her face, but I just smile and brush it off.
"Did you end up seeing your brother last night?" that was a safe question. I've never met Aspen's brother or his band mates, so I have no idea what they look like, who knows if I even crossed their paths last night.
Of course, I've listened to their band, but I wasn't ever interested enough to search online for them and look at their photos.
After all, the guys in the band were close friends and the family of my best friend, so there was no reason for me to look them up and drool over them.
Knowing what I do about them from the countless stories in Aspens library of adventures with the band, there's no doubt in my mind that every guy in that band is hot.
The girls continually fighting for their attention lead me to that conclusion.
"I messaged him, but I never actually saw him. I think he was off somewhere with his girlfriend all night, no doubt." she retorts, rolling her eyes.
"Do you not like his girlfriend?" I ask, curious now; Aspen has never said much about his girlfriend in the past, I guess now I know why. The tone of her voice not doing a very good job of masking her feelings towards the girl.
"She's not terrible, I guess." I scoff at her response, that doesn't sound friendly in the slightest.
"She just doesn't deserve my brother. I've never trusted her intentions even if she has been with him now for like five years," she waves her hands around brushing the subject off, obviously wanting to drop the topic of her brother's girlfriend.
"I'm sorry you didn't get to spend any time with him. I know you were looking forward to seeing him there," I say, taking her cue and changing the topic of conversation.
Her sad smile makes me hurt for her; I know how much her brother means to her and how hard the distance has been for her since his band's popularity has started to grow. Which also means he is away from home a lot and I know that upsets Aspen.
"Yeah, I told him I'd come over and see him some time though, maybe I'll go later today to distract myself from this shit with Ryan."
"I think that's a great idea, I'm sure your brother will be happy to see you, but I wouldn't tell him about Ryan. We don't want your brother and I getting arrested for Murder." I laugh but Aspen stares at me, with wide eyes.
"Why would you be arrested too?" she questions, "well obviously because I am your brother's accomplice," she takes in an audible breath, laughing along with me.
A funny image pops up in my head, Grey and I locked away for the murder of Ryan; this would be a more straightforward picture to imagine if I knew what Grey looked like.
I picture the male version of Aspen. Dark, beautiful eyes, dark hair, tanned skin, if Aspens looks are anything to go by, Grey would be handsome, insanely so.
She laughs now, a genuine loud Aspen style laugh, and my heart warms knowing she was happier than when she burst through my door not even half an hour ago.
"Can we nap though, I think I may be dying." I groan out, a yawn leaving my mouth at the same time.
Aspen nods, closing her eyes, and I follow her lead, letting the silence and warmth of my bed and Aspens company take over, sleep washing over both of us.
"Ugh, I am going to kill him!"
Aspens shrieking rips me away from my dreams and back to the hell of my bedroom. Once again Aspen waking me up from a deep, comfortable sleep.
"What is going on?" I mumble, still half asleep.
"Oh Lake, I didn't mean to wake you up," she apologizes, "I want to kill my brother, though, and you're going to help me."
Wait; what?
"Why are we killing your brother?" Okay, now I'm confused.
"Well tonight you're coming with me to his birthday show, and we are going to murder him," she states, smiling at me like I won't have any disagreements to this.
"Okay, first, what show, and where?"
"Secondly, you still didn't explain why we are going to kill him."
She rolls her eyes, "he called me Ass, his annoying nickname for me," I can't help it, I laugh, why didn't I ever think of that for a nickname? Genius.
"Okay, yes to the show, but I'm going to have to take a rain check on the murder of your brother."
Aspen is already up out of bed and walking towards my bedroom door; she turns back to face me, looking a lot happier than she did when she first arrived.
"Okay fine, be ready in a few hours I need to eat before we go anywhere."
She walks out of my room; I sigh unlocking my phone to see any missed messages.
One new message, from an unknown number.
"Meet me tonight at Club R; I'll be the devilishly handsome guy waiting for the sexy stranger to arrive. - Unknown."
What a coincidence, I chuckle to myself knowing all too well who this is.
"Luckily for you, I'm free, and I'll be there will bells on. Literally, I'm going to hand-sew bells onto the hem of my dress just for you, you know, so you don't miss me in the crowd. - Lake."
