You, My Shining Eccedentesiast

Made this piece for a highschool essay competition. I didn't win it so I thought I might as well send it here <3

“The sky and I are one and the same,

it too cried the day you left.”

You entered my life like a lone flower, blooming miraculously in the harsh Arctic tundra.

You, who had done the impossible, thawed the snow and brought forth the light. Flowers bloomed, melodies of birds filled the air, the rustling of leaves played in the passing breeze and you— you became my everything, my shining Sun.

You changed me.

You taught me so much that the winter I had thought was eternal, melted away, leaving behind a world of serenity, made just for us two.

It was like a dream.

An unforgettable memory.

It was all—

a short-lived fantasy.

Part I: Dawn

The ringing sound of an alarm echoes through the room, accompanied by the occasional honking and chatter from the nearby street outside my window.

The soft light of dawn, seeping through the curtains, is cast onto my sleeping face, waking me up from a dream— an escape from reality.

I opened my eyes, slowly sat myself up, and turned off my phone's alarm, still ringing on persistently.

As I sat on my bed, with a solemn expression, I stared blankly at a photo resting on my bedside table.

A photo of us.

Our moment captured, resistant to time’s decay.

Part II: Enigma

Before I could begin to reminisce, an alert tone rang from my phone, interrupting the still atmosphere.

A heavy sigh escapes my lips.

On its screen, a notification pops up, adding to the mountain of unread messages.

The message was from a mutual friend of ours, more specifically, your friend. It reads:

"Hey! It's been a while. We're rehearsing soon, and it'd be cool if you could swing by. No pressure though, we get it if you're busy. Just wanted to extend the invite. Hope you're doing well."

I stared at the message; no thoughts whatsoever crossed my mind.

I grabbed my phone from the bedside table, switched on silent mode, and flipped it over, laying it on its screen.

You were the one who introduced them to me, making them one of the few friends I had. However, I now question their loyalty.

As I sank into the bed, a question emerged in my head.

"How could they move on so quickly?"

It felt like it was just yesterday when you left, the final day before the Sun laid itself to rest.

The beginning of an eternity of grief.

Part III: Lament

Staring at the blank ceiling, I felt a foreign object roll down my cheek.

Tears.

A stream of tears trickled from my eyes, catching me off guard.

As I wipe them away, I glance out the window, a reminder of the once sunny days I spent with you, now as dark as a starless night.

For now, while time still feels frozen, a lingering thought, like a whisper in the wind, constantly echoes in the back of my mind:

“Why couldn’t God give us more time?”
