“You know the joke,” Dr. Allen Berting said.

“What’s that?” Dr. Frederick Stack asked.

“What do you call someone who graduates last in his class in med school?”

Stack looked perplexed for a moment. “What?”

“Doctor!”

They shared a laugh. They clinked glasses of cognac in Berting’s backyard with a fire pit blazing.

“I just think we’re edging closer to having a permanent fascist system.”

“I think the same. The government’s control over the healthcare system is completely evil. Even if they leave us private, the regulations and controls throttle us.”

‘These are facts. We’ve got to keep fighting them.”
