World of Ascension Introduction
Intro to the World of Ascension Series

In loving memory of my grandmother
Lois McPhail,
Who brought so much inspiration to my life.
Chapter 1:
The Lands of Ascension were founded back in 1564. Before the founding, the Humans and Elves were in turmoil. Wars between the Humans and Elves, which the dwarfs chose to stay out of the conflict, each of them wanting control over the world. At the end of 1563, the elves proved more powerful than the humans, and thus the elves regained control, the reason as to why they were more powerful was because of the ancient bloodline of the Ascension family. In early 1564, treaties were created, thus allowing each race to live in peace. The humans allied with the elves and founded the City of Ravar, which lies north of the Kingdom of Ascension.
Because the elves proved more powerful, they became the most prominent race over the humans. During that time, the Elder Council was formed. The Elder Council is made up of mages and high mages, who help keep order in the World of Ascension, as well as being loyal advisors to the throne. The elder council was led by King Theramus' brother Ormus.
In 1590, the Legion of Ascension was created, the Legion is made up of warriors, mages, snipers and other classes, all the races from all over Ascension. Over time, the Legion of Ascension became an unstoppable force, thus becoming the protectors of the World of Ascension. Since the Legions creation, it has grown into an unimaginable size.
In 1616, a human rebellion broke out, calling for the fall of the City of Ascension. The human army tried to stop the rebellion, but the rebellions magic was much stronger than theirs.
Queen Valerie Alpold, the Human Queen of Ravar, had sent word to the elven king, King Theramus, the king of Ascension.
Upon receiving word of the upcoming invasion, the elven king quickly prepared the Legion of Ascension.
Albeit a bloody battle, the rebellion did not get passed the first Gate to the kingdom and was unable to gain advantage. What remained of the rebellion, were soon thrown into prisons and the Elder Council were called in and the rebellion quickly went through rehabilitation. Thus, saving them from being executed.
Peace once again reigned over the World of Ascension for thousands of years.
Chapter 2:
On a quiet, peaceful morning, on June 14th, 2001. King Theramus and his wife, Queen Lalena, were out walking the garden's. Enjoying the warm cool breeze, that swept across Ascension, the land they lived in since the founding. During this time when Spring was slowly transitioning into Summer, the trees, the flowers were all sprawling with life. The mountains were a sight to behold, they raised skyward with snow upon their peaks, green grass covered the rest all the way down their bases.
The King and the Queen made their way to the Pavilion at the corner of the garden and sat down on the bench. Holding hands, talking about good times.
Damien, Malachi Shadowblade and Larin's son, came running with his father.
Damien turned around and froze Mal's feet to the ground.
“Damien! What did I tell you about using magic on your father?” Queen Lalena said.
“You told me it's forbidden. Me sorry, Me ‘me.” Damien replied.
“Unfreeze him, this instant!” Damien obediently did what he was told and ran over to the Queen and sat on her lap.
“Me sorry, Me ‘me, it won't happen again, I promise.” Damien lifted his hand up for a promise with the Queen.
Lalena happily accepted the promise and kissed him on the cheek.
“Run along now.” Lalena said.
Damien hurriedly ran to his father and gave him a hug.
Damien is not like any child; he will never age, and he will never grow up. Even the elders are baffled by the cause. He's nowhere related to the King and Queen, but he's been around them since the day he was born. Malachi's father, Zamir Shadowblade, is the General of the Legion of Ascension. One thing about elves is that they rarely have a rivalry between them, they've always treated each other like family. Although Damien isn't a relative, by any means, the King and Queen both consider him their grandson, Malachi and Larin their sons. Malachi's mother, Ariendal is the queen’s handmaiden.
A noise behind the pair, broke Lalena from her thoughts. Before they could turn around, they were hit with lightning bolts, that killed them instantly. And the mysterious intruder, vanished before he could be seen.
“Me ‘me! Papa!” Damien came running to the Pavilion and stopped at the stairs. He looked at what was left of the King and Queen and wept in his father's arms.
“Summon the guards and the prince!” Malachi yelled.
As the guards, Prince Atmose, and Ormus, the head of the Elder Council; came rushing towards them a few minutes later. Malachi was trying to comfort his son.
“I wish you didn't see that. Come let’s go find your father.”
Both Damien and Malachi departed after Malachi explained what he could of what happened.
The guards carefully picked up what was left of the King and Queen; placed them on a wagon that carried them away.
A half hour later, everybody assembled in the throne room, “What the hell happened?” Atmose yelled. “I want answers!”
“My lord, we are doing the best we can.” Ormus placed a hand on his nephew's shoulder and Atmose quickly regained his senses.
“My parents are dead! No speck of evidence on what could lead us to the assassin. Nothing!" Atmose continued to yell.
“Uncle Atmose!” Damien came running into the room and all but leaped on the prince’s lap. Damien embraced him and comforted him.
How Atmose longed to have a son, when he was five, the prince had an accident that made it so he could never have a child. Damien is the closest thing he could have for a child.
“Thank you, Damien, I love you so very much. It pains me to know you had to see that.” Atmose continued to hold him and pat his head. “You sure the mages couldn't track where the assassin may have gone? How could anybody slip in without being notice, even if it was done by magic, we have wards up for this.” Atmose continued.
“Sir. The wards were off for a few moments.” Ormus said.
“Then it's someone who knows the garden’s inside and out! Alerrian help us, everyone is a suspect!”
The following day, Prince Atmose received his uncle’s blessing and became King of Ascension. After the coronation ceremony, he sat back down on the throne.
“I never wanted this... Not like this. Who would want my parents dead and why?”
Ormus looked down at his nephew before he spoke, “Atmose, in time you will learn things happen for a reason. We will find your parents assassin and put an end to them. Whoever they are.”
Atmose intentionally blocked his uncles last words out, as his thoughts focused on his parents. He wasn’t ready for this, even though all his life he was educated and trained. He just never completed the final part. He was about to, until all this happened.
Even to this day, nobody could ever figure out who assassinated the King and Queen. Atmose secretly blames himself for the deaths of his parents. If only he could have been there, he could have stopped it before it happened.
Chapter 3:
“Gone? What do you mean, Daddy's gone?” Damien asked.
“We went to bed last night, and when I woke up, he was gone.” Malachi explained to his son.
“This is not like daddy at all.”
Zamir and Ariendal walked into the room. Their faces looking grim.
“There's no sign of him, son. I'm sorry, even the Legion can't find him. He was last seen in the Port of Ascension and that's where his trail ran cold.”
Malachi held his son, while his thoughts drifted about Larin. Why would he just leave?
Larin departed on a raft. After being out on the sea for days, his supplies ran out. He was sure he was going to right way. He looked for any sign of an island out in the misty water, until he spotted something. He then began to paddle his way through the sea until he found it. The Temple of Eramus named after the God Eramus whom was the God of Peace. After weeks of studying the temple, he now decided to set out and find it. Now, at last, he found it.
He allowed the raft to wash up onto the shoreline and the elf ran up to the temple. Placed his hand on the door and chanted the words he memorized to unlock it.
The door clicked and opened.
He made his way through the cavernous temple, rushing by many decades’ old rooms. The temple had seen better days. Long been abandoned and forgotten over time. But still connected to the Kingdom of Ascension.
He finally made it to the center chamber. Much like the Temple of Amorai, there was no ceiling, the only ceiling it had was the sky.
Larin peered upward and saw the ancient beacon still emitting it's light towards Castle Ascension which was hundreds of miles away. After regaining his senses, Larin kept walking towards the center of the room. A circular alter was standing alone, various Candelabras encircled the age-old table with a statue of the ancient God standing behind.
The elf took the memory crystal out of his pack and set it down on the floor next to the alter.
He quickly knelt in front of it and began to summon Eramis.
After he completed the summoning, a voice startled him. “You dare to defile MY temple with your presence?!” The God, Eramus, bellowed.
“My apologies, my lord. I came to seek atonement.”
“You think you can come to MY TEMPLE and believe you will receive what you seek? You’re not even worthy to stand in my presence.” The God laughed. Now the frightened elf wished he never came. For he's not going to receive what he came here for.
“I... I don't want to live like this anymore, live with what I've done. I’ve abandoned my lover and my son because I feel so ashamed.”
“As you should be,” Boomed the intimidating voice again, “Only you carry this burden, and you will pay the price.”
“What?... What price would that be?”
“DEATH!”
“Noooooo!”
Within a matter of seconds, a light beamed down from the heaven's upon Larin. Larin screamed loudly as the skin on his bones began to peel away and burn to a crisp. All that was left of Larin was a burned husk of his formal self.
Chapter 4:
The Temple of Amorai rests northwest of Castle Ascension. It once beamed power to the Castle, but since it was buried for a couple hundred years, it had somehow extinguished. The Elder Council have been hastily trying to fix it ever since time unburied it. The Temple of Amorai resides in the Valley of the Ancients. Stone cliffs surround much of the temple, and it's back faces out towards the Ascension Sea. Some people have asked why the temple is so big. History has said it's because Amorai, whom the temple is named after, is a God. The Goddess Amorai is the God of Truths.
Very few elves, hold the knowledge to ever summon a God successfully. It is said that only those who are chosen to wield the ability to do so.
It is said that the one who came through the mirror is the one responsible for the Temple coming out of the sands. Even though it was already unburied before Mark Dawnrider came to Ascension, no real facts have been presented.
Like the Temple of Amorai, all the temples in World of Ascension have mirror's and only one person knows how to activate them. The knowledge of mages past has long since disappeared. A lot of historians still, to this day, do not know how somewhere from another time and place could wield such knowledge and such power.
Maybe this stranger, will aide them into finding all their lost knowledge to the ages. Even though, there are some who remain skeptical, and believe they won't ever find what they are looking for.
Chapter 5:
Malachi found himself staring at the stranger, while he lay in the bed before him. Damien was sleeping next to him. After sensing a mirror activate, some of the members of the Elder Council went to Temple of Amorai and brought back an elf who was completely unconscious. Thank the Gods he was still alive though.
There was a knock on the door that jolted Malachi from his thoughts. He got up and walked to the door, opened it to find his mother standing on the other side, he stepped out and closed the door behind him to not awaken Damien.
“How is he?” Ariendal asked.
“Well, he's not going to die. This is normal for a mage to go through, when he used a lot of his power. Damien won't leave his side, and neither will I.”
His mother smiled, “I see that look in your eye.”
Malachi looked embarrassed, “What look?”
“Malachi, I've been your mother since the day you were born, and I know when a certain someone has caught your attention.”
Mal turned around so his mother couldn’t see his face.
“It’s nothing mother.”
“Oh, for Alerrian’s sake, you have NOT left that man's side since he's been here. You and Damien both won't allow the servants to take care of him. The only time you let anybody in that room is when the other mages need to give him healing. You have an interest in him.”
Ariendal's son turned to face her again, “Okay fine, I won't deny it, I have developed feelings for him, Damien has taken a liking to him too, it would be nice for him to have another father in his life, since Larin left.”
Ariendal took note of the pained look in her son's eyes at the mention of his late lover’s name.
“Mal, it's not your fault Larin abandoned you and Damien. Isn't it about time you stop blaming yourself? Larin has been gone for over five years now. You need someone in your life again.”
Malachi just stared down at the floor. “Maybe you're right.” He sighed and looked up at his mother again. “What if this man doesn't want anybody. Sometimes I can hear him call someone else’s name. Reslan, I believe it is."
“Well, I don't know who this Reslan is, so he must be someone he knew from where he came from.”
“When he's finally awake I'm sure we will have a lot to talk about. I know King Atmose will want to be present.” Her son conceded.
“Of course, he will. It's not every day we have someone come through one of the mirrors in our temples.” The older elf contemplated something, “Hmm, I wonder.”
“No mother, absolutely not!”
“What? You don't even know what my idea is yet.”
Malachi obediently followed his mother back into the room. Damien was awake and watching intently, with a smile from ear to ear on his face. The boy was too smart for his own good. Makes Malachi wonder if these two conspired together.
“Sit down, Mal.”
Her son did what he was told and said to Damien, “Not one word, Damien.”
Damien continued to smile as Malachi’s mother placed his hand in the stranger’s right hand. A few moments passed and Malachi could feel the other man’s grip. He wanted to let go, but something kept him from doing so.
“There now, I suspected as much.”
Malachi, still confused about the situation, said, “Why is he gripping my hand so tightly?”
Ariendal answered, “I did not raise my son to be daft. Open your eyes! I can see the look in your eyes, you have stronger feelings then you thought you possessed for him.”
Mal started feeling uncomfortable, “It doesn't feel right though. He's lying there helpless, trying to recover, I just feel like I'm taking advantage of him.”
“Does this look like you're taking advantage of him? He's the one that's gripping your hand like that, not the other way around.” Mal's mother looked like she was about to smack him for being so stubborn.
“Why do you have to be right?”
“Because I did the same thing to your father.”
With that said, she strolled out of the room with a big smile on her face.
“Why does she have to win all the time?”
Damien replies, “Because she's Nana.”
“Son, you're not helping.”
His son laughed and said, “I may not be helping you, but I'm on Nana's side in this.”
Mal looked down at the adjoined hands, “Well that explains a lot.”
“Love you, daddy.”
“I love you too, son.” And did he ever. That boy reminds him every day. Since Larin left, Damien's been really the only person that helped keep his spirits up, others did also, just not as much as his son did.
Malachi looked at the stranger’s face and saw tears flowing out of his eyes.
“Daddy he's starting to wake up.”
The man's eyes began opening slowly. Mal almost forgot about their hands still locked together, but he couldn't let go, the other elf's grip was too strong. The man eyes fully opened and looked at Malachi and Damien wiped the tears off his face.
“Oh, you're such a sweet boy. By the way, your mother is a smart woman.”
Shocked by the elf's words, he asked, "Why do you say that?"
The other elf cleared his throat and raised both of their joined hands.
“Oh right.” Malachi tried so hard to hide his embarrassment, but he failed to do so. And the stranger laughed.
“I am Mark Dawnrider and who might you be?" I looked at Damien when he asked the question.
“Me Damien and this is my father Malachi Shadowblade.”
“Well, it's a pleasure meeting you both. I certainly appreciate you both taking care of me, I must be a burden.’
“No, of course not. This is what elves do right?”
I replied, "Yes they do. And I was awake the entire time your mother was in here."
With that pronouncement, Malachi about ran out of the room until he remembered he was still holding my hand.
I laughed at Mal's embarrassment.
“Sorry daddy, I already knew he was awake, and I just told him to play along with Nana. I really didn't know what she had in mind.”
“It's alright, I did though.” I chimed in.
“How did you… ”
I cut him off by squeezing his hand, I will explain everything, when I'm finally out of this bed and room. I need some fresh air… and apparently my robe.” Now it was my turn to be embarrassed.
Damien giggled as his father got up to help me out of bed, next thing he knew they were embracing. Embarrassed yet again, he slowly let go of me and walked to the door and opened it. Damien guided us to the balcony, not too far from the bedroom.
As soon as we were outside, Mal asked his son to summon his Uncle Atmose and let him know I was awake. Damien hurried to find his uncle. Maybe a bit overly excited on the task that he was given, but Malachi only smiled after his son.
“The last thing I remember was walking through the mirror and was able to get to one of the rooms and lay my bedroll down, as soon as I laid down; I was out.” I began.
Malachi inquired, “You must've had a long journey, I know not what's on the other side of the mirrors, but I'm sure there are other worlds connected. A lot of our history has been lost over the ages, including the ones regarding the mirrors.”
“I'm sorry to hear that. There is so much I'd like to learn.”
“You mean you plan on staying?” Mal asked.
I replied, “Malachi I cannot return to where I came from.”
Malachi felt the pain in my voice, and he felt both relieved and pained at the same time.
"Why can you not return?"
I stayed quiet and just looked at the sky.
“My apologies, I didn't mean to offend.”
“No, you didn't. When your King arrives, I will explain everything then.”
As soon as I finished speaking, King Atmose came out onto the balcony with Damien in tow.
“Ah, you must be Mark Dawnrider, welcome to Castle Ascension.” The king greeted me with a smile.
“And you must be King Atmose, it's a pleasure to meet you.” I said shaking his hand.
“Pleasure is mine. Please, let’s all have a seat."
The servants brought out the evening meal along with drinks while I told my story.
A couple hours later, I was finished.
“Oddly enough, I have heard about Telas, I'm not all too surprised."
I nodded and looked at Malachi. Now it seems, he regrets asking.
“And this Reslan I was speaking of while I slept, was my lover. He died 70 years ago. There's nothing left for me there, my clan has moved on and I haven't heard from them since I was in the Inquisition."
Mal stood up from where he was standing and walked to the other side of the balcony.
"If you would excuse me a moment."
"By all means." The Elven King said with a smile.
I walked over to where Malachi was standing.
“I'm so sorry Mark, I feel so foolish for asking such a thing.”
“Mal, look at me. It's alright. Yes, I'm still in pain over his loss. I regret not ever visiting his grave. I just... couldn't.”
“Mark…”
“No... don't.”
Mal ended up telling him anyway, “You're not the only one with regrets here. Over 5 years ago, I lost my lover as well. He abandoned Damien and me. He disappeared, no one knows where he went or knows what happened to him.”
“I'm sorry, it sounds like we both need closure, for both of our losses.”
The dark-haired elf nodded and hesitated, then said, “I don't think I want to know what happened to Larin.”
I could see a mix of emotions, anger, and pain in the other elf, “Come, we will talk about this some more later.”
Malachi and Damien decided to go home, I opted to continue staying in the Castle on Atmose's invitation. Damien opened a portal and both father and son stepped into it. After the portal closed, I sat down in the common room of the castle. Thinking. Thinking about Telas and Reslan.
Chapter 6:
The whispers in my head become louder, telling me to return to Telas. Lying in bed, I began to have a vision. Where I was standing in a small cove, with trees surrounding a lonely grave, a waterfall in the back with its water flowing down into a pool.
I can see myself, kneeling in front of the grave. I began to inch closer to the headstone, leaning over to read the name etched in stone:
Reslan Taven
Pain wretched my chest and tears streamed down his face. I didn't realize I called Reslan's name until Malachi and Damien came rushing into my room.
“Mark, what's wrong?” Malachi asked.
“I saw... I saw Reslan's grave.” Malachi sat on the bed next to me and held me in his arms.
The dark-haired elf comforted me and said, “It will be okay, I promise.”
“I need to go back.”
“I can go...”
“No! I must do this alone.”
Without giving Malachi time to speak, I was already out of the room and gone.
“Daddy follow him, he can't be alone.”
By the time Malachi Shadowblade caught up with me, I was already entering the Temple of Amorai. After I disappeared into the Temple, Mal ran to the doors, as he entered, he watched as I thrust my right hand towards the mirror, and it came to life.
I walked through the activated mirror and Malachi wasn't too far behind. The dark-haired elf passed through the mirror, Mal felt himself rush forward, high winds pushing back at him, colors swirled around him, and he was unable to see his own body. After what seemed like minutes, he flew out of the other side of another mirror.
Malachi shook off the disoriented feeling and stood up and when he looked around, he saw that he was in another temple, unlike any on Ascension, these were different; archways with globes in the center of them. More mirrors, some broken, some still intact.
A moment later he heard another mirror come to life and quickly spotted me going through it, he ran as fast as he could, not wanting the mirror to deactivate before he got to it. With relief, he was still able to step through. When he finally made it to the other side, he stood in a grove, a faint glow of the night sky circled above him. After his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he spotted me, kneeling before a grave.
“Reslan, I’m so sorry I didn’t come sooner. I was afraid, I didn’t feel like I was ready for this yet. I love you. Miss you so much. I left this world because I could no longer deal with it anymore. You’re gone and so are the others.”
A spirit materialized beside me; it was Reslan.
“Mark, do you have any idea how hard it was for me to leave you? It was my biggest regret I have made in my life.” I got to my feet.
Reslan reached for me and placed a finger on my mouth to quiet me and he looked into my eyes and watched the tears fall.
“You were the best thing that ever happened to me, when I told you I believed in you, I meant it, I meant every word. Not only that, I loved you more than anything else in this world. I couldn’t look at another man again after I left you; I couldn’t. You taught me how to be a true leader, I turned my homeland around because of you. You taught me to believe in myself as you believed in yourself. I love you Mark Dawnrider, always have and always will.”
“And I love you Reslan. How do I move on and let go?” I asked.
“I believe you already have. The only thing you were seeking here was closure?”
“How do you know that?
Reslan’s gaze moved to the other elf standing behind me. “Because of the man standing behind you.
Surprised, I turned around and saw Malachi, “Malachi, I told you I need to do this alone.”
That’s when Reslan spoke, “No! If you did this alone, you would have turned around as soon as you got here.”
“Damn it Reslan, must you know me so well?” I all but spat out the words.
“Okay Alexandria.” Reslan said with a smile.
“You’re lucky you’re dead, otherwise I’d kill you.”
“Funny I’ve said the same thing, just not the exact words, after you drank from the Well of Sadness.”
I smiled at the memory, “Reslan, damn you, you’ve always known how to put a smile on my face.”
“Ah, must be my charm.” And there it was, that grin that always caught me off guard.
Malachi came up behind me and wrapped his arms around me.
“It’s time for me to go, I love you Mark Dawnrider.”
The tears came again, “And I love you Reslan, do say hello to the others for me and I miss them.”
Reslan smiled, “Of course, mi amor.” Turning to Malachi he said, “Take care of Mark for me Malachi.” Reslan leaned over and kissed me one last time on my cheek.
“I will Reslan, I promise you.” Malachi said and with that, Reslan disappeared.
“Ready to go home?”
I replied, “Not just yet, there's a place I want to show you.”
“Really?” Malachi said with a smirk.
I pulled Malachi through the mirror with me, and we were at the Crossroads again.
“Before we go on, this is what's called the Crossroads. It's an ancient Elven temple that is home to many mirrors which connect to others around Telas.”
“And Ascension?”
“Including Ascension and probably others.”
I guided Malachi to a mirror that was backed against a large square pillar, and I thrust my right hand towards the mirror to bring it to life.
“After you.” I said.
Malachi stepped through and within an instant he was tossed into a room. I wasn't too far behind, I stepped in front of Malachi and took his hand, walked out the door and into a Garden.
“Malachi, welcome to Skybreach! This used to be my home when I was leading the Inquisition.”
The dark-haired elf was shocked, “Mark, it's beautiful.”
“It wasn't when we first got here. Oh, one more thing. Damien what do you think?”
Out of nowhere, Malachi heard his son's laugh, “I agree with daddy.”
I smiled. Malachi looked at me confused, “Damien, your father is giving me a confusing look. Anything you want to tell him?”
“Daddy have you not been paying attention? Remember when Mark said he drank from the Well of Sorrows? Well, he has voices in his head that tells him everything, that's how he figured out I've been watching you both this entire time.”
Malachi smacked his forehead, feeling embarrassed.
“Don't do that Mal, it's alright. Come, I want to show you the rest of the keep.”
Mal followed me to the door on the other side of the garden, that led into the main hall of the keep. I showed him my throne, the war room, and my personal quarters.
I began to feel homesick, and I told my companion I was ready to go, I can't be here anymore.
Mal understood and we both made our way back to Ascension.
“I'm sorry, we shouldn't have stayed that long. It brings back a lot of memories. Just being on Telas brings back memories, it was my home. From now on, I won't be returning. I want to start a new life... with you in it, Malachi."
The dark-haired elf felt like he was just hit in the chest, wavered a little but quickly regained his balance.
“I don't know what to say.”
“Just say yes.”
“I... I can't.”
Then I realized, Malachi still hasn't let go of Larin.
I kept his promise that I will not be returning to Telas. Starting a new life won't be easy, but I had people who accepted me and will help guide me if need be.
Chapter 7:
Malachi and I were sitting on the balcony at Castle Ascension. My companion was telling me about some of the history he knew of the World of Ascension.
When he finally started talking about the other temples, one stood out in my mind, that he never mentioned. I closed my eyes and could hear whispers in my head.
“Mal, my apologies for interrupting.”
“No, it's alright, go ahead.”
“Do you know of the Temple of Eramus?”
The dark-haired elf looked at me in surprise.
“I'm being told to go there.”
At this point, my companion had a confused look on his face.
“I've never heard of that one, let me go get the King.” He said.
Moments later, Malachi returned with King Atmose, “The Temple of Eramus you mentioned? That was built for the Elven God of Peace, long before I was born. Not much is known of that place anymore. I don't even know if it's on any of our maps."
“Uncle Atmose!” Damien came running out on the balcony and stood next to his uncle.
“What is it, nephew.”
“No need for maps I can take you there.”
Malachi looked down at his son, puzzled, “Son, how did you know about that?”
“Daddy, I seen it in visions.”
“As you probably figured it out by now, Mark. My nephew is quite the little mage. His IQ is 300, the highest of most of the mages on the council and most elves.”
Damien smiled at me.
I laughed, “And he's quite the charmer too.”
“That he is. Damien's the best thing that ever happened to me.”
“I can tell, he's been very helpful to us so far.”
“I am going to tag along with you three, I have never been to the Temple of Eramus and would love to see it with my own eyes.” Atmose said.
Damien didn't hesitate, he began to chant in a whisper as a portal opened. And what appeared in the portal was the temple.
One by one, we all went through the portal. When I stepped out onto the island where it resided. I was stunned by its beauty. Although time has been a bit harsh to the structure, it still holds its charisma. I could feel the magic radiating from within and the next thing I knew I was walking up the stone path to the door.
“Hmm. This door has a strange lock on it.” Then the whispers came to me, instructing me on how to open it, I placed my hand on the door and chanted the spell.
The doors opened into a hallway that appeared to go on forever, as we walked down the corridor, we finally made it to the end, which opened to a ceiling-less room much like the Temple of Amorai.
I looked up and noticed the light beaming outward.
“How is it this light still working but the one at Amorai is not? Curious.”
I walked to the center of the room where the alter stood. I noticed a small crystal sitting on the floor. “What's this?”
Damien identified it quickly, “That's a Memory Crystal. By the God's, that's daddy Larin's crystal!”
So, this is where Larin came? But what for?”
Damien, can you activate this?”
“Yes, I made it for daddy.” Damien chanted a few words, and the crystal came to life.
Something materialized above it and when it became clear, it was Larin, “Daddy!”
“Hi baby boy. I just wanted to let you know I love you and your father very much, I'm sorry for what I did. Please find it in your heart to forgive me.”
I felt Malachi slipping to the floor, Atmose and I grabbed him before he did. “Take him outside."
“NO! I need to see this.”
Now it showed Larin kneeling in front of the alter and I noticed he was chanting.
“Why is he summoning Eramus?”
Another voice spoke through the crystal:
“You dare to defile MY temple with your presence?!” The booming voice bellowed.
“My apologies, my lord. I came to seek atonement.”
“You think you can come to MY TEMPLE and believe you will receive what you seek?” The God laughed.
“I... I don't want to live like this anymore, live with what I've done. I've abandoned my lover and my son… I feel so ashamed of what I did.”
“As you should be,” Boomed the intimidating voice again, “Only you carry this burden, and you will pay the price.”
“What?... What price?”
“DEATH!”
“Noooooo!”
The crystal went dark after the beam of light encased Larin.
“Daddy! No!” Damien held his chest and I pulled him into my arms.
“Damien, I'm so sorry.” I looked at Malachi and his face paled, tears began to spill.
“Malachi, Larin is dead.” I said.
“So that explains who those bones belong to.” Atmose pointed in front of the alter.
Atmose continued to hold Malachi, while he sobbed in his arms while calling out to Larin as if he could still hear him.
After a couple of moments, I looked up and saw a spirit coming down from the heavens.
“Larin?” Malachi could not believe it.
“Yes Mal, it is I. Damien my sweet boy, how I missed you.”
I let go of Damien and the boy walked up to his other father.
“Daddy, I missed you too. Why did you abandon us?"
“That wasn't my intention, nothing was my intention. Please find it in your hearts to forgive me. Atmose, I'm sorry about your parents. I didn't know what else to do, after your parents were killed, I felt so ashamed and left."
“But why daddy? What did you do that was so bad?”
“There is another memory in that crystal, it will unlock itself when the time comes. And when that time comes, please forgive me. I love you both so very much. It wasn't supposed to be this way.”
Damien continued to sob and Larin reached out to touch his son's face one final time.
“It will be alright baby boy, please take care of your father, he was always the best of both of us.”
Damien smiled and said, “I will daddy, me promise.”
“Malachi, take care of our son. I love you so very much.” Larin reached for Malachi and the dark-haired elf stepped forward, Larin placed his hand on his heart and said, "As long as you keep me here, I will always be close by.”
Malachi reached out to caress his formal lover’s cheek, which felt cold to the touch.
“And I will always love you, Larin.”
Larin smiled at his love. Then he turned to Atmose.
“Atmose, I've always looked up to you like a brother I never had, whenever I needed guidance, you were always there. I will never forget you.”
“And I won't ever forget you, Larin. Our feelings for each other were always mutual. I will keep you in a special place in my heart.”
Larin smiled at Atmose, before turning to me.
“Mark, thank you for bringing my family here, I can finally rest now, please take care of them. Where I failed, I know you will succeed. And remember, do not judge people to harshly for their actions, because they're not always responsible.”
“I will do what you ask, Larin. They already mean more to me than they already know.”
“I know, I have watched from the spirit world and seen how happy my family is with you. And because of that, I consider you my family as well. You have always overcome your own hardships, there are still more yet to come. I bid you all farewell for now. Please take care of yourselves.”
“We will daddy.” Larin leaned over and gave Damien a kiss on the cheek.
“Until next we meet baby boy. I still have to get you back for hitting me with that firebolt."
The boy elf giggled. Larin smiled and began ascending back into the sky until he was out of sight.
After everybody regained their senses, Atmose spoke breaking everyone from their skyward gaze, “I suppose we better head back to the castle. I will have the mages come get Larin's body for a proper burial."
“Not just yet.” Malachi chimed in. He walked over to me, pulled me into his arms and began to kiss me.
Atmose smiled down at Damien, “Looks like you won this bet.”
Damien laughed as his uncle gave him the fifty gold pieces.
For a few moments, Malachi and myself were lost in the kiss, then we heard Damien laughing, we turned our heads to the other two as Atmose handed the child gold.
Malachi blurted, “Did you two just place a bet on us?”
“Of course, we did daddy, we made a bet before we walked into the portal to get here. Uncle didn't think it was going to happen until later, and I said no it's going to happen at the temple. And he said, “Okay I bet you fifty gold pieces and we shook on it.”
Malachi looked back at me, “Now I know where Damien gets his sneakiness from.”
We both laughed and looked back at Atmose. The King raised his hands in front of him as if surrendering, not even bothering to hide the grin on his face.
Damien picked up the memory crystal and opened the portal back to the Castle.
By the time Malachi and I were back. Atmose was already speaking to the mages. They complied and went through the portal.
A wagon arrived and parked in front of them, moments later, the mages were back with the remains of Larin.
I walked up the stairs with Malachi to the Castle as the wagon was pulling away.
My companion was still hanging onto me as we reached the balcony.
We both looked out over the kingdom. “Are you going to be okay, Mal?”
“Yes, I believe so now. Now that Larin is finally home, he'll have burial he deserves.”
“I'm sorry it worked out this way.”
“It's not your fault. Things happen for a reason.”
“Yes, they do.” I replied with a nod, “I'm here, so there must be a reason for that.”
“Well, I'd say you've already shown that reason this afternoon.” Mal paused. “Thanks Mark, I couldn't have done this without you.”
Mal pulled me into his arms again and kissed me. There couldn't be a more perfect time for this. The sun was already setting on the horizon. Could already hear the crickets chirping in the grass. The evening was perfect.
Then we heard a sly little boy begin to giggle.
Malachi said to me under his breath, “Just ignore him, maybe he'll go away.”
“Not a chance, daddy!” Damien laughed some more.
“Oh, for the love of elven ears!” I couldn't help myself; I began to laugh so hard my chest started hurting.
Malachi started chasing after Damien across the balcony and into the castle; I followed them inside. Still trying to catch my breath.
Chapter 8:
Malachi and I sat in front of the fireplace on the main level of the castle. Enjoying the quiet halls as the servants finally went back to the servant’s quarters to get some needed rest.
I was reading a book I found in the castle’s library that was filled with some history of Ascension. When I realized something, I haven't known yet.
“Malachi?”
My companion looked up after me questioningly, “Yes love?”
By the God's, I'm still getting used to that. It's been so long.
“You never told me how Damien came about.”
Mal put down the newspaper he was reading, stood up and sat down on the couch with me.
He looked at me for a moment then he spoke, “When I first became of age, I was seeing a woman. We thought we were in love. Sarren was a beautiful elf woman, I give her that, but we never really loved each other. When Damien was conceived, it shocked me. I was still young, just barely turned eighteen. I'm surprised my parents took the news well. The reason why it shocked me when Sarren became pregnant, is because she wasn't supposed to. We were both scared, we didn't tell our parents about it until she was six months along. The priests were surprised that she made it that far into the pregnancy. Later when she was giving birth, I was scared. I knew I was going to lose Sarren, but I was also afraid I was going to lose Damien too. And yet, Damien survived, but his mother died shortly after giving birth. I blamed myself for weeks afterwards until her parents came to see me. I honestly thought her father was going to kill me. He walked up to me, stopped dead in front of me. Looked me in the eyes and said: Son, we don't blame you for Sarren’s death. Sometimes a mother does die after childbirth or even during, it's just the way things are. Please don't blame yourself, feel blessed you have a beautiful child.”
“Wow, normally us elves can easily forgive, but when it comes to death it depends on the situation.” I replied.
“Yes. That is true. And you know this happened over 200 years ago.”
“Then how is Damien still a child?” I asked.
“He may be a child as he appears. He's technically an adult because of how old he is. He has a rare elven disease that even our own priests and priestess can't even begin to figure out. It's extremely rare. I honestly love that boy no matter what. He's my son and he came from me. That will never change. And he loved Larin the moment he first met him, just like he did you. When Damien and I are ready we will unlock some of the memory crystal's that we have put away for now. I just think it's too soon to bring them out right now.”
“I agree. You and Damien just buried him. The feeling of loss is still raw in both of you. Let yourselves heal.” As I spoke the words, I looked at Mal and saw the pain in his eyes.
Malachi sighed heavily before speaking again, “You're right. I'm actually afraid of what might be locked away in that crystal, I have a feeling I may not like it.” Mal drew me closer and held me for a bit. “It makes me happy you're here, Damien loves you, it just seems like everything is back to where it should be, even though you're a completely different person. It's just one more thing that won't ever be right again."
“And what is that?”
Malachi pointed to a painting on the wall. “That's Atmose's parents, King Theramus and Queen Lalena. They were like grandparents to Damien, he always called them Meme and Papa. They were assassinated in the garden's, back in June of 01. Three weeks after they were assassinated, Larin disappeared. He was close to them. Damien has seen more than his fair share of deaths in his lifetime."
“Wait. That can't be coincidence. Did you all ever find out who murdered them?”
“No, to this day it's been unsolved, but people are still trying to figure out who did it.” Malachi explained.
“I remember what Larin told me before leaving: Don't not judge people too harshly for their actions, because they're not always responsible.”
My companion’s eyes grew wider, “What does that mean?” He asked.
“I have no idea, but I do intend on finding out. Atmose's parents were assassinated, three weeks later he disappears. He seemed guilty of something, but it's too late to worry about this now. Let's go home and get some sleep."
Chapter 9:
It was five in the morning when I woke up the next day and decided to get to work on figuring out the mystery behind the deaths of the king and queen. After I finished getting ready for the day, I headed for the gardens.
Atmose greeted me with his usual demeanor when I arrived.
“Morning, Mr. Dawnrider. Pleasant time for a morning stroll in the gardens.” He said to me.
“I'm not just here for a stroll, my King.” I replied.
“Oh?”
“Can you tell me what you know about your parents' deaths?” I asked, cordially.
“Absolutely, any help in this matter would be appreciated. I was in the Castle study when the mages summoned me, urgently, out to the gardens. I didn't know what to expect, when I finally arrived, all I saw were my parent’s remains. I was told that the wards in the gardens were briefly deactivated.”
“Yes, and only a mage in the Elder Council could do that.”
Atmose nodded.
I continued, “I was speaking with Malachi the previous night. And the topic came up just before we decided to turn in for the night. What made me wonder was the timing between the King and Queens deaths and Larin's disappearance.”
Atmose looked at me and rubbed his chin, lost in thought, “I never thought about that.”
“And Larin's words when we were at the Temple of Eramus, got me thinking. He said: Don't judge people to harshly for their actions because they're not always responsible. But he still felt guilty. I really don't believe it has to do with him abandoning Malachi and Damien. That's only part of it. It leaves us with more questions, then answers. But I do believe that Larin killed your parents.”
“What? Why would he do such a thing?” The King asked, earnestly.
“I have no idea, but I have a sneaky suspicion, that he's not fully responsible.”
Atmose nodded, waited for me to continue.
“He couldn't have done it alone, he may have been a victim, also a pawn for who is truly responsible.”
“That does seem like a logical theory, Larin wouldn't have done something like this alone or done it on his own accord. He had a big heart and loved everybody. Wait? Are you suggesting mind control?”
I looked at the other elf curiously, “I don't want to rule that out.”
Just as I finished that statement a shadowy figure appeared behind me.
“Mark behind you!” Atmose leaped at me, and we went crashing to the ground, just before the attacker hit me with a bolt of electricity. As quickly as the attacker appeared, he vanished.
“Thanks, Atmose, I wasn't expecting that.” I looked over at one of the wards and it activated again.
Atmose noticed it to, "What is going on?”
Just as Atmose finished the thought, Damien came rushing towards us with Malachi in tow.
“Mark! Uncle! The crystal it's fully activated!” Damien said excitedly.
Mal, came rushing towards me and put his arms around me.
“Are you alright?” He asked, frantically.
“Yes, I'm fine, Atmose saved me.”
“Thank you, my king.”
“Ah, it was nothing. Now let's see what this other memory is about, shall we?”
Damien placed the memory crystal on the ground, and it flared to life.
Once again, Larin appeared above it.
“Malachi. Atmose. This is the part that's difficult to say, but it needs to be said and shown to you. I'm sorry Atmose, I... killed your parents.”
Atmose just stared blankly at the image while Malachi and Damien looked horrified as tears came running down their faces.
“But... it wasn't my doing, at least, I wasn't alone. I was put up to this and manipulated. If I didn't carry out his wishes, he would have killed Malachi and my sweet boy.”
Damien ran over to Malachi and put his arms around him and held onto his father.
“Atmose, your Uncle Ormus is the one who set this all up, nobody else was involved. He manipulated me to make sure I did what I was told.”
Atmose said to no one in particular, “Manipulation.”
Larin continued, “He didn't know I was recording this.”
The image changed and showed Ormus and Larin face to face with each other, “You will carry this out or you will never see your precious family again.”
Larin appeared to be frozen, just staring at Ormus as he gave the order. “Yes sir.”
“Tomorrow morning, the King and Queen are expected to take their morning walk in the gardens, I will deactivate the wards so you may carry this out... undetected.”
And then Ormus walked away. The image of Larin stood, once again, alone above the Crystal.
“I'm truly sorry. It wasn't supposed to be this way.” Then Larin's image disappeared.
Damien was still clinging to his father's side, while Malachi just stood there staring at the empty air.
“Ormus, will pay for what he did. Guards! Arrest my uncle at..." Before he could finish the statement, the wards deactivated again.
And Ormus appeared, “So now you know, that sneaky bastard Larin, I should have destroyed that crystal when I had the chance.”
“Ormus! You are no longer family, and you are no longer the leader of the Elder Council, you are ordered to stand down and be taken into custody!” Atmose yelled.
Ormus ran for Atmose, backhanded him, and sent him flying into a flower bed.
Damien reeled on their attacker, "You killed Me ‘me and Papa, you threatened to kill me and my father!"
Malachi motioned me to step back.
Without warning, Damien cast a massive firebolt at Ormus, it hit it's mark right on Ormus' chest and sent the unsuspecting elf flying backwards onto a bench and crushing it.
“You're the one who's going to die, Ormus!” Damien spoke the final word as if poison was dripping from his mouth.
Malachi grabbed me and pulled me to a nearby building.
“We need to stay out of the way, Damien trained himself how to fight."
“But we can't leave him out...”
Mal put his hand over my mouth.
“He'll be fine, trust me."
Still dazed from the attack, Ormus rose to his feet, rage boiling from within, never expected to be hit by a “child”.
Ormus tossed bolts of electricity towards Damien, and the boy quickly leaped out of the way, turning back he fired an ice bolt back at his former Uncle. Ormus stepped to the side, but the ice bolt grazed his left ear, tearing the pointed tip off. Blood started gushing from his wound, he reeled back with his own attack calling down a hail of fireballs from the sky.
Damien quickly activated his elemental shield as the fireballs hit the top of the shield and rolled down the sides.
“One last time, Ormus! Stand down!”
“I will never yield to you! You will die you pointy eared little brat!"
“So be it!”
The boy conjured up another spell, this time summoning fire and ice elementals.
Ormus looked at the sight in surprise.
“This is your end!”
All the elementals including Damien launched a series of attacks on Ormus that he couldn't avoid.
“No!”
His screams died, as he was reduced to ash and frozen bone. Damien chanted another spell and all the elementals disappeared.
Malachi and I ran towards Damien, Atmose finally regained consciousness.
“What happened, where is Ormus?” Damien pointed to the remains on the stone patch.
Malachi blurted, “Your nephew is a hero, brother.”
“Is that so?” Atmose walked over to Damien and pulled him into his arms. “Nephew, I had no idea you knew how to fight.”
Damien smiled, “I trained myself, Uncle!” The boy said, excitedly.
“Of course, you did, and you did a fine job. It's sad that it had to come to this, but what's done is done.” Atmose waved the guards over and sent them to get the mages. “Well, now there's no longer a leader of the Elder Council.” Atmose looked at me as he said that.
“Are you asking me something, my King?" I asked, confusingly.
Atmose replied with a smile, “Yes I am. Mark you have been so helpful to us since you've been here. You have brought happiness back to the family. I would be honored if you became the new leader to the Elder Council."
All I could say was, “I don't know what to say.” I looked over to Malachi and he nodded to me. And I looked down at Damien, “Yes, Atmose, I would be honored.”
“Wonderful, I will organize the ceremony at once.”
The wagon finally arrived to pick up Ormus' remains.
“This is also cause for a celebration, Damien and Mark you both are hereby bestowed the title Heroes of Ascension!” Atmose proclaimed.
Damien looked up at his Uncle Atmose in shock, “But Uncle, I just did what needed to be done, given the circumstances.”
“And you handled yourself valiantly! Come, we have much to prepare for.”
Malachi stopped everybody for a moment, "One moment, brother, there is something I want to ask Mark."
Damien and Atmose smiled at each other.
“I sure hope you both didn't bet on this.”
The pair both shook their heads.
“I learned my lesson the first time.” Atmose said, while Damien giggled.
“Mal, I don't know what you have in mind, but can it wait?” I asked.
The dark-haired elf just shook his head, Malachi got down on one knee and held my hand.
My face turned a shade of red, I knew where this was going.
“Mark Dawnrider, I love you with all my being, since you came here you've helped us with the impossible. When you were lying in bed, I tried to deny my feelings, I didn't want to believe them, especially after all I've been through in my past. Before you came, I thought I'd never find someone again; thought I'd live a lonely elf without a lover by my side. And then you came and then that's when I started becoming whole again. Damien loves you. Our King loves you. Even the entire kingdom looks up to you with great respect. I was hoping that you would do the honor of becoming my husband."
“I... umm.” I looked at Damien, he had a pleading look in his eyes, then I turned my gaze to Atmose, who only smiled back.
No one has ever asked for my hand in marriage before, not even Reslan, I suppose it wouldn't hurt, considering I've grown to love this man since I've been here.
Then I finally spoke, “I also share the same feelings, I love your son, love our King, and love the kingdom you all represent, and I will be representing.” With that said, I looked down at Malachi, “I love you, Malachi. And yes, I would love to be your husband.”
Malachi stood up and took me into his arms and kissed me. Damien ran to my side and wrapped his small arms around my waist, Atmose came to the opposite side and put his arms around Malachi and me.
Atmose whispered to us both, "You know how much this wedding is going to cost me right?"
We all laughed, and Malachi looked at the king and said, “Absolutely nothing.”
“You have a point. Come let’s get a move on.”
Damien opened a portal to the Castle, and we all followed each other through.
Chapter 10:
I woke up about ten in the morning the following day, the celebrations that occurred the night before were so great and wonderful. The sculptors surprised Damien and I, with our very own statues, which now reside in the Hall of Heroes. It’s hard to believe I’ve only been here for less than a year and I’ve done so much, it’s not something I really expected. Although, I couldn’t be anymore happier than I am now.
I rolled over towards the man I was about to marry, I found myself just staring at him. Hardly believing how happy I am to have a man like this in my life after so long. I deserve this. I thought to myself. I smiled while my gaze, still transfixed on this beautiful elf.
I was just breaking from my thoughts when an excited child came running into the room. Damien jumped on me, causing the bed to shake; woke his father up. Malachi pulled his son off me and began to tickle his stomach, Damien laughed loudly, while his father smiled at him.
“Daddy’s you both need to get up, we have to plan the wedding.”
Daddy’s? Did he just call me dad? I looked at Damien, blankly, all he did was look up at me and smiled, knowing full well what I was thinking.
“We’re up, we’re up, child.” Malachi laughed and Damien scurried excitedly out of the room.
Malachi and I got up out of bed and got ready for the day.
After we finished, we walked out into the living room and found Malachi’s mother sitting on the love seat. Ariendal, looked up as we entered the room. She wore a blue, crimson gown of extravagant gems flowing from her neck to her wrists and her waist. She had her hair pulled back up in a twist, with hair bangs hanging down on either side of her face. Her necklace was stunning and vibrant, it presented itself as a female elf with glistening wings with jeweled tips. She wore high heels that bore a darker but beautiful shade of blue. Damien was sitting in his Nana’s lap watching us.
She greeted us with her usual cordial lady like finesse, “Oh, my boys. I’m so happy for you both. I’m so excited for the day. Malachi your father will be joining us later for lunch, his duties are keeping him for a time.”
Her son nodded as he walked over to his mother and planted a kiss on each cheek.
“Mother you are looking for quite stunning today.”
“Thank you, my dear.” Ariendal stroked her son’s cheek. “It makes me so happy to see you finally happy after all this time. Mark, I can’t thank you enough.”
“Your son has done the same since I arrived here. Our feelings are mutual.” I smiled back at Mal’s mother.
Ariendal beamed at me, “Even though you both aren’t married yet, I still consider you, my son.”
“Thanks, Ariendal, that means so much to me.”
“Do not address me as Ariendal, my dear, you may call me mom.” Ariendal shot back.
I smiled, “Okay, mom.”
The woman laughed, almost knocking Damien off her lap.
“Alright, enough of this foolishness, we have wedding to plan!”
We arrived at the castle and found Atmose sitting with the wedding planner in the study. The king greeted us and invited us to take a seat, one of the servants brought in some Sky Root Tea. Damien sat between Malachi and I on the loveseat. Atmose took his place at the desk and the wedding planner sat across from us. Ariendal stood next to Atmose.
As we talked about everything we wanted, Atmose was taking notes as well.
The servant came back into the room and asked if anyone needed any refills on their tea. I told her I needed something stronger. After she left the room, Malachi turned to me.
“Are you alright my love? It’s not like you to have anything strong before the evening meal.”
I responded by saying, “I’m alright, it’s just my nerves.”
Malachi nodded his understanding and Damien gave me a big hug. “Everything will be okay, daddy.” I smiled down at Damien as the servant brought in my drink.
The wedding planning finally finished, and she took her leave as Zamir walked in and Ariendal graciously went to her husband and greeted him with an embrace and a kiss.
“Greetings everyone, I hope I haven’t missed lunch.”
Mom responded quickly, “Not at all, my dear, you’re just in time.” Zamir smiled at his wife, and we all made our way to the dining hall.
“Mark, I never got a chance to speak with you at the celebration last night. I would like to wish my congratulations on your engagement to my son. He’s lucky to have you.” The dark-haired elf began.
Now I see where Malachi got most of his looks, Mal looks a lot like his father Zamir Shadowblade, except for his tired features. The tall elf stands about seven feet tall, long black hair tied up neatly behind his head. Today he was wearing his military attire which did a lot for his physique. His military attire was made of leather, his colors were hanging from the right of his jacket. A small golden elf decorated the left side of the jacket; gracefully showing his rank. Zamir has coordinated many battles including the war during the early uprising with the humans. He was here when Ascension was first founded and continues to serve as High General for the Legion of Ascension and right hand to the King.
The leader of the Elder Council stands on the left. Where one coordinates the army, the other coordinates on more political issues. There are times where the Elder Council must help coordinate in the military efforts.
“Congratulations on your promotion as leader of the Elder Council, that’s a very important position. I have faith you will do a fine job.”
“Thank you, sir, I can only offer my best.” I replied nervously.
“No need for pleasantries, you’re my son, so you may call me father or dad, whichever you prefer.”
I smiled back at him, “Thanks dad.”
“My pleasure, and Damien congratulations on helping your new father in helping to solve an almost decade old mystery. I was told that you were responsible on taking Ormus down. I couldn’t be more of a proud Grandpa.”
Damien beamed at his grandfather, “Thanks Grandpa, it wasn’t easy.”
“I’m sure it wasn’t, there was always something about Ormus that I didn’t like, I couldn’t ever figure it out. Anyway, let’s all enjoy lunch!”
As we ate our meal, Malachi explained to his father everything that happened with Larin, even the part where he appeared out of the heavens to say his final farewell.
The meal concluded, and we all departed. Zamir was called away for more of his duties and Atmose went out to the castle grounds to help set up for the wedding that will happen in a few days.
I, Malachi and Damien decided to go home.
Malachi and I were laying on the couch in the living room together. My nerves still working on me. Mal held me to help ease my nervousness.
“It will be alright, my love.”
“I know I just never been married before, so I’m just a tad nervous.” I replied.
“Hey, I haven’t been either, but you know what’s preventing me from being nervous?”
I stared at him waiting for his reply, “What’s that?”
My lover replied quickly, “You.”
I couldn’t help but smile and I lowered my head to kiss him.
I could feel a certain young elf’s gaze on the back of my neck.
“We have an audience again. And this time, whispering under your breath won’t do any good.”
Malachi gave a hearty laugh. We turned our gaze in Damien’s direction.
The boy was all smiles, “You both are learning quickly!” Damien giggled and walked up to us. “By the way, daddy Mark. I’m working on a surprise for you.” I looked at Damien with a grin and turned my gaze to Malachi.
“Don’t look at me, I know nothing about it.”
“No daddy Mal doesn’t know. It’s a wedding gift and also a gift because of your promotion.”
“Oh, Damien you don’t have to.” I quickly responded.
“I know, but I wanted to. You will love it, me promise.”
I smiled as Damien turned and retreated out of the room.
I looked back at Malachi, “I’m surprised he didn’t trust you with this secret.”
My companion grinned back at me, “Maybe because he believes I would tell you.”
“That’s right, daddy.”
“Damn it, Damien, quit doing that.” Damien’s giggle could be heard throughout the cottage. “I swear that boy, knows me better then I know myself.”
“Well, you did say he is smart.”
“Yeah, too smart for his own good at times.”
I kissed Malachi and got up from the couch; headed towards my study. Which was set up for me before the celebration last night.
A couple hours later, I was looking over reports that were sent to me earlier that day when Damien walked in.
“Daddy Mark?” He asked.
“What can I help you with, son?” I felt mixed emotions after calling him son, I’ve never had a son before, so it was a strange sensation, but it felt good at that same time.
Damien moved his gaze down to my left arm and then back up to me again. I looked at him curiously, “Do you miss having your left hand?”
That was a question I wasn’t expecting, I replied, “Of course, I do. It still pains me I had to lose it, but I know if I kept it, I wouldn’t be here. The anchor was killing me.”
“I know daddy, I’m sorry you had to go through that. I was wondering if you wanted it back.”
I stared at him, puzzled, “Honestly, I would, but that’s a strange question to ask. How would that even be possible?”
The boy smiled at me as Malachi walked in the room and leaned up against the wall next to us.
I looked up at Mal and he was smiling down at me, “You knew about this?”
He nodded, “We were talking about it before our son walked in here and to answer your question, it’s possible.”
I looked down at the floor. Beginning to choke up a little, “I… I don’t know what to say.” They’ve done so much for me already, and now this?
“Just say yes, my love. It was actually my idea, this time, not Damien’s.”
Tears welled up in my eyes as I looked down where my hand used to be. It would feel so good to be whole again. Been so long since I’ve been without it. I remember after I finally found Delan again and he wouldn’t do anything more to ease the pain, I thought I was going to die. Reslan had to help me back to the palace where the Eternal Council was and put me down on a bed. I screamed in agony as it burned my hand and pain coursed through me, it was the first time he cried for me.
“It’s killing him, we need to do something.”
The pain got to be so much, and I slipped into unconsciousness and all I heard Reslan say was “Cut it off!”.
When I finally woke up, Reslan was sitting next to me on my bed.
“How do you feel?”
I looked at my left hand and it was no longer there, but it was wrapped. I smiled up at him and said, “I can’t believe it, the pain is gone. You know what this means?”
“What?”
“My fighting days are over.” I continued to smile.
Reslan laughed and said, “That’s okay, I will be the one who fights for both of us.”
I got up and kissed him.
Wiping the tears from my eyes, “Yes, I would like it back.”
Damien screamed excitedly and I got up to give my soon to be husband a kiss. Damien opened a portal to the infirmary, and we followed him through.
We arrived in the infirmary and Damien was already speaking with the mages and the priests and I was directed to a table where Malachi instructed me to lay down. He pulled up a chair to the right of me and took my hand in his. Moments later, everybody was scrambling around getting everything set up. Damien went to my left side and began to roll my sleeve up.
I still couldn’t believe this was happening and I still had tears streaming down my face and Malachi wiped them away and smiled down at me, still holding my hand, “Everything will be alright, I’m not leaving your side.” He leaned over and planted a kiss on my lips.
I looked up into his eyes. He didn’t have to say the words because I already knew. I would do the same thing for this man if the tables were turned.
“Okay daddy, I believe we’re ready.” My son turned to the other elves assembled in the room to address them, “I will need all of you to focus your power into me, this is going to take a lot, but it will be well worth it in the end. I understand this has only been done a couple of times and with me here this time, I know this will work.” He turned and looked down at me, “My daddy is worth it!”
“Damien, I love you so much my precious boy.”
The elven boy smiled at me and then signaled to the others he was about to start.
“Just relax, daddy.”
I nodded as he began to chant. As he was chanting, he outstretched his arms and a beam of light appeared and worked its way to where my hand used to be. Then that’s when the others began to chant with him, moving their arms up to the heavens. Balls of light appeared above their heads and seconds later they formed into a beam that connected to Damien’s.
I felt a strange sensation at the base of my arm, Malachi and myself looked down. My hand which once was lost, was now forming again. I couldn’t believe my eyes.
After what seemed like forever, my hand finally materialized; without the anchor, but there was a scar in its place. Damien and the other elves ended the spell and the beams of light disappeared.
I lifted my hand up and began to move my wrist and flex my fingers. This was real. My eyes began to tear up again and I started to cry, “Damien! You did it!” I wrapped my left arm around my son and held him. “I love you so much; thank you. After all this time, I feel complete again.”
Malachi leaned over and hugged us both. After we finished. I got up off the table and began flexing my hand again.
“Thank you all so much for helping my son do this.”
One of the priests responded, “It’s what we do, sir. We are so pleased that it worked. You really don’t need to thank us.”
I smiled at the priest as Damien came to my side, “Come on, Daddy. You need your sleep; we have a wedding tomorrow.”
Malachi took my hand once again in his and said, “This is one of my wedding gifts to you.”
I leaned on him as we walked through the portal to go home.
The next morning, I was in one of the rooms of the castle while the tailor made some last-minute adjustments to my wedding attire, the King was also in the room already sipping on one of the finest wines in all of Ascension, Linguine’s Pride, while reading the parchment that had the words for the ceremony on it.
I really wanted some wine because I was so nervous, but Malachi’s mother chastised me when I tried ordering: Not before the wedding silly boy. I laughed to myself at the memory.
Atmose looked up at me and said, “I hope you’re ready, Mark. This is the biggest day of your life.” He looked down at my hands and noticed they were shaking, he took a hold of them and said, “Breath it will be okay.”
I looked up at him, “I know, I just never did this before.”
The King cupped my head in his hands, “You will be fine, don’t you worry so much.”
I smiled at him as he turned and walked out the room.
I took a deep breath as I was motioned out of the room to take my place.
After the rest of the wedding party walked up the aisle, Damien insisted earlier to walk up with me, which I graciously accepted. Malachi and Atmose didn’t protest. When I took my place to walk up the aisle, Damien grabbed my hand. My gaze drifted to Malachi, and I saw him smiling at me. I could already feel the tears threatening to spill in my eyes. I felt Damien tugging on my hand, letting me know it was time to walk.
I noticed all the people in attendance, Humans, Elves, Dwarfs. All the races came from all over Ascension. I could feel the butterflies in my stomach and thought to myself: This is it, no backing out now. I turned my gaze back to Malachi who was still smiling at me, he took my hand and we both turned to Atmose.
The King cleared his throat, “Ladies and Gentlemen, we are gathered here from all corners of Ascension to witness these two lovers become one in our Goddess Iolas’ name, she will be the one to bestow the gift of marriage upon these two souls, for she is our Goddess of Love, she is our most holy! I bid you now to help in ascending these two hearts in togetherness as they both take the sacred vow of marriage. Mark and Malachi have both overcome their pasts, have triumphed over their hardships and have both passed the sacred tasks of our most holy. With their undying love for one another, they have created a strong bond to which will never be broken. They will carry this bond through all of eternity. Mark and Malachi, are you both ready to recite your most sacred vows?”
We both said, “Yes we are.”
“Please turn and face each other; Malachi pledge your vows.”
Malachi looked into my eyes and held both of my hands in his, “Mark Dawnrider, I promise to be by your side no matter the situation. For you are my heart’s desire, for you are my one and only. You have done so much for our family and for our kingdom. I loved you since the first day I laid eyes on you. I will always continue to love you through all our future problems, through your weakest and darkest times, I will be the light that will guide you back to your strength. You mean more to me then you will probably ever know. In our Goddess Iolas’ name, I proclaim these vows to be true.”
When Malachi finished his vows a blue beam of light came down from the heavens and enveloped him.
“Mark please pledge your vows.”
“Malachi Shadowblade, I promise to love you now and for all of eternity, you have always been the light of my life since we first met. I will admit, I was scared at first because I didn’t know I could love another person again, but I overcame that. I promise to be the best husband and great parent to our son, Damien. Without you both, my life wouldn’t be complete. You have done so much for me since I came here. And I promise you I will repay that debt through all of eternity. You are everything I could ask for, hope for, even wish for. I never really believed in miracles until you came into my life. You’ve changed me into the man I’ve become. For this, in our Goddess Iolas’ name, I proclaim these vows to be true.”
This time when I finished, a green beam of life came down from the heaven’s and enveloped me. I could feel the light pushing me closer to Malachi until we both embraced each other.
As Atmose spoke again, rings began forming on our fingers, “These two have now received the gift from our Goddess Iolas’, for they have become one this day. Mark and Malachi, may you both continue to receive the blessings bestowed upon you this day and allow our Goddess to remain in your hearts through all of Eternity. Please, I ask you both to turn toward all the people gathered here.”
We obediently turned.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, may I introduce to you Malachi and Mark Shadowblade! You may both turn to each other once again and seal your vows and your gifts.”
Malachi quickly embraced me and kissed me; my heart began to beat fast in my chest as the crowd cheered. Even though our eyes were closed, we both could feel each other’s tears as we continued to kiss.
When the kiss finally ended, Damien ran up to us and Malachi pulled him into his arms and the three of us walked down the aisle together.
Moments later, we were in the reception area in the grass area on the mid-level to the castle. I stayed standing next to Malachi with Damien in between us as we greeted the guests as they came up the stairs, giving us our congratulations.
The king came walking towards us, with the flute of wine he promised me earlier. He handed it to me, and I raised it up and toasted with him and Malachi.
“To eternal happiness,” he said with a smile.
Damien, Malachi and I repeated his words, “To eternal happiness.”
We all clanged our flutes with Damien’s flute filled with Asparite Tea.
As the remaining guests took their seat, Atmose stood up from the head table, “I have known Malachi since the day he was born, he has been like a brother to me I never had. This means so much to me that I was able to share in this momentous occasion with everyone. And I was honored to do the ceremony. Mark, he may not have been with us long, but I feel I’ve known him all my life. I couldn’t be happier that he is now a forever part in this family. He has a big heart for everyone, he is one of the most selfless people I have ever met. Mark, you mean so much to me and you always will. May you and Malachi share a lifetime of endless happiness together. To Mark and Malachi!”
Unexpectedly, after Atmose took his seat again. The sky flashed in a white light and two figures floated down and on the balcony.
“Meme! Papa!” Damien couldn’t hide his excitement.
“Oh, my sweet Damien, how I miss you so.” Queen Lalena smiled down at her grandson and planted a kiss on his cheek.
“Love you, grandson.” King Theramus said.
“Love you too, Papa!” Damien replied, ecstatically.
The King and Queen walked over to Malachi and me.
“You know we couldn’t miss this nephew.” Theramus said with a smile.
Malachi beamed, “I’m so glad you both are here.”
“You are both very welcome. We also came here to thank Mark for solving our murders. Now we can finally rest knowing that my brother paid for his crime. We also have Damien to thank for that. We are so proud of you grandson.” Theramus smiled down at Damien, who was at his side.
Lalena looked at Damien, “For that you both will receive a gift from the both of us. Damien you are hereby bestowed the title High Battle Mage of Ascension. With this title comes even greater power and greater wisdom. You have selflessly given a gift to your father Mark that no one else could, you made him whole again. For that the God’s and Goddess’ smile upon you. With this new power you have gained you will be an unstoppable force in the tides of battle. Use these powers wisely grandson, very few have ever received this gift.”
Now Theramus turned to me, “Mark Shadowblade! You are hereby bestowed the title Ascended Mage of Heroism. With this title you will forever be recognized for your selfless acts of bravery. You have overcome impossible deeds and may you continue to do so in your journey ahead. May people look up to you for your strength, guidance, and ability to lead. With this gift, you have also received even greater power and greater wisdom. You make us very proud and extremely happy that you are officially in our family and may you find continued strength and courage with Malachi by your side!”
And now the King and the Queen walked over to their son Atmose, “Mother, father, I miss you both so much.”
“We know son, our feelings are the same. Even though we’re no longer here physically, just remember we will always be here whenever you need us. We love you so very much and it saddens us deeply because of what happened. Remember to take care of yourself and our home, we believe you will be a finer King then I.” Theramus and Lalena reached down and placed their hands on their son’s shoulders.
The king and queen walked back to the middle of the balcony and turned to meet Malachi’s and Damien’s gaze, “We promise to take care of Larin for you both.”
Malachi looked at Damien and his son nodded to him, “Send Larin our love and tell him that we forgive him.”
The King and Queen both smiled at the two and nodded.
With that, they departed back to the heavens and the sky returned to normal.
The party continued, Mark and Malachi both did the first dance, then Damien wanted up on my shoulders. I happily scooped him up and sat him down where he wanted to be. All the other guests joined in after a while. Damien threw one of his hands in the sky and a beam of light shot upward and exploded into fireworks. The booms continued for as long as the dance did. Then Ariendal wanted to cut in and dance with her new son, Malachi smiled at his mother as his father laughed grabbed his hands and they both began to dance.
“Look at those two. I have not seen my husband so happy in ages. He loves Malachi dearly, whenever our boy needed him, he was always there. That boy means more to him then the Legion. It does my heart good knowing their love for each other continues to grow with each passing day.” Ariendal said, smiling while she danced with me. “I can’t thank you enough for making my son happy again, he was depressed for years. I never thought he’d come out of it. You’re a blessing in disguise, Mark.”
Her words brought a tear to my eye, “Mom you really don’t have to mention it, he did the same to me. I also feel blessed to have all of you in my life. I can’t thank you enough for accepting me into your hearts.”
“You are very welcome.” She beamed.
Our gazes turned toward Malachi and his father once again still dancing and laughing. Ariendal and I began to laugh ourselves.
This is indeed the happiest day of my life. I have a family again, a loving husband, a sweet, beautiful boy. My life is once again complete.
Damien came running towards me and broke me of my thoughts, “Daddy Mark! Daddy Mark! Come I have your gift ready; I can’t wait for you to see it!”
Malachi, Zamir, Ariendal and I followed behind Damien.
“Stand right here daddy.” My son excitedly said.
I did as I was told.
Damien whisked his hands towards the cloth that was hanging loosely over a model statue, and it fell to the ground.
I couldn’t believe my eyes, it was a purple mage robe, with purple streams going down the front and the back, blue diamonds flourished around the neck area, Acoura gems flowing down the front flanking the buttons that held the front together. The ancient symbol of Ascension accentuated the left side of the robe and a symbol of the Nourus Wolf on the other, bordered with crimson jewels of multiple colors. There was also a pristine shine to it and that could only mean one thing, Damien enchanted this robe.
“Damien. You made this yourself?” I asked in shock.
The boy nodded.
“I love it, baby boy!” I knelt and gave him a kiss on the cheek and pulled him in for a big hug, “Thank you so much.”
“I know you noticed the shine daddy, I enchanted it with rare enchants and added rare gems to it. Everything on this robe will strengthen your spells and give you even more protection. If you ever had to fight again, very rarely will you lose.”
“Son you’re the best!”
Damien smiled up at me proudly.
I suddenly felt a little light-headed. Malachi rushed to my side, “Mark, what’s wrong.”
“I think it’s just from all of this excitement. The party is dwindling down now, so I think I’m ready to go home.”
Epilogue:
Damien noticed a sudden change in me and couldn’t understand why. He helped Malachi take me to our room, I lost my balance and fell to the floor in the middle of the living room. The whispers in my head became louder, and these are not the same whispers I normally hear.
“Daddy!” Damien yelled.
I held my head and started grunting in pain as the whispers grew louder and louder.
“Damien, help me get him to the couch!”
They both succeeded on getting me where they wanted me. Malachi got on his knees in front of me as the pain grew stronger.
“Damien, summon your uncle!”
Damien did as he was told and within seconds, King Atmose appeared.
“What’s happening?”
“We don’t know, after Damien showed him the robe he made him, he said he felt light-headed and after we brought him here, he collapsed to his knees. Damien helped me get him on the couch.”
I began to scream, “No! It hurts! Make it stop!”
Damien ran to my side and held me, scared, and didn’t know what else to do.
Then there was a burst of light behind Malachi.
And there was an unknown voice that spoke, “You only delayed the inevitable! And now you will soon pay for your interference!” The voice and the light quickly disappeared.
The pain in my head finally subsided. “Mark, are you alright?” Atmose asked.
“I think so. At least the pain stopped. What was that?”
“I don’t know, but I have a feeling we will soon find out.” Malachi replied.
Malachi, Damien and Atmose helped me to my feet and walked me back to the bedroom. Damien and the King departed the room as Malachi relieved me of my attire and hung them up neatly in the closet. He picked me up and set me down on the bed and climbed in next to me.
“Are you sure you’re alright?” The dark-haired elf asked.
I grinned at him and said, “Never been better.” I rolled over on top of my husband and we began to make love for the first time.
Author’s Note:
I hope you enjoyed the Prequel story of the World of Ascension series. As you know, I do enjoy writing, it is one of my favorite things to do. And share them with people who enjoy them. This is also my first attempt at creating a whole new world. To be honest, at first, I didn’t know if I would ever have direction in this story. For months, I toyed with so many ideas on how to get this story started.
I would like to thank the ones who made Dragon Age: Inquisition a reality. All the people who worked on it at BioWare. Without my fan made story introducing one of my main characters, this story would have never been possible. I laughed and I cried throughout the entire gameplay as I did while writing this story. You are all a true inspiration to me.
I also would like to thank Blizzard Entertainment; I’ve been playing your games since WarCraft: Orcs and Humans and now I’m an 8-year veteran of your Massively-Multiplayer-Online Game World of Warcraft. If it wasn’t for you guys, I wouldn’t have fallen in love with elves.
And I would like to thank the people who supported me throughout this process. My adopted parents Karen and Dave. All my children and grandchildren in virtual worlds whom I consider my real family, I love you all.
Last and not least, my late grandmother Lois who passed away in February of 2018, all my life you have been an inspiration to me, I love you and miss you with each passing day, and I will always cherish the memories we made together and with the family. I also want to thank you for introducing me to the author John Grisham and help feed my enjoyment of reading. May we see each other again one day.
