Employee Guidelines
Applicable After Dark
We’re pleased to have you joining us. Please note that your first shift begins tonight.
You may notice that the building feels larger after dark. This is normal and does not require any acknowledgement.
You will be working alone. This is intentional.
Should you encounter another employee during your shift, please understand that either you are mistaken, or the schedule has changed without notice. In either case, do not attempt to clarify.
Please remain within the marked areas at all times. The markings are subtle and may only become visible once you have already stepped beyond them. This is regrettable but not grounds for complaint.
Please note that the marked areas may change during your shift. This is not an error. Do not attempt to re-mark them, trace them, or commit them to memory.
If you find yourself retracing the same corridor multiple times, proceed as normal. The corridor will resolve itself when appropriate.
Breaks are permitted at your discretion. However, you may find that time behaves inconsistently in certain corridors. If your break appears to last longer than expected, resume work immediately and log the discrepancy as “environmental.”
At no point should you attempt to measure the building, count floors, or confirm exterior dimensions. Any conclusions reached will be inaccurate and may cause unnecessary distress.
Should the lights flicker, continue working. Should the lights dim completely, remain where you are until they return. Should the lights behave as though responding to you personally, this should be ignored.
Do not acknowledge voices that address you by name.
If a voice addresses you using a name that is not yours, this should be considered a courtesy.
Please maintain a calm and courteous demeanor at all times.
Screaming is discouraged.
Running is unprofessional and creates unnecessary attention.
Should you feel the urge to flee, sit down until it passes. Most urges do.
You may experience a sense of being observed. This does not indicate a failure on your part, nor does it require corrective action.
You have been issued a clipboard, a pen, and a small flashlight.
The flashlight is not for illumination. Please do not rely on it to show you where you are going. It will not help.
If the clipboard becomes heavier over the course of the shift, this indicates it is functioning correctly.
Under no circumstances should you read what writes itself on the paper. This is for record-keeping purposes only and does not require your involvement.
Personal items brought onto the premises may be altered. This includes watches, phones, keys, and any object you associate strongly with yourself. Do not attempt to retrieve items that no longer recognise you.
You may experience moments of uncertainty regarding your own position, purpose, or duration of employment. This is common and should not be escalated.
If you forget why you entered a room, do not return to the previous one. The reason is no longer there.
If you encounter a version of yourself performing duties you do not remember completing, allow them to continue uninterrupted.
Please refrain from apologising aloud. Apologies imply fault.
If you believe you have made a mistake, wait. If the mistake is real, it will correct you.
Should you hear your own voice speaking from elsewhere, remain silent until it finishes.
If silence feels unusually loud, this indicates compliance.
All irregularities must be documented before the end of your shift.
This includes, but is not limited to:
– Additional doors
– Fewer doors than previously observed
– Doors that remember you
If an incident occurs that you are unable to describe, please write “N/A” and move on.
Repeated use of “N/A” may be reviewed.
Failure to comply with the above guidelines may result in corrective action.
Corrective action may include, but is not limited to:
– Additional duties
– Reduced access to marked areas
– Reassignment to corridors requiring familiarity
– Temporary suspension of exit privileges
In some cases, corrective action may be implemented before non-compliance is observed. This is a preventative measure and should not be interpreted personally.
Please note that corrective action is not punitive. It is instructional.
If you believe corrective action has been applied in error, you may submit a written appeal. Appeals should be brief, factual, and submitted only once. Appeals will be reviewed when appropriate.
If no response is received, this indicates the matter has been resolved.
We appreciate your cooperation and flexibility during this transition period.
Please remember that all procedures exist for your safety, comfort, and continued functionality within the building.
Your shift will conclude when it is complete.
At the end of your shift, return the clipboard, pen, and flashlight to the desk where you found them. If the desk is no longer present, leave the items where you are standing. They will be collected.
Thank you again for joining us.
We’re glad you’re here.
