It's been the same nightmare for over 10 years now. Reliving the night I lost every thing that ever mattered to me.

When I jumped off the roof of the hospital I thought it would lead to my death instead of entering the shadows of the world.

Waking up from the hunger pain this time. I barely slept 2 to 4 hours nowadays. I made it a point not to stay in one place for too long. In doing so I've been all over North America aside from Alaska. During all this time I have been practicing and studying my new powers. With practice I could turn my body from corporeal to a shadow, hide in someone else's, and astral project.

My body was stiff from sleeping on the ground in an alley way. All I have is the clothes on my back and the thick framed sunglasses that Adam from Washington bought and gifted to me. He saved my life after I almost drowned in the woods. Touching the glasses I remembered with a smile how he treated me. For the first time in far too long I didn't feel like a monster. I hated having to leave him even if it was the right thing to do.

With a shake of my head I began doing basic stretching to be ready in case I either had to run or fight. Walking out into the streets I was in what's universally known as the shady side of a city. There was barely any people walking around at this time of night. Staying on the side walk I kept my wits about me as the journey to find a train began.

A run down building caught my attention. It was filled with the sound of people yelling which wouldn't have bothered me had I not heard a dog whimper followed by barking. Looking around to see a payphone a couple of blocks away I bolted toward it. Dialing 911 I got the operator and said that there was a possible dog fight going on. They tried asking for my name and in the spur of the moment I replied with, "Jane". They said it would take a few minutes for a car to come. I waited for about an hour for a cop car to finally show up. Watching as one of them got out to knock on the door to be answered by someone twice his size. The really big guy closed the door then opened it up again with what I could only assume was an envelope filled with cash. Seeing all of that from under the cop car a boiling rage took a hold of me and for the first time since the night everything changed I saw color. It was red.

The sound of screams and tearing filled the warehouse walls. By the time I was done the only living beings were the dogs cowering away from me. All except a pup that came up to me slowly. Lowering myself to the floor I reached a bloody hand out. The pup took a couple of sniffs before getting closer for me to scratch under his chin. Taking a guess I gently said, "Good boy." The other dogs started to crowd me once they knew I wasn't a threat to them. Looking around to find a backdoor after opening it with a pointed finger I yelled, "Out." All the dogs ran past me except for the pup who stayed by my side. I commanded with a growl, "Get out." The poor thing shook, wet himself, and finally ran out into the night.

Inhaling sharply I looked around for a hose to clean myself off when the front door opened to be flooded in with men in gear come in with guns raised. In the process to turn and run someone shot me with what sounded like a gun until electricity ran through my body. Forcing myself to continue moving more people to shot me. Somebody yelled, "Put her down!" Falling to the floor I kept willing myself to move. I had to run away. The volts were still running through me as the butt of a gun hit me square in the temple.
