Who's that knocking on my door-Should I let em in?
A tale of real and questionable intrusions in the middle ofthe night.

Don't go knocking on my door
It began on Halloween night 1966 when I was eight years old. We lived in what we later would call the Old House. I had just come in from Trick or Treating and had sat down on the livingroom couch to watch an encore of It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown which had debuted on October 27.
I was eating candy and watching TV when there was a loud knock on the front door. My grandmother came running because she thought it was some late Trick or Treaters but when she opened the door no one was there.
I walked up beside her and went onto the porch. There was no sign of anyone to the left or right or down the hill in front. I was excited as a child and thrilled as I thought perhaps a ghost, ghoul, or goblin had appeared at my house on this Halloween night.
I was young and unaware of the dangers of humans and the supernatural. Unexplained knocks would continue in later life.
Later life
It was 2:00 a.m. and I was in a deep sleep when I heard the loud knock at the front door. My husband worked night shift, and the children were at their grandmother's, so I was alone.. On this night the Paul McCartney and Wings song "Let Em In" came to mind.
"Someone's knocking on the door, someone's ringing the bell. Open the door and let me in." Did I want to know who was at my door or let them in this time of the night? I had a male ?eighbor on each side who knew my husband worked night shift.
What if one of them was going to try something with me? This time I was apprehensive and the woner of childhood was replaced with concern about what really might be going on.
Should I open the door and let em in???
I went to the living room and asked, "Who is it?" I was met with silence. I waited a few moments,s then opened the door and saw no one. I returned to my bed and kept the light on. I prayed, then eventually fell back asleep.
Again I was jolted by the sound of a knock on the door. It was so loud and so real I knew it was not a dream or my imagination. I went to my son's bedroom and looked out the window, and there was no one standing on the front porch.
Scientific explanations
Experts suggest hearing knocks on the door in your sleep may be hypnagogic/hypnopompic hallucinations. These are false auditory perceptions during the transition between sleep and wakefulness.
Another explanation is that it could be a sensory experience related to your sleep state, such as Exploding Head Syndrome. In each occurance I was not fully asleep and very tired. Whatever it is, I can tell you it feels so real and the knocking is loud.
Who's at the door?
A few days later, I was asleep, and around midnight, I heard the sound of my husband's keys in the door. I wondered why he was coming home so early and waited for him to enter the house. He never did. Was this due to the scientfic explanation or was a spirit trying to trick me?
I looked out the window, and his vehicle was nowhere around, so I decided I had been dreaming. Still I could nto shake the ominous feeling of the unknown.
About a week later, my spouse was asleep beside me when there was a knock at 3:00 a.m. I went to the door, and a neighbor's son was standing there with his three-year-old daughter. HYe wanted a ride to take her home to her mother.
My husband got up and gave them a ride but I questioned why this young man would wait so late to have his little girl go home. At least this knock was real.

Knocking on the door
At least three more times while we lived in the house, I heard a knock on the front door that woke me, but no one was there. It seemed so real and not like a dream. Some people say I was in between dreaming and being awake when the spirit realm is clearer.
I don't know, but I told God if He needed to speak with me just talk to me. I told the devil he was not going to trick me adn interfere with my sleep. I also told the death angel he was not welcome to come knocking on my door.
In later years at other homes, I have not experienced this occurrence. I also no longer have pesky neighbors who need rides in the wee hours of the night. I think back to Halloween 1966 and wonder if a teeanger had knocked and ran or if we had a supernatural visitor. At this point I will never know.
