Who Are We?

“Are we happy?”

“Yes, mostly.”

“Do we talk to dad still?”

“No, we haven’t talked to him for years. But, that’s okay. It’s better this way.”

“So we’re not still friends?”

“He never wanted to be your friend. You’ll understand that eventually. It’ll hurt though.”

“Well what about everyone else. Are we still close?”

“Not really, we’re in touch mostly. But, you find friends, good loving friends.”

“Did we get married?”

“Yes, we did and he’s wonderful.”

“He makes the list? We didn’t settle?”

“Right, we didn’t settle. Stay strong when the world scoffs at you. You’re a smart girl.”

“What about writing?”

“We’re doing that. And painting, and sewing, and all sorts of things.”

“Where do we live?”

“Lots of places. We love to travel. Our life is very adventurous!”

“What about Alaska?”

“We moved there for a while and loved it. It’s the most beautiful place in the world quite possibly. We’re still exploring.”

“Do we have kids? How many?”

“No, we don’t have any. We don’t want any. Besides, we can’t have them anyway.”

“I kinda figured we would have a lot….”

“We outgrow that. Kids are an appealing idea when you don’t have the full picture. But don’t worry, we are an amazing aunt.”

“Well, what about dogs, we have one still right?”

“Oh yeah. We always have dogs. We even do dog shows for a stint, just like we always wanted to.”

“You don’t dress like I do.”

“Well yeah, our taste changes. It’s fun, I promise. You get to be as weird and free as you please. And, everyone loves you for it.”

“So it gets better.”

“Right, it gets better. So dry up those tears and keep enduring for us, okay? This awful time will become a very faded memory. I promise.”
