Whispers in the Wood

A Bargain in Barkwood

By Amadi DivinePublished 2 years ago 3 min read

Reina clutched the frayed map, its edges worn thin from years of desperate hope. Barkwood, the ancient forest whispered to be both sanctuary and death trap, loomed before her. Its gnarled branches, thick as forgotten gods, scraped the twilight sky, and an eerie silence pressed down, broken only by the rustle of unseen creatures. Reina, a refugee fleeing a kingdom consumed by war, had nowhere else to turn.

Legend spoke of the Whisperwood, a hidden grove within Barkwood, where the forest itself held sentience. A desperate plea formed in Reina's mind, a silent prayer on the wind. "Help me," she whispered, her voice swallowed by the hungry silence.

A shift in the air, subtle as a sigh. A massive oak, its bark etched with ancient runes, creaked, its branches groaning like skeletal arms reaching for the sky. A voice, older than time itself, rumbled in Reina's head, a tapestry of rustling leaves and whispering wind.

"You seek the Whisperwood, child?"

Reina flinched, but relief flooded her. "Yes," she gasped, her voice barely a squeak. "I need your help."

"Barkwood is no haven for the faint of heart," the voice rumbled. "Danger lurks in every shadow. What price are you willing to pay for refuge?"

Reina swallowed hard. "Anything," she blurted. "I have nothing left to lose."

The forest hummed, considering. Then, the voice returned, sharper now, with a hint of amusement. "Very well. You may enter. But know this: Barkwood extracts a price. You will carry a message for the Whisperwood, a message you must deliver even if it costs you your life."

Reina agreed without hesitation. The forest shifted, a path of moonlight parting the dense brush. With a final tremor, the ancient oak settled back into stillness.

The journey within Barkwood was a maze of shadows and unseen eyes. Bioluminescent fungi cast an eerie glow, illuminating strange, twisted flora that seemed to reach out with grasping tendrils. The forest felt alive, a watchful entity with secrets it held close.

Fear gnawed at Reina, but she pressed on, fueled by a spark of hope and the weight of the unknown message. Strange, guttural calls echoed in the distance, the whispers of unseen predators. Once, a pair of glowing eyes glimmered in the undergrowth, watching her with cold, hungry intensity. Reina quickened her pace, adrenaline coursing through her veins.

Days bled into nights, the sun a distant memory filtered through the thick canopy. Reina was on the verge of collapse when she stumbled upon a clearing bathed in an ethereal golden light. In its center stood a grove of ancient trees, their bark smooth and silver, leaves shimmering like polished emeralds. This was the Whisperwood.

As Reina entered, the air hummed with a comforting energy. The voice, softer now, filled her head. "The message, child. Speak it."

Reina relayed the details of the fallen kingdom, the king's descent into madness, and the approaching war that threatened to engulf the entire land. The voice listened intently, then a deep sadness resonated within the forest.

"The message has been received," it finally spoke. "You have fulfilled your bargain. Now, you may leave."

Reina recoiled. "Leave? But where will I go?"

The voice chuckled, a sound like wind chimes dancing in a summer breeze. "Barkwood has shown you a path, child. It is up to you to walk it. Go now, and remember, courage blooms even in the darkest places."

With a final tremor, Reina was ejected from the clearing. Blinking back tears, she looked up at the familiar, terrifying canopy of Barkwood. She was weak, but a newfound resolve pulsed within her. The forest had not just offered her refuge; it had given her a purpose.

Reina straightened, a map of hope taking shape in her mind. Barkwood, the forest of whispers, had taken away her fear and replaced it with courage. The price had been steep, but the reward, she knew, was a chance to fight for a better tomorrow.
