‘Godzilla: Tokyo SOS’ Comes to US Theaters for the First Time TONIGHT

Original Title: Mekagojira, Mosura, and Gojira: Here's a surprise, Tôkyô S.O.S.

The previous Godzilla movie ended with a disappointing anti-climax because Godzilla and Kairyu, also known as Mechagodzilla, had fought their final battle but then simply left, leaving the movie without a conclusion. Mekagojira, Mosura, and Gojira: Godzilla, also known as Tôkyô S.O.S. Tokyo SOS did something that no Godzilla film since the Millennium had done before: after five films, the series finally attempted continuity! Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. is a direct sequel to the previous film and was originally planned as the third and final installment of a never completed trilogy. Masaaki Tezuka was back as director and co-wrote the script with Masahiro Yokotani. His film takes place one year after the events of the previous one.

When the Shobijin, Mothra's twin familiars, appear and warn that Godzilla will continue to attack Japan because they have used bones from the original Godzilla in Kiryu, Kityu, which had been severely damaged in its battle with Godzilla, is undergoing repairs and a refit. They suggest that the bones be returned to the sea, and Mothra offers its services as defender of Japan in Kiryu's place, in the hopes that this will be enough to appease Godzilla. Mothra, on the other hand, will declare war on humanity if they reject the offer. Kamoebas, a giant turtle (perhaps a dig at Gamera, the rival giant monster superstar?), is discovered dead on a beach in Japan, with wounds indicating that it had fought Godzilla, who soon appears and fights Mothra. Kiryu participates in the conflict, but it is too powerful and defeats both of its rivals.

On Infant Island, twin Mothra larvae emerge from their mother's egg and rush to her aid, fending off Godzilla while the adult Mothra sacrifices herself to save her young. The larvae wrap Godzilla in their silk with Kiryu's assistance, but the roar of the monster awakens something in the DNA of the original Godzilla, which was used to make the new Mechagodzilla, and Kiryu dives into the sea with Godzilla.

It's hard to evaluate Godzilla fully: Because Tokyo S.O.S. is a film that can't possibly stand on its own, it can only be seen as the second chapter in a trilogy that was frustratingly left incomplete. None of it will make sense unless you watch the previous film, Gojira X Mekagojira (2002). It's technically flawless, and Michiru Oshima's score, which he had created for the Millennium series before Gojira tai Megagirasu, is outstanding once more: Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, Ji Shometsu Sakusen (2000). But you can't watch it on its own; you have to watch it with Gojira X Mekagojira as part of a pair or you'll get completely lost.

The action scenes are great, and Mothra looks absolutely stunning once more. Of all the classic monsters, she seems to have benefited most from her Millennium era appearances, with her stunning redesign being truly stunning. However, the film has a script that is uninteresting and undeveloped. At the point when Toho chose to proceed with the narrative of Kiryu, Toho authorized four different story frames for Tezuka who hated every one of them and composed his own layout short-term. As a result, the movie feels rushed and incomplete, the story is simple, and the characters are barely portrayed. The main characters from the previous film are quickly written out and replaced by a new group who are as uninteresting as the worst kaiju movie characters.

In any case, the activity scenes are abundant, astounding and superbly nitty gritty which goes a good approach to making Gojira tai Mosura tai Mekagojira: Tolerable Tôkyô SOS. It was shown on a double bill with the anime Hamtaro in Japan: On its opening weekend, Ham Ham Grand Prix performed well enough to reach third place in the box office charts. However, it was insufficient to save the proposed trilogy, and Kairyu's story ends here, forever entangled with Godzilla at the bottom of the sea and never-ending. This is unfortunate because Gojira X Mekagojira was excellent, and despite its numerous flaws, Gojira tai Mosura tai Mekagojira: Another enjoyable romp is Tôkyô S.O.S. Kairyu ought to get better. In Hiroyuki Sashita and Kobun Shizuno's animated Gojira, Mechagodzilla, as it was originally known, would later transform into an artificially intelligent city. Toho concluded that as opposed to finishing Kairyu's story it would head off in an altogether different path, setting Godzilla in opposition to a large group of beasts in Gojira: Godzilla/Fainaru Wozu: The End of Wars (2004) It would turn out to be a huge mistake, removing Godzilla from movie theaters for a decade.
