When Piet met Hilma
Question is: how and where?
“Beautiful!”
“Isn’t it?”
"Truly breathtaking."
“Have you been here long?”
“Just arrived. You?”
“I have also just arrived.”
“My name is Piet by the way.”
“Really? How interesting…”
“Oh! And you are?”
“I am?”
“Your name, my dear lady.”
“My name is Hilma and ple…”
“Yes! I knew it. Hilma af Klint. I have heard of you.”
“Well... I know of no Piet. You have heard of me in what connection, pray?”
“I am Piet Mondrian, and you are an artist from Sweden. An early proponent of the abstract form. In life, I always meant to see your work. Alas…”

This story in exactly 100 words (a drabble) was inspired by an art exhibition at the Tate Modern in London: Hilma af Klint & Piet Mondrian: Forms of Life which is open until 3 September 2023. The story was written on an iPhone while surrounded by the works of af Klint and Mondrian.
Hilma af Klint was a Swedish painter who was perhaps the first modern abstract artist. Dutch painter Piet Mondrian is best known for his abstract work, but began his career, as did af Klint, as a landscape painter.
Both artists shared an interest in new ideas of scientific discovery, spirituality and philosophy. Af Klint was also a medium, and the exhibition showcases some of her large-scale, otherworldly paintings she believed were commissioned by higher powers.
These two artists never met. The story depicts a fictional meeting. The question is, how and where did they meet? Perhaps more importantly: why?
