In the bleeding cold, Marine First Lieutenant Johnson Sher and Captain Vander Swiftson sat inside a trailer with a broken heater. They worked on the weapons system drill.

“I say that it is a detriment to mental stability,” Sher claimed.

“No, I reap great understanding and guidance from the Word,” Swifton asserted.

Their breaths appeared in the air like apparitions looming in the night.

“I say, walk by smell and not by faith. When you can do that the keys to the structure of the universe are in your hands.”

“You can’t say that to me now.”

“I can, sir.”
