“Jaden we cannot do this. Leaving the ship is prohibited. We will be shipped back.” Eric warned her. “I am doing it now and you can come or stay. Did you take care of the alarm on the door?” She wanted to make sure that was done. Out the door they went.
They had to go quickly. She spotted a cave not too far from where they landed the ship. By the time they managed to reach the cave Erick was winded
He needed her helmet. She gave it to him. She was very surprised she had no trouble breathing at all.
She helped Erick to the rock. He let her take time to look around. She motioned to leave. He got up. They started to leave. When she went to shine the light for him, something shiny caught her eye. She grabbed the bag from her belt and managed to get it. Not being able to look at it, because she had to get Erick back. They left.
They got into the decontamination room. Jaden helped him off with his suit and then did hers. She took the bag out and knew that she had time to examine it. It was a heart shaped locket. It blew their minds. “How did she manage to not need a helmet? Why is a locket found in this cave?
The light went on. The door opened up and they scurried out and put everything back. Erick opened the gym door they came though. He made sure no one was around, and they went through it.
The captain came across them as they rounded the corner. “Look at you two. You guys spend too much time in that gym.” he told them. He was like a father to Jaden. “Captain, I need to speak to you. Do you have time now? Please, it is important.” she begged. He could tell by her face it is important.
He took her to his office. “I need to hear the truth of what happened to my parents. I know they did not die in a crash or a hijacking” She began to cry. Jaden, I was afraid this day would come. “What makes you think they did not die that way?'' he asked her.
She handed him the locket. He reached for it. She could tell that he already knew what it was. His eyes became blurry with tears. His hands shook as he tried to open it up. The image he saw was so overwhelming that he began to sob. Jaden just sat there putting all the puzzle pieces together.
“You are my real father? Why the secret? She cried. Jaden rushed into his arms. They embraced as never before. Not wanting to end this moment. “Tell me please what happened. I need to know,” she told him. “We heard that we were going to be invaded. I knew that cave was there. Your mother and the crew went there. We had protected gear and were set up down there for the time the next ship comes. There was a cave in and you and I were the only survivors. When the ship finally came I had to hush everything up including you. I heard they were to be our allies coming. Our allies got struck down on the way here. We got the report of it and just managed to get everyone to safety in time. Were good there for almost six months. The cave -in happened and we ventured out. To find them gone and the ship still here. I tried to get through the debris. It was useless. We had a hard time breathing and I knew I had to get you to safety. I notified them at headquarters and they sent people out. Here on earth there is not much left anywhere. That is why this is the post that know one wants to take charge of. We were to be the colony that started it all over again. I will not give up that idea. We have made some good strides. I want you to be here with me. Do not do anything that could take you away from me too. Do you hear me!! He held her so tight for dear life. He held her longer. He waited so long for this day. How many times he looked at her. I Want to tell her. To hear the word dad. He knows somehow this is a sign. Life may be out there. Waiting to be found. They broke the moment and she handed him the locket. She looked at him and he looked at her. A look they will always cherish.
“Here let me put this on you where it belongs forever.” Dad , wow I said dad. I will have to be careful around people on the ship.” She said “No I decided no more of that. I want the whole ship to know who you are. My daughter! After all, I oversee these buckets of bolts! He remarked. She sat on his lap and he put the locket on his daughter. They both held the picture in their hands, with tears coming down. To know now they belong to each other forever was too unbelievable to be true. It is. Jaden could not wait to tell Erick.
“Wait, how did you get this heart shaped locket.? Jaden answer my question!” I asked you. She got off his lap and went around and sat down. “I know you are not going to like this. I have been looking into that open cave. We were very careful and got in the chamber before we came back into the ship.” She started.
He rose up quickly, turned his back to her and went over to the wall, trying to get composed. She knew that move so well. She just sat there, waiting for the bomb to blow. Instead, he came over and sat down.
“Listen dad. I have been studying this cave. There is a rumor of deep mine shafts and an underground activity. Is it possible they could not get out from the front and went down. Then it was too far for them to go to find another way out. If you did not have a body then how did the locket get up there? It had to be another cave in. There is one more thing. Eric had trouble breathing. I gave him my helmet. I had no trouble breathing with it off. What does that mean? She asked.
He was so quiet. “Do you know you could have brought something back to this ship? It can wipe us all out. Is Erick ok? She was terribly upset now. “We were in the chamber long enough. I made sure of that. You know we have to send a search squad out” She pleaded.
“You and Erick are grounded to quarters for a week. Then to the infirmary to be checked out after. I will take all this in and then let you know my decision. She knew that was the end of that. Dad or no dad She got up and left. Knowing better not to say another word.
It was a long slow walk back to her station. Halfway there she remembered Erick. She began to run. When she got there, she pounced unannounced. No Erick. Too late. He probably will not speak to her again. Now it was even a loner walk.
After feeling so down for a while, she realized she was staring at the proof she had for her father. I am going to put it all together and show him when I get out. Days went by. She barely slept or ate. At last, she had it together on the day she was done.
A knock came on her door. It was Erick. I have, she started to say. He stopped her. We must go to the conference room. Everyone is to report this very minute. So, let’s do it. I do not want to be sent back. I am on good behavior only.
Things were buzzing. People with happy faces. By the time we got there, we were clear in the back. I could see my dad on the stage. “I am delighted and honored to tell everyone we were able today to complete a rescue mission. Today we brought home our crew that we thought were gone.” He said as he introduced them all. She did not see her mother and did she hear her name. She ran out the door back to her station. Erick knew not to go after her. About two hours later a knock came at her door. She did not want to see anyone. The door opened and someone sat down beside her. She felt a feeling she had not felt in a lifetime. She turned and there before her sat her mother with warm slow tears streaming down her very pale cheeks. Her mother told her there was a second cave-in. It made a hole only large enough to throw this locket through. I knew your father would find it. He would save us. It was both of you. They held each other vowing never to separate again.
