“What? You like boys?”

The little first grade girl named Jordyn frantically shrieked at her friend Maggie during recess. Maggie held her head down low like she was about to undergo her life sentence to prison for her crime. She braced herself because she knew the wrath of Jordyn wasn’t over yet. Sure enough, Jordyn continued…

“I can’t believe you’d betray us like this! After everything we’ve done for you… to support you… to protect you… to share pencils and erasers with you! You’ve gone off the complete deepest end possible… to think… we trusted you to be apart of the sisterhood… you’ve broken the bonded sisterhood that we worked so hard to make! All for one dumb boy who gave you a painted rock! Unbelievable!”

She looked behind her at the flock of other girls who were nodding their heads in agreement.

“That’s it… you’re out! You can’t be trusted anymore… after this, none of us can trust you… I’m shocked and I can’t believe you’ve chosen to like a boy! To accept his gift! Instead of having friends like us! For this, sadly… we can never speak to you again! Consider yourself ghosted as of today!”

Jordyn and the other girls swooped off like a flock of proud geese.

Maggie felt heartbroken. Warm tears rolled down her emotional, embarrassed cheeks. Still clenching the painted rock, she unrolled her sweaty fingers. The rock was painted to look like a beach scene. It even had a palm tree on it. It was the most special rock she’d ever seen.

There was a flutter in her heart when she thought about the boy who had given it to her. She knew all the prohibitions that “the sisterhood” had repeatedly imposed and recited within the clubhouse rules. There was just some kind of intrinsic force that had compelled her to smile at the boy and reach out her hand and accept the token of kindness, respect, and last, but not least, love…

Over the next several days, the silence from the other girls hurt with a deep sting but she remained strong. The boy who’d given her the rock even started walking with her to the pick up line after school was over. Somehow, he possessed the maturity and intuition to know that she’d chosen him and been persecuted for her bold decision. Every time she thought of him, it always brought a smile back to her face, when she started to feel sad or alone.

The path least traveled can be lonely but often rewarding. Luckily for Maggie she is not entirely alone :)
