Vince didn’t need anyone else but his books but the amount of times his peace was interrupted by others was more than he could count and it was starting to tick him off. The cafe he often found himself reading at was mostly silent but every so often some extrovert would come and sit with him. They always seemed concerned that he was sitting alone and asked if the young gentleman was waiting for someone. How they saw him sitting there so often alone. No Vince was not a lonely person and any person who talked with him would know that. So on this particular day Vince was mentally preparing himself for some energetic individual to come up and ask how his day was going.
It was about 10 in the morning when someone slipped into the chair across from him. He sighed waiting a few seconds before working up the energy to look at the oh so miserable soul that decided to sit across from him for whatever reason. Upon looking up he was flustered to find that the person sitting across from him had not bothered to look up herself. Her hair was tightly braided and She too held a book in her hands. Her purple nails were chipping but other than that her make-up was flawless. Sunglasses sitting on top of her head and dark lipstick that matched her equally dark skin. She was sitting down in the awkwardest position. With one knee up and pressed against the table. The two of them hadn’t bothered to speak the duration of their time in the cafe and she was the first to leave. Vince blushed upon the realization that he probably paid more attention to the woman than he should have.
The next day Vince returned to find the woman sitting in the back of the cafe reading. The place was empty and there was plenty of seats around that he could take but something made him sit across from her. He was interested in why she had decided to sit with him. Yet before he could speak she surprised him.
“You read the book that quickly?” She glanced up from her book nodding to the new one in his hands.
“Well I had already read it before,” Vince shrugged. The way she spoke made him uncomfortable. She was acting like they were more than two strangers striking up a conversation. Instead she acted like an old friend. “And you?”
“I was nearing the end of mine yesterday” She grinned. “Truth be told I see you around here a lot.” She closed her book and put it aside bring her cup of coffee a little closer to her reach. “In fact I saw you were reading a book that I really liked about two weeks ago but I never got the nerve to go up to you and talk about it”
“Oh,” Vince’s face grew hot, how on earth did he not notice her before. You will never notice people if you have your nose in a book all the time, Maggie’s warning played in Vince’s head before the young woman’s smile brought him back to reality. “My name is Vince and yours?”
“Leah, care to chat?”
“Uh-sure” Vince put his bag to the side.
Authors note: This was an old piece that I wrote as a writing competition piece surrounding the prompt “two bookworms in love,” Personally romance isn’t my favorite thing to write but I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. This isn’t my favorite piece but I think it is important to learn the balance between angst and fluff and this is by far one of the most fluffy pieces that I have ever made. I hope you enjoyed this piece and if you have any advice or questions feel free to leave a comment.
