Before we begin let’s start at the beginning. The beginning of everything.
It was august, a cold and dreary day nothing moved outside the one bedroom home I shared with my mom and older sister. Just us girls. Mom was at work and Bethany or Beth as she preferred to be called was out seeing her no good boyfriend. So I was at home alone, it’s nothing new I remember being by myself a lot. But I was always with Beth who was only 2 years older. That was until she grew boobs and decided I wasn’t cool enough to hang out with her or her friends. So now it was just me and my cat, Charlotte, who followed me home one day after school and never left.
I was sitting on the back porch watching the sunset, Charlotte in my lap purring like a motor engine. That’s when I saw it. A beam of light shot out of the sky and straight down the railroad track that ran through the small town. It was a little ways away from my house. And like any other 19 year old who saw anything strange I didn’t bother to look, I instead went inside with Charlotte and made dinner.
It was the talk of the town the next day. The cool kids to which my sister belonged to wanted to go see what disaster the beam could have caused. Because while it was on the news not a lot of pictures or videos was taken. Something about it being confidential. I on the other hand didn’t bother to go look, it would be a waste of time. Or it could end like all the movies I’ve watched about aliens crashing a ship to earth and someone finds it .There’s love, and one wants to leave instead of the other but somehow they find a way to stay together and everyone lives happily ever after. Like who would want to live on this earth?!
Besides, I knew it wasn’t that. I knew what that beam of light meant, and I didn’t want to have anything to do with it. Then again it’s not like I could do anything about it even if I wanted to.
So I opted out of going with my sister and stayed home with Charlotte. I was in the exact same spot I was sitting in with Charlotte in my lap watching the sunset in the exact way I’ve been doing for the past few years since I began to stay at home alone.
“What are you doing.” The voice said making my face pull into a small smile.
“Watching the sunset, what does it look like I’m doing.” I responded turning my head to take in the sight before me, he was a 6ft tall with skin so black it looked deep blue. I imagined I’d look just like him if I took my true form. He has white cropped hair, and his white irises, no pupils stared back at me. His lips a thin line of disapproval.
“You were supposed to meet me at the agreed spot.”
“You sure know how to make an entrance, how are you Idris.” Idris grunted taking the empty spot beside me. Charlotte who was asleep woke up, stretched, stared at Idris then proceeded to walk across my lap to his.
“Life has been…interesting” he said stroking Charlotte’s fur. I feel at this point I should explain what is going on here just in case you haven’t caught on. It’s quite typical really. I, like Idris is an alien sent to earth when I was a baby because my world was at war and to keep safe I was sent here. But Idris my guardian kept in touch with me through a chip that could connect through galaxies and what not. He was 10 when he was assigned to me. Don’t ask.
Anyway, so I knew who I was almost as soon as I could comprehend things, of course it didn’t help that at around 4 or 5 years old I was dumb enough to tell my mom who took me to a psychiatrist. Needless to say I never said anything after that.
So I knew that he would be coming to take me back once things cooled down to take my place as ruler and heir. Problem was I didn’t want to. Life on earth wasn’t glamorous but it was mine, and I loved the lazy afternoons where I could sit out on the porch and talk to Idris, telepathically of course, I guess I could still do that. I furrowed my brow.
“Would the chip be removed?” I asked.
“If you wished it”. I chewed my bottom lip. I think I’ll leave it be.
“You don’t want to go back?” Idris stated.
“No” I answered honestly with a sigh he leaned back against the swing.
“Can’t say I blame you, I told you a lot about our world but it’ll be different once you get there. But that’s not why you don’t want to go is it?
“No, I’d rather just stay here and do nothing just like I’m doing.” He raised a white brow at me.
“You do realize you’ll have to eventually get a job here right?”
“Well yes, but I won’t be fighting upcoming wars and thinking about an entire nation. It would just be me.” Idris and I fell silent for a while.
“But I also know, not going back will put them in jeopardy. “ Them being the people I’m meant to rule. The other reason I didn’t what to go back was because being Queen meant I’d be the life these people needed. And I meant that in the literal sense of the word. Not anyone can be Queen, a queen is born with an endless amount of life force that provides the source for the planet and it’s people to survive. How she distributes this force is doing a specific ritual every month that spreads this force through a large crystal for the planet which in turn gives source to smaller crystals embedded in every Uranian’s chest. And this made her a target because she was literally a walking, talking charger for planets. But once a Queen dies or is gone for long periods of time the planet starts to die and eventually the people. And that was a tall order I wasn’t sure I wanted but I didn’t have a choice did I?
“This sucks” I said spotting my sister and her friends peak over the horizon. Idris smiled.
“Thinking like a Queen already.” He said. With a slap on his arm I got up.
“I’m going to get my stuff” I already had it backed and ready to go. I just wanted to watch my last sunset on earth.
I paused at the kitchen my backpack on my back and a suitcase with me. I stared at the empty house with a smile. I took a few memorandums with me. Mom’s favorite picture of us, the three of us smiling at the camera at some amusement park. I was 10 years old then and it was the first and last time we had any kind of outing. I also took Beth’s favorite Jacket, she wouldn’t miss it, literally, as soon as I’m gone every memory of me in this house and town will be wiped clean.
Idris walked in holding Charlotte as if to ask where to put her.
“She’s coming with me.” I said walking towards the front door as I hear Beth on the back porch with Idris following close behind me.
