###This Is Why I Will Never Play Hide and Seek at Night again

It was the last day of summer break, and the air was thick with the fading heat of August. In a quiet suburban neighborhood, a group of kids gathered at the park, their laughter echoing off the playground equipment as the sun dipped below the horizon. The vibrant hues of orange and pink painted the sky, signaling the approach of night. Among them was Anna, an adventurous twelve-year-old with a wild imagination and a knack for finding trouble.

“Let’s play hide and seek!” shouted Jake, the unofficial leader of their ragtag group. “But this time, let’s make it really fun. We’ll play at night!”

The idea thrilled Anna and her friends, even as a chill ran down her spine. She had heard stories about the woods that bordered their neighborhood, tales of strange noises and shadows that seemed to move on their own. Still, the thrill of the game outweighed her apprehensions.

As darkness enveloped the park, the kids gathered near the old oak tree, its gnarled branches reaching out like skeletal fingers against the twilight. They decided on the rules: the seeker would count to fifty while the rest scattered to find hiding spots.

“I’ll seek first!” Jake volunteered, clapping his hands together. He started counting, his voice echoing in the stillness.

The others rushed off into the night, giggling and whispering as they searched for the best hiding places. Anna slipped into the shadows of the dense woods, her heart racing with excitement. She crouched behind a thick bush, straining to hear Jake's countdown.

“Forty-seven, forty-eight…” His voice faded into the distance. Anna held her breath, the rustling leaves and distant chirps of crickets creating an eerie atmosphere. Suddenly, she felt a strange sensation, as if someone was watching her. She shook it off as nerves and focused on the game.

“Fifty! Ready or not, here I come!” Jake shouted, breaking the silence.

Anna peered out from her hiding spot, ready to see her friends being discovered one by one. But as she watched, an unsettling feeling crept over her. The woods seemed too quiet, too still. She couldn’t see her friends, and an unsettling weight settled in her chest.

After a few minutes of tension, Jake called out, “Hey! Where is everyone?” His voice was slightly panicked.

Anna decided it was time to find her friends. She stepped cautiously from behind the bush, peering into the darkness. “Guys?” she called, her voice wavering.

No answer.

Unease washed over her as she ventured deeper into the woods, branches snagging at her clothes. The shadows twisted, and the trees loomed ominously above her. She shouted for her friends again, but only silence greeted her.

Suddenly, she heard a low rustling nearby. Her heart raced, and she froze. “Is that you, Jake?” she whispered, hoping for a response. But the only sound was the whisper of leaves in the wind.

Then, out of the corner of her eye, she spotted movement—a flash of white darting between the trees. Curiosity piqued, Anna followed it, her heart pounding in her chest. She thought it might be one of her friends, but as she pursued the flicker, she realized it was too quick, too erratic.

The white figure vanished into the thick underbrush, and Anna skidded to a halt. “Guys? Is that you?” she called again, her voice barely above a whisper.

But the woods remained silent. She turned to head back to the park when she noticed something glimmering on the ground. It was a small, ornate key, its surface cold and metallic in the dim light. She picked it up, feeling an inexplicable pull to it. The moment she slipped it into her pocket, a chill ran down her spine.

“Anna!” Jake’s voice broke through the stillness, sounding desperate and far away. Relief washed over her, and she ran toward the sound.

“Jake!” she called back, her voice echoing through the trees.

But as she drew closer, her excitement faded into dread. Jake wasn’t alone. The other kids had gathered, their faces pale and eyes wide with fear.

“What happened?” Anna asked, breathless.

“It’s… it’s weird,” Jake stammered, glancing around nervously. “When I found Eric, he was just standing there, staring into the trees, and then he just ran off. We couldn’t find him!”

“What do you mean he ran off?” Anna felt a knot tighten in her stomach.

“We all went to look for him, and it’s like the woods swallowed him whole. It’s like… it’s like something took him!” Sarah, one of the other kids, added, her voice shaking.

Panic set in as they realized that one of their friends was missing. They had to find Eric before something happened to him. As a group, they moved deeper into the woods, calling out for him, but the only responses were the sounds of the night.

Just then, Anna spotted something up ahead—a flicker of white in the darkness. “Over there!” she shouted, pointing. The group moved cautiously toward it, but as they got closer, it disappeared.

“Did you see that?” Jake whispered, glancing at Anna. “It looked like a ghost or something.”

“Maybe it was Eric!” Anna said, heart pounding. But deep down, she felt a chilling unease.

“Let’s split up and look for him,” Jake suggested, though his voice lacked conviction.

“No! We should stick together,” Anna protested, but the fear in their eyes overruled her.

Reluctantly, they agreed to regroup at the old oak tree in fifteen minutes. Anna, unwilling to stay alone, grabbed Jake’s arm. “Let’s stay together,” she insisted.

The two of them wandered deeper into the woods, the shadows closing in around them. Each snap of a twig made them jump, every rustle of leaves amplified their fears. Minutes felt like hours, and the air grew thick with a sense of impending doom.

Suddenly, a chilling howl pierced the night. The sound was unlike anything they had ever heard—a mix of anguish and hunger that sent shivers down their spines.

“We need to go back,” Anna urged, fear flooding her voice.

But before they could turn, a figure emerged from the shadows, stumbling toward them. It was Eric—his clothes torn, dirt smeared across his face, eyes wild with terror.

“Run!” he screamed, pushing past them. “It’s coming!”

“Coming? What do you mean?” Jake shouted, but Eric didn’t stop. They could hear the sound of something crashing through the trees behind him.

Panic ignited, and they ran after him, darting through the underbrush. But as they fled, they heard a chilling whisper, echoing in the darkness. “Play with me…”

The voice was soft yet insistent, wrapping around them like a cold mist. It made Anna’s skin crawl, and she stumbled, nearly falling. Jake caught her arm, pulling her back to her feet.

“Keep moving!” he urged, desperation in his voice.

They reached the old oak tree, where the others were waiting, wide-eyed and fearful. “What happened?” Sarah asked, looking at Eric in horror.

“I don’t know! It was… it was like something was hunting me!” Eric gasped, collapsing against the tree.

Suddenly, the whispering returned, clearer this time, growing louder as if whatever was lurking in the woods had found them. “Play with me… hide and seek…”

Anna felt a deep, paralyzing dread as the shadows around them began to twist and pulse. The darkness felt alive, breathing, and pressing in around them.

“Run!” Jake yelled, but as they turned to escape, the whispers escalated into a cacophony, and Anna felt a cold breath on the back of her neck.

“Found you,” a voice hissed, right behind her.

In that moment, she turned to face the darkness, her heart hammering in her chest. But there was nothing there—just the empty space where fear took root.

Without looking back, she ran, her friends following in a panic. They stumbled through the trees, branches clawing at them as they fought against the encroaching shadows.

Finally, they burst out of the woods and into the safety of the park, gasping for breath, their hearts racing. But as they turned to catch their breath, they realized they were not alone. The shadows loomed behind them, watching.

Anna took one last look at the woods, a shiver running through her. “This is why I will never play hide and seek at night,” she whispered, her heart heavy with the understanding that some games are better left unplayed.

As they walked home, the laughter of the kids faded into a haunting memory, the whispers of the woods following them, always reminding them of the night they dared to play with shadows.
