“So the dinner was that bad?” Myson asked, a grin curling up his face.

“It was weird,” Gadot said.

“Say less,” Myson laughed a bit.

“What we should do is keep this study thing up. We’re getting recognition in the Daily Delaware. They’re saying we’ve exceeded the expectations of other schools,” Gadot replied, shifting gears.

“That will grant us a chance to challenge the theory from within. Those crits aren’t ready for our onslaught of academic prowess,” Myson responded.

The library featured a room for them to talk that had been sectioned off from the exterior study desks. The two of them pulled out pens and a pad.

“We’re going to draft a piece of writing, a declaration to put an end to the goddamned theory,” Gadot said.

Myson had already begun writing.

“‘We the students state that we are through with complying with the dictates of the theory,” Myson read aloud.

Gadot frowned. “Is it too robotic?”

Myson rolled his eyes. “You do better, Miss ‘I’ll be eighteen before we graduate,’” Myson retorted.

“Don’t be mad that I’ll be venturing to college as a licensed driver while you still have your learner’s permit,” she answered. “Now this is how it should read.”

She jotted down her ideas lightning fast. She cleared her throat.

“At this time, the theory cannot stand. We, the students, find this anti-concept to be a blight upon the educational landscape. It hinders and hampers our abilities to perform at peak levels. Yes, we can achieve greatness with the theory in place, but that doesn’t make it a proper mode of thought. It spreads lies, distorts facts, disrupts truths, and derails proper ideas. We are fighting against this doctrine because we know enough to state that all students ought to be prepared not just for college but for life. The theory ought to have no role in that.”

Myson opened his eyes wide. “That is actually amazing. You have my sanction and full support. Now, how are we going to present this?”

“We’re going to go before the Board.”

“Who’s ‘we’?” Myson asked.

“The two of us. Against the Board.”

Myson chuckled. “Do you think that just two students can change scholastic history?”

“People have done more. It takes just one, but two will be more impactful.”

Myson stroked the stubble on his chin.

“How about we allow the teachers and our folks to be part of it, too.”

“No. This has to be delivered by students and you and I are the prime examples of what Cooney has to offer.”

“I think if we both have to do this, we’re going to begin with endorsements by the teachers, and a campaign brought up by our parents.”

“I’m intrigued,” Gadot stated.

“What we have to do is recognize we’re closer to becoming adults. We’re going to need the other adults to advocate for us. I’m in full support of your draft. It’s poignant, and cuts directly to the bone. We’re going to need to be pointed and straight-forward. You already have written a document that contains enough bite, but we’re going to need more,” Myson declared.

“Your dad and my parents, Mr. Kaur, Mrs. Harris, and Mr. Bucknell should be ready to back us on this, then. If you think we need to have them slap our shoulders, then that’s going to be excellent,” Gadot remarked.

“Are you just saying that?” Myson said.

“No, I’m serious. If we take for granted the grown-ups that aided us in this fight, we will be stranded,” Gadot replied.

“That’s why they have to be present as allies and as I deliver this speech you’ve written we will know even more,” Myson said.
