Dr. Nigel Reid scanned through the headlines on his cell phone. His eyes paused at a mention of some of his recent exploits. He never quite got used to the media attention, though it wasn’t completely accurate to say it was on him. It was more of a yes and no scenario.
Dr. Reid sometimes consulted on news pieces as an expert historian, but he was much more likely to be noticed under the guise of his alter ego; The Time Keeper. It was going on five years now of living a double life.
Sometimes it felt like only yesterday he had found the life-changing amulet. Other times, more like ages ago. Of course, in his case, it was not merely a function of relativity. The way the amulet worked caused Dr. Reid to experience time in interesting ways.
He discovered the ancient chest piece while poking around inside a small cave on the North Coast. It wasn’t an official expedition; just a little location scouting. He had hoped to find some signs of Taino presence, but he got so much more than he had bargained for.
The amulet was unique, for a Taino artifact, but nothing too extraordinary on the outside.
What was inside the carved stonework is what changed the doctor’s life. Some piece of advanced technology. Something out of this world. Dr. Reid had no explanation for its power. However, he had mastered its use through a long process of trial and error.
Mastering the use of the amulet is how the unassuming history professor had transformed into the crime-fighting Time Keeper. Wearing it allowed him to manipulate time itself; slow it down, speed it up, freeze it momentarily.
Sometimes, he even glimpsed the future. Today was one of those days.

Tells us all we need to know to kick off the beginning of the story! “Other times, more like ages ago.
