The earth, along with the great big universe came into being the day light appeared and a demigod called Sea was placed on earth to look after it.

“Be gentle and make earth beautiful” said the gods:

“I will love her as my child and nurture her” the Sea replied. Her tenderness and her love made the earth strikingly blue and beautiful.

On the other side of the universe, a demigod called Sky had rebelled against the gods and was being banished for his actions:

“You will forever tread the paths of the universe as a tramp and seek shelter for each night in the home of the other gods!” the gods cursed him.

One fine day, the Sky was passing by the earth when he saw the Sea for the first time. It didn’t take more than one glance for the Sky to fall in love with the Sea.

“Can I stay here for a night?” he asked the Sea.

The Sea in all her sweetness said, “Come, rest! You look exhausted”

They talked through the night and the Sky told her about the curse of the gods, the stories of his journey, and then, finally confessed his love for her.

“You’re so beautiful. My heavy heart grew lighter when I first saw you and I want to be with you always and forever.” The Sky said.

It was there and then that his heavy clouds finally broke down into a fit of downpour. The Sea listened without a word and when the Sky finished, she looked and him and smiled; the Sky knew why.

Their love blossomed and the bond that they shared was beyond anything the universe had known.

The gods were, however, not to be fooled. The Sky was a cursed demigod and there wasn’t going to be an easy way out for him. In their attempt to separate the Sky and the Sea, the gods said to the sun, “Burn seven times hotter.”

The Sun, another demigod, couldn’t help but obey the gods. As he burnt seven times hotter, one-third of the sea dried up and became land. The Sky tried his best to stay with his love and comfort her but the gods pulled him higher up the firmament until they could be together no more.

This, however, couldn’t deter the lovers. The will of the Sky and the Sea to be with each other was far much greater than just the wrath of the gods. The Sea that was once still and calm, stirred up storms to form huge waves so she could rise to the firmament to meet her lover; she never rose high enough. The Sky, helpless and bound up in the firmament, couldn’t help but look at his lover and cry on and on. His bitter tears rained down on the sea and with each teardrop, the Sea became saltier and saltier.

Years passed as the incessant rains and the mammoth waves continued. The mammoth waves shaped the continents of the earth and the rains brought life on dry land as well as the sea.

The earth that was once blue had turned blue and green now; the incessant effort of the Sea and the Sky to reach out to reach other had changed the earth for the better.

The gods had been spectators to all these happenings all along and started to feel pity for the Sky and the Sea. They, however, knew that to bring them back together meant the destruction of all the life forms on earth.

“The bond between the Sea and the Sky is too strong and there won’t be anything they cannot do if they are together.” said one of the gods.

They feared that the Sky and the Sea would turn against them for the injustice they did to their love.

Then one of the gods said.

“Let us then fill the hearts of all the creatures on earth with what the Sky and the Sea feel for each other. Maybe then they will be blinded by all the love they see.”

The gods did as planned and their plan worked superbly as the heart of the Sea and the Sky were moved by all the love they saw.

They became less reckless and life on earth multiplied in millions.

Soon. However, the Sea and the Sky came to know about the shrewd ways of the gods and in a fit of rage, grew much more reckless and heartless.

“All the creatures you have endowed with the power to love and feel will feel our rage and our wrath.” said the sky to the gods.

The Sea stirred waves as high as the mountains and the Sky rained ceaselessly for 40 days and 40 nights with his clouds shunning out all the light on earth.

Their desperation paid off as the Sea finally rose high enough to be with her lover. The first few days passed like the first time they met; they clung to each other, unwilling to let go.

Then as days passed it sank to them how terribly they had destroyed almost all life on earth and how they had been so blind and selfish.

The very next day, the Sky cleared up his clouds and said to the sun.

“The earth needs your light and your warmth, shine on it.”

The gods had been helpless all along as the enraged hearts of the two demigods had been too powerful for them to put out. They put out a proposition to the Sky and the Sea saying

“For all the wrongs we’ve done, give us the chance to make it right.”

Thus, they met and they made a covenant.

The Covenant was such that the Sea and the Sky would nurture life on earth and that they would never destroy life again.

“We will never cause so much pain and misery to the world again.” the Sky said.

“The earth has always been my child, now it will be our child.” said the Sea.

The gods on the other hand promised the Sky and the Sea an eternity in each sunset.

“Every day, when the sun sets into the Sea, the two of you will meet for a moment of eternity.”

And thus slowly, the sun dried up the Sea and the earth turned green again.

The Sky and the Sea both knew that being apart was never going to be enough to test their love. The love they had for each other was far too strong for it to be put off by them being apart. Thus, they made the ultimate sacrifice and have been separated forever since that day.

The only consolation they had for their bitter separation was they would reunite for a fraction of a second in each sunset; this reunification signified by the flash of green light that appears at the distant horizon during each sunset.

Why green? For all the life that could live because of their sacrifice.
