The Sandman-Digital Redux
A Short Story for the Legends Rewritten Challenge
To sleep, perchance to dream--of him. William Shakespeare and Michelle Liew.

Investigative Reporter Lena Grant's eyes popped wide open, her breath ragged. She had been plunging into a sea of dark water, unable to scream, her lungs burning for air. She fought valiantly against the cloying pull, but her efforts were powerless against the waves--they kept crashing over her again and again, dragging her deeper into their dark depths. Her hands clawed for the surface, but water swallowed them whole.
Then--nothing. Silence. Empty. Endless--until she woke.

Sleep. A necessity that had become a luxury in an interconnected world. Digital bigwigs had designed technology to make each waking moment productive, leading people to sacrifice sleep for work, entertainment or social media use.
That was the case until Jasper Ryne, DreamTech Solution's creator, revolutionized how society approached sleep. He offered the ultimate sleep experience : a high-tech sleep device that promised to eliminate restless nights or disruptive tossing and turning. The catchy slogan he devised was: "Sleep deeper than a newborn."
But Jasper, innovative technopreneur that he was, became too caught up with his invention. His obsession was born from his struggles with insomnia, which he believed he could only control with total dominion over sleep. To him, it was no longer a natural process - it was a system that was to be perfected, packaged and sold. Little did he know that his helpful concoction harboured a dark secret- it was the open door to a darker world.

Jasper's company flourished, with the devices he made flying off the shelves. He had a host of loyal followers who trusted in DreamTech's promise of perfect rest - their devotion was obsessive, almost cult-like.
And a subtle side effect of the use of these devices manifested. As more people used the sleep pods, they started to report strange, vivid dreams- nightmares - that felt too real to be mere figments of over-active imaginations.
Investigative journalist Lena Grant, a long-time skeptic of the sleep-tech industry, took the iniative to dig deeper into the phenomenon. She had been a user of the company's sleep pods for weeks, unable to resist their lure. But the more she used the device, the more her dreams turned into horrific visions- of being trapped in dark voids, of sinking in endless oceans, and drowning in her own mind. Her waking hours blurred with her dreams until she couldn't tell where they ended and her reality began.
Determined to uncover the truth, she dug into DreamTech's operations. What she unveiled sent her reeling in shock - nearly 80% of users had complained of violent nightmares, a fact the company tried desperately to cover. The truth was no longer something to seek-it pursued her.
Her dogged interviews with users began, and their result was no suprise- their nightmares were harrowing. Sleep no longer belonged to the dreamer; instead, it was a shared space, with DreamTech's share being larger.
Her interactions with former employees were equally revealing - of data harvesting and ethical misses. The deeper she dug, the closer she got to Jasper himself, the boss who had all that time remained elusive, hidden behide the public facade of a benevolent tech mogul.

The intrepid reporter's investigation culminated in DreamTech's headquarters, a towering building that pulsed eerily with artificial light. It was as if the company, and its founder never slept.
Lena found herself in Jasper's sleek, minimalist office---the space seemed to reflect the chilling precision of his avant garde, yet troubling technology.
"Do you know what you've created?!" Lena's trembling voice was a mix of fury and fear.
Jasper smiled, his expression bearing no trace of warmth. "I merely created what the world needed. Sleep, perfect and pure. No distractions, no nightmares." He walked to a glass window and peered with yellowed, narrow eyes on the city below. "I've perfected what humanity has always sought - escape. It's the kind of escape where you don't have to run from your own mind."
"You see, we collect dreams, Lena. All of them. Nightmares as well. They're the mind's currency. You've no idea what people will pay to rid themselves of their darkest thoughts."'
An ominous chill ran down Lena's spine. "But you're stealing their memories--their essence. Their very souls!"
"They're not using them," Jasper's tone was quiet and final. "But I have great use for them. You see, in each dream lies the key to perfect conciousness. I've merely unlocked it. My devices don't just help people sleep- I harvest them to fuel my immortality."
He faced Lena squarely. "What if you could control the human mind's darkest fears? Would you do it? Would you sell it?" He paused, and pointed an accusing finger at her. "You're no different from me-I'm sure you would!"
In that moment, Lena understood--the Sandman, a figure as old as the legend itself, had returned - not as a gentle entity bringing needed slumber, but as Jasper Ryne - the modern tech mogul who fed on the deepest, most personal realms of the human mind.

The confrontation left Lena shaken, but resolute. She left the DreamTech building with evidence in hand, knowing that the fight had just begun.
As the world slept under Jasper Ryne's unyielding influence, Lena vowed to bare the ugly truth about his empire and its dealings. In time, the world, with her help, would wake up to the nightmare quietly unfolding in their minds.
The truth was buried in dreams, a place where no one had thought to look. Dreams people were too afraid to confront. But she, Lena, had found them. She had seen the face of the elusive Sandman--in the flesh--and she wouldn't rest until she unveiled him.
****************************************************************
In the Digital Sandman's world, nothing was private--not even dreams. People had become the very products of their need for rest. And while they slept, their dreams- their very wishes and fears--were stolen by Jasper Ryne. For as long as he continued developing his digital devices, the Sandman would remain, tucked away, a haunting shadow of the modern age.
And somewhere in the deepest recesses of his mind, those very dreams had fed his insatiable hunger, making for certain that he would never need to sleep--again.
