The Red Sun

Something was coming

By Nicole FergusonPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

There weren't always dragons in the Valley. Our dearly beloved winged friends.

Is this good or bad one might ask. It depends on who shares the tale. There was a long period of chilling fear and chaos in our world before the prophecy unfurled that brought to life our first dragons whose birth eclipsed the burning of the red sun.

The prophecy of the red Sun speaks of how the wind from the wings of dragons will tame the fire of the red sun. The daughter of the Sea will make a way for the coming of dragons from the death of the Valley. Upon the dying embers of the red sun, will the realms of Air, Sea, Mountains, and Valley become one.

King Thanador was granted eternal dominion over Glamlore Valley. He was fair and true, a leader amongst men. His gentle spirit admired and emulated by many; envied though by some. Yet, as it turned out, this gentility would lead to his undoing. Upon the untimely death of his wife Bethaniah, he took the hand of a young, ethereal beauty, Walasilay. She was from the Sea. Although strikingly beautiful to the eye, her heart beat only to bring forth the evils of the ancient storied dark magic. The young sorceress would one day prevail. As she saw it, the dark magic was not evil but existed to bring forth dragons.

Dragons were believed to be bearers and guardians of peace. There purpose was to unite the worlds of the Air, Sea, Mountains, and Valley. Many moons had passed since the inhibit ants of Air, Sea, Mountains, and Valley co existed without tension and war. The death of Bethaniah caused many Valley dwellers to lose faith in King Thanador. Why was no one questioning her untimely death? For she was in good health. She was just and kind. How did it come to pass?

The uprisings from Xandor, an Air region, has led to civil battles. Xandorans at odds over the loss of their Bethaniah in a foreign land. The pact between the Valley and Air now broken. Child Queen Matas, younger sister of Bethaniah, had no power or knowledge to calm the unrest. King Thanador not mourning his loss but quickly taking a new wife? How strange? A man of gentle disposition, just, and noble not mourning the loss of his beloved? A new wife from the Sea, from Sellenis? Sellenis was home to merfolk and other sea creatures who despised and had no trust for those of the Valley nor Air. How did this come to pass?

The ancients spoke of the world of Meklom, where treacherous men were enslaved and magic was wielded by the Elves. Meklom was in the Mountains. Magic there was used for good. Elves were superior in beauty and skilled in all that was magical, yet they had no power that could stand against the dark magic. The magic that could bring all who lived to their knees. The magic that had found it’s way back on the tongues of those lingering in the shadows. Back from the farthest corners of each realm. Back from the darkest depths of the Sea. How did this come to pass?

The whispers on the wind chimed with surprise and undertones of delight. Ever so slight bewilderment also. Now? When most dwellers of the regions are at an impasse? Something was coming. Calon, the fairy Queen of the Forest of Hemlan, heard the chatter in the forest. Chatter about dragons. Dragons?

Was it time for the prophecy to unveil its truths… to manifest? She would visit with the Elders who watched over the Wands of Sallandorn to glimpse at what might be coming…
