The Queen’s Gambit

How a Draw in Chess Changed the Fate of Two Kingdoms

By Jymo FiestaPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

Elizabeth was nervous as she entered the palace of Versailles. She had been invited by King Louis XIV of France to play a game of chess with him. She was not sure why he had chosen her, a young English lady, out of all the other guests at his court. She had heard rumors that he was bored with his usual opponents and wanted to challenge someone new. She had also heard that he was a master of the game and rarely lost.

She had learned chess from her father, who was a diplomat and a scholar. He had taught her the rules and the strategies, as well as the history and the culture of the game. He had told her that chess was a noble art, a way of expressing one’s intelligence and creativity. He had also told her that chess was a dangerous game, a way of testing one’s courage and cunning. He had warned her that chess could be used as a weapon, a way of manipulating one’s enemies and allies.

She wondered if that was what the king had in mind. She wondered if he had some hidden motive for inviting her to play with him. She wondered if he had some secret plan for her.

She followed the servant who led her to the king’s private chamber. She saw him sitting at a table with a chessboard and pieces in front of him. He looked up and smiled when he saw her.

“Ah, Mademoiselle Elizabeth, welcome to my humble abode. I am delighted that you have accepted my invitation.”

He rose from his seat and bowed to her. He was tall and handsome, with long curly hair and a sun-kissed complexion. He wore a lavish outfit of blue velvet and gold lace, adorned with jewels and medals. He radiated charisma and authority.

She curtsied to him and returned his smile. She was petite and pretty, with blond hair and blue eyes. She wore a simple dress of white silk and lace, with no ornaments or accessories. She radiated grace and innocence.

“Your Majesty, thank you for your kind words. I am honored by your attention.”

He gestured to the seat opposite him.

“Please, sit down. Let us begin our game.”

He sat down again and moved one of his pawns forward.

She sat down and looked at the board. She saw that he had chosen the French opening, a common and aggressive move. She decided to counter it with the Sicilian defense, a rare and risky move.

She moved one of her pawns forward.

He raised his eyebrows in surprise.

“Interesting choice, Mademoiselle. You are not afraid to take risks, are you?”

She shook her head.

“No, Your Majesty. I believe that fortune favors the bold.”

He nodded.

“Indeed, it does. But it also favors the wise.”

He moved one of his knights forward.

She moved one of her bishops forward.

They continued to play, moving their pieces with skill and speed. They exchanged glances and smiles, as well as compliments and taunts. They seemed to enjoy each other’s company, as well as each other’s challenge.

They played for an hour, until they reached a critical position on the board. He had sacrificed one of his rooks to capture one of her knights, leaving his king exposed. She had sacrificed one of her bishops to capture one of his pawns, leaving her queen exposed.

They both had only one move left to make.

He looked at her with admiration.

“You have played very well, Mademoiselle. You have surprised me more than once.”

She looked at him with respect.

“Thank you, Your Majesty. You have played very well too. You have impressed me more than once.”

He smiled.

“Thank you, Mademoiselle. But now we must end this game.”

He moved his queen forward.

She moved her queen forward.

They both said at the same time:

“Checkmate.”

They both stared at the board in disbelief.

They both realized that they had made the same move.

They both realized that they had reached a draw.

They both realized that they had reached a stalemate.

They both realized that they had reached an impasse.

They both realized that they had reached an equilibrium.

They both realized that they had reached a balance.

They both looked at each other in wonder.

They both felt something stir in their hearts.

They both felt something change in their minds.

They both felt something shift in their souls.

They both felt something new in their lives.

They both felt something old in their worlds.

They both felt something different in their futures.

They both felt something similar in their destinies.

They both felt something…
